©Molly Looby No way. I knew I was dying. I knew I was dying fast, but this hit me like a speeding bullet. How long did I have left, years, months, weeks? Days...?

For Ali-Rose life is just a fading moment. Fighting from her inevitable death is the only thing she can do to save her family from the grief that is sure to engulf them. But something on the horizon is about to change her life...

(This is a Twilight fanfic set twelve years after the end of 'Breaking Dawn', but not from Bella's POV, from the POV of Ali-Rose - all will be revealed if you care to read on.)

(Author's Note: Before you read Mattie, please can I just point out that it was written when I was fourteen-fifteen years old, and it was also the first thing I ever wrote and finished, for my own benefit and that of a close friend. I know it has its flaws and I'm okay with that because this story made me grow as an author more than I could've imagined. I truly hope you enjoy it.)

I COULD SEE EVERYTHING. IT WAS AMAZING. I’D never noticed the colour of my ceiling before. It was pale white with dust motes clinging on. The moonlight shone through the window, giving the room an eerie glow. In the same moment that I had decided to sit up, I was sitting up. It was instant, no thinking needed. I took in the world around me. I gasped as I looked at my family. Air was pulled into my lungs. It felt strange without pain, without relief. I tasted so many sweet flavours in the air. I couldn’t put names to them; my human nose had not known fragrances like these. I felt both Renesmee and Jacob’s heat from where I sat. Neither smelt like food, Jacob especially didn’t, but the heat made my throat burn dryly. Renesmee smiled at me and I gasped again. She was so beautiful. Breathtaking really. The deep look in her eyes reminded me of myself, always giving things away with a look. Jacob’s smile mirrored Renesmee’s and looked very familiar. That was my smile. All these things I had never noticed before. I was most definitely their daughter. Bella looked wary. She had been here twelve years ago almost exactly. Bella’s extraordinary beauty echoed Renesmee’s. Looking at Bella was like looking into a mirror. She was just an older version of me. Her hair, the shape of the eyes, her build, everything. Edward chuckled softly. Edward stood with Bella, slightly in front of her. I looked closely at how he held himself. How he stood. It was the way I stood. At that second I realised. I had always been a Cullen. My concentration had only picked up these things in my peripheral vision. My complete being was focused on Tyler. It was like I had never seen him before. I tried to think of suitable words to describe him, but no such words had been invented. I hadn’t noticed that he was holding my hand until he squeezed it. He was the exact same temperature as my skin. I smiled at him and he smiled back. I jumped off my bed so that I could stare into his eyes, take them in. I gazed into his ancient eyes as he gazed into mine, newborn and untouched. Almost an entire second had passed since I had first opened my eyes. It was so overwhelming, seeing everything for the first time all at once. I was so strong and yet I felt weak, I felt lost. Tyler put his arms around my waist.

“Mattie?” He asked in a gentle tone. I was distracted by the complete glory that was his voice. It was smooth and poetic. His charming English accent stunned me. “It’s okay, I know the change is overpowering, but you’re okay.” I felt a rush of complete desire and had to control myself. I took a deep breath, marvelling at the flavours, and said;

“I love you.” My voice rang with a new clarity. It startled me. Tyler’s smile, the same breathtaking smile, was astounding.

“And I love you.” I threw my arms around him. It was as though there was no movement. Tyler staggered back a few steps and amazingly, almost lost his balance. I took a step back giggling at his surprised face.

“I’m sorry.” The texture of my voice stunned me once again. Carlisle stepped through the Jasper-Emmett barrier. His face seemed to light up the room.

“How do you feel Mattie?”

“Strange.” I replied instantly. “Confused, disoriented, but perfect.” I listened to my voice layer the word perfect with meaning, because I really was perfect, astoundingly so.

“That is to be expected. What do you remember about your transformation? Edward said you were unconscious for most of it.”

“Yes. I only had to endure the agony for roughly eight hours, but when I woke I could remember why I was in agony, and that made all the difference.” I shuddered at the memory of the fire. I could remember it all too clearly. I saw Edward shudder too.

“Interesting.” Carlisle mused. “It must have been something to do with your blood. After all, you were never human.”

I wasn’t really concentrating on Carlisle’s words, because as I had moved my head round I had found my reflection in the mirror. The small vampire was undeniably beautiful, a tiny Bella. Her skin was glowing white in the light of the moon. I had to remind myself that this was me. My hair looked darker than usual next to my pale face. I could easily pick out the copper-coloured strands that contrasted wonderfully with the rest of my hair. The eyes shocked me. They were a vivid crimson, fright and horror glowed from them. I took a step back, growling softly. Tyler gently squeezed my hand. I calmed slowly, it took every ounce of my concentration.

“Well done Mattie.” Jasper remarked.

“What did you expect from our miniature Bella?” Emmett joked. I stopped to marvel at Esme’s smile, Rosalie’s beauty and Emmett’s size. Alice skipped in front of Jasper. I marvelled at her too, her and Jasper. She was grinning at me.

“What?” I asked.

“I can see you.” She seemed to be amazed by this fact.

“It’s about time!” I was distracted again as I listened to her ringing laugh. “Now go on, get going.” I was going to have to get used to Alice knowing what I was doing before I did.

“Where am I going?”

“Tyler’s taking you hunting.”

The mention of hunting had my throat burning, a reminder of my painful transformation. Edward sucked in a breath as he felt the pain that I did. I’d have to be more careful about my thoughts. I took a deep breath and turned to Tyler.

“Let’s go!”

He took my hand and led me out of the house. I raced him into the forest, using my strength to my advantage. This was my beginning. My true beginning. I could love Tyler forever, and forever is how long we had.
