©Molly Looby No way. I knew I was dying. I knew I was dying fast, but this hit me like a speeding bullet. How long did I have left, years, months, weeks? Days...?

For Ali-Rose life is just a fading moment. Fighting from her inevitable death is the only thing she can do to save her family from the grief that is sure to engulf them. But something on the horizon is about to change her life...

(This is a Twilight fanfic set twelve years after the end of 'Breaking Dawn', but not from Bella's POV, from the POV of Ali-Rose - all will be revealed if you care to read on.)

(Author's Note: Before you read Mattie, please can I just point out that it was written when I was fourteen-fifteen years old, and it was also the first thing I ever wrote and finished, for my own benefit and that of a close friend. I know it has its flaws and I'm okay with that because this story made me grow as an author more than I could've imagined. I truly hope you enjoy it.)

I AWOKE WITH A SIGH. I BLINKED OPEN MY EYES. I HAD a werewolf on one side and a vampire on the other. Surprisingly, Carlisle was nowhere to be seen. Edward answered my thought.

“Once it gets to about four am you don’t need him anymore.”

I nodded. Jacob was stretched out on the edge of my bed, giving me as much space as possible. Edward however, didn’t look as though he had moved since I had fallen asleep in his lap. His arms were still around me keeping me cool. Jacob didn’t seem to mind. It was better that I was cool; the sensation was foreign to me. I felt my brain trying to tell me something. As soon as I’d sensed this, recollection flooded through my brain. It touched every nerve in my body, flowed right though to the tips of my toes. Tyler. Edward’s eyes were on me, a meaningful look in his expression.

“Where’s Tyler?” I asked in a whisper.

“He’s out hunting in the forest with Emmett.” Edward replied, still giving me that significant stare.

“What’s he like?” I tried to make my voice innocent. I wasn’t quite sure why, but Edward saw straight through my facade. He smiled at me, smug, but he answered anyway.

“He’s a nice person, kind and sincere. He would never hurt anybody, unless he had a very good reason.”

“Can I meet him today?” I was unable to conceal my enthusiasm.

Edward seemed undecided. I began arguing with him in my head.

There can be a huge space in between us, Emmett in the middle.

“I don’t think he’d ever hurt you on purpose, I’ve seen enough of his mind to know that that will never happen.”

Then what’s the problem?

“What if he’s unable to resist?”

I spoke my words now. I hoped it would help to convince him.

“You’ll be there reading his mind. Jasper will be there reading his mood. Emmett and Jacob will be there doing what they do best. I can’t smell that good to you anyway, come on, I’m half werewolf. I’ll be fine.”

I looked into his familiar eyes, understanding clicked into place, but in his eyes or mine, I didn’t know.

I was sitting in between Bella and Rosalie on the largest sofa. Emmett and Jacob were standing either side of it. Alice was on the smaller sofa with Renesmee, both ready for the slightest sign of trouble. Alice’s eyes were closed, but she wouldn’t be able to see anything. Esme was in the arm chair, the most relaxed out of us all. Edward and Carlisle were outside with Tyler, they were going to stand on either side of him. I was getting more and more anxious by the second. Jasper was calming me down for now, but in a minute he’d only be focused on Tyler. Yet again I felt enormously sorry for Tyler. I couldn’t imagine how he was feeling. My attention was stolen from me as soon as Tyler entered the room. He was tall for his age of sixteen. He was only just shorter than Edward. He was slim, but didn’t lack the muscles that should be visible on a vampire. Short cropped chocolate coloured hair was swept back from the speed that they would have been running. His hair was un-tidy, but didn’t lack style. Carlisle, Tyler and Edward were standing in front of the huge T.V. screen. Carlisle and Edward were a step forward, or was Tyler a step backward?

“Tyler . . .” Carlisle broke the silence that had been both seconds and hours long. “This is Mattie.”

I forced a smile at him and held my hand up in a waving gesture. His return beam made my face fall in to a more relaxed position. He had taken my breath away. I stared deeply into his eyes, which even from a distance were an odd colour. They were an orange-y shade of red, a colour that I had no name for.

“Hello. I’m Tyler, pleased to meet you.” His voice was clear and crisp, like a white sheet. It was as smooth as butter. I wanted to melt. I felt my cheeks go hot and everyone stiffened.

“Hello,” I said shyly. “I’m Mattie, pleased to meet you too.” His smile grew. I had to know more about him. “So . . . where do you come from Tyler?” I struggled to think of a question, anything that would get him to speak.

“I lived in London as a human, but as a vampire I’ve travelled throughout Britain.”

“Have you ever left the United Kingdom?”

He shook his head. “No. I don’t really have a lot of interest in travelling.”

“Oh.” I didn’t know how to continue the conversation.

“I must confess that I’m very interested in you Mattie,” My heartbeat sped up. I sighed automatically. My name sounded even more perfect when he said it. “What are you most like?” My chest ached as I took a deep breath.

“I think that I’m most like a human. I used to be like a vampire, but it’s fading slowly. I go to school with humans, and I’ve noticed myself becoming like them. I’m only slightly faster and stronger than them. I hate it.” I had to compose myself before continuing. “My body temperature is like Jake’s, it’s very high and my heart beats as fast as his. But they are the only things that are werewolf about me.”

“So you’re very human?”

“Well yes, but I drink blood. Human food is disgusting, but I need it to survive.” I continued chatting to Tyler. We spoke as though the situation wasn’t at all dangerous and as though we’d known each other for a long time. Occasionally I would lose my train of thought as I stared into his faultless face or his extraordinary eyes. He listened keenly to my stories and added his own comments. When he was speaking he seemed to be both concentrating on the words and on me at the same time. I listened to his words closely, following his stories with great interest. Edward and Carlisle had broken rank after about fifteen minutes, Emmett after about twenty, and Jacob and Jasper after half an hour. The atmosphere was friendly, everyone joining in with the conversation now. When it got dark, Rosalie and Emmett went home. Carlisle and Esme had also disappeared. I had been talking to Tyler for a very long time, but I had no intention of stopping. I already trusted him fully. Trust was something that I gave to everyone, you didn’t have to earn it, but if you lost it, it was almost impossible to rebuild. That was my way of thinking. Edward, Bella, Renesmee, and Alice, were fine around Tyler, they all seemed convinced that he wasn’t going to do anything. Jacob didn’t seem so sure, but he was warming to Tyler. I was surprised with Jasper’s behaviour. Jasper chatted with Tyler as though Tyler was as safe as Renesmee. Tyler’s pleasant nature made it impossible to dislike him. So far I couldn’t find anything that was bad about Tyler. He was very caring - worrying about me as though he’d always been part of the family. He was very understanding, he nodded as I told him about school and the problems I had. He laughed a charming laugh at my various funny human stories. Eventually, as it got later and later, Jacob and Renesmee went to bed. I was amazed that they left me with Tyler without a backward glance. I chatted with Tyler until it was very late.

“Mattie,” Bella said as soon as there was a gap in the conversation. “It’s time for bed.”

“Aw.” I moaned.

“Tyler will be here in the morning, you won’t miss anything.”

I sighed. “Okay then.” I jumped up off of the sofa and gave Tyler a smile.

“Edward? Are you going to take her?”

He nodded. “I’ll stay with her until Carlisle’s there.”

I bounced up the stairs, listening to the gentle humming of voices coming from behind me. I sighed happily as I got into bed. Edward chuckled at me.

You,” He answered simply. “You seem to like Tyler.”

“Yes, he’s lovely.” I said smiling.

“He is. He likes you too, he finds you fascinating.”

I blushed. Edward touched my cheek and smiled.

“You’re just a very small version of Bella.”

I smiled back.

“By the way, Jasper is very happy for you to be around Tyler because he felt everything Tyler felt, and like me, he knows that he would never hurt you.”

I felt as though I knew this already. A bond had grown between me and Tyler tonight. I already saw him as a very close friend. I closed my eyes, eager for sleep. The faster I fell asleep, the faster I got to see Tyler again.
