©Molly Looby No way. I knew I was dying. I knew I was dying fast, but this hit me like a speeding bullet. How long did I have left, years, months, weeks? Days...?

For Ali-Rose life is just a fading moment. Fighting from her inevitable death is the only thing she can do to save her family from the grief that is sure to engulf them. But something on the horizon is about to change her life...

(This is a Twilight fanfic set twelve years after the end of 'Breaking Dawn', but not from Bella's POV, from the POV of Ali-Rose - all will be revealed if you care to read on.)

(Author's Note: Before you read Mattie, please can I just point out that it was written when I was fourteen-fifteen years old, and it was also the first thing I ever wrote and finished, for my own benefit and that of a close friend. I know it has its flaws and I'm okay with that because this story made me grow as an author more than I could've imagined. I truly hope you enjoy it.)

I WAS RUNNING. RUNNING AWAY FROM MY LIFE. Running away from my problems. Just running. All I could hear was the pounding of my feet, matching the pounding of my heart. The forest was black and white – colour had gone, vanished. I ran. I needed to get away. I swerved around a corner and appeared in a clearing. It wasn’t a clearing that I recognised. I stood still in the middle of it. My muscles locked into place. A figure appeared on the outskirts, bright in my black and white world. It was a vampire. My eyes couldn’t pick out any details, just the slender figure and masculine posture. He glided towards me. As he got closer I relaxed more and more. My body reacted strangely, my stance relaxed. I no longer wanted to run. When he was just a metre away from me, I collapsed. He was standing over me, concerned. I tried to study his face, but it was a blur. My eyes were weak. He said something to me, but my ears heard nothing. I tried to speak, but no sound came out. He was close to my face now, whispering. I would have given anything to hear his words. He stared deeply into my eyes. I studied his eyes too, and I found that I couldn’t look away. He broke the stare before I was ready to be blinded again. He leaned even closer and kissed me softly. A million words were in that kiss. A million thoughts, feelings, wishes. He whispered just one last time. And then his teeth were at my neck . . .

I woke with a jump. I sat bolt upright, staring at the wall in front of me.

“Ali-Rose?” Carlisle appeared at my side.

“Just a dream.” I said distantly. “Just a dream.” Carlisle looked relieved, but I didn’t really see him. I was staring at the blank wall in front of me. It was just a dream. A dream. A silent tear trickled down my cheek. I didn’t wipe it off, Carlisle would see it anyway. I continued to stare at the blank wall. It was just a dream. I chanted over and over in my head. A beautiful dream. The vampire in my dream was my perfect match. The one who would love me the most, and he had been about to give me my wish. I heard some commotion downstairs. It sounded like it was Edward. I swiftly scanned back over my thoughts. I quickly noticed my mistake. Please keep quiet Edward. I pleaded with him in my head. You can talk to me about it later, just please don’t tell them. It seemed to work. Carlisle looked confused, but didn’t ask.  I continued staring at the wall. The second I was alone Edward appeared first in the door frame, and then sitting at the end of my bed.

“Ali-Rose,” He began. “You’re more like Bella than I would have thought.” He searched my eyes for something, like he had done just before fighting Emmett. I understood now that he was searching for Bella deep within my eyes. I still wasn’t sure whether he had found it. He sighed and began again.

“How can you want this,” he motioned to himself with his arms, “for yourself?”

“It would solve all of my problems. You must see that it would be better, and safer, than me staying in this human state?”

“Safer, yes, but better?”

“You can all live forever, if I was like you I could too, so yes, of course it’s better.”

“What about the thirst Ali-Rose? You’re feeling only a very weak version today, and it’s really bothering you.”

“I can learn. I’ve been practising my whole life. I don’t think I’ll be an out of control newborn.”

“Perhaps,” he allowed. “But look at Rosalie. She would give anything to become human, even now. Don’t you want a human life?”

“No.” He knew it was true. I never wanted to be human, or have a human life. The idea seemed stupid to me. “I want to be a proper Cullen.”

He laughed once without humour.

“I want to belong, I want to fit in.”

“You’re too young Ali-Rose.”

“I’m not asking for it now. When I’m old enough, ‘sixteen’,” I made quotation marks in the air. “Would be a good age, I’d still be the youngest then.”

That silenced him for a moment. “I can’t argue with that. I do understand where you’re coming from Ali-Rose, especially from the safety aspect.”

“Exactly – ‘you never know how long you have.’” I quoted.

“But you’re part werewolf!” He suddenly exclaimed. “Vampire venom may be poison to you. How are we going to test it out?”

“I have an idea.” I said my mood brightening by the minute. “And I’ve been wanting to show you this.”

He looked curious, but stayed silent. I closed my eyes, which wasn’t necessary, but I felt like I should. Is vampire venom poison to me?

No. I looked at Edward, thoroughly pleased with myself. He was staring at me in astonishment.

“How did you do that?”

“I don’t really know.” I admitted. “It just happened for the first time about a week ago. I think I’ve figured it out now. It only works with yes or no questions. It doesn’t work with the future, but it works with some aspects of the past.”

“Ask something else.” He said eagerly.

I didn’t close my eyes this time. I just focused on the blank wall. Is it possible for me to be turned into a vampire?

Yes. I shook my head slightly, refocusing on the room around me. I could be a vampire! At least I knew it was possible, that would have to do for now. “Do you think I have a gift?” I said enthusiastically.

“Yes - most definitely, there’s a way to find out.” He said smiling.

Do I have a gift?

Yes. I looked back at him a smiled.

“You need to show Carlisle.”

“I will, I want to get dressed first though. I feel scruffy today.”

“Okay, I’ll keep quiet so you can tell them. I’ll keep quiet about your wish too; you can tell them when you’re ready.”

I flung my arms around him. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. See you in a minute.” And with that he was gone.

I skipped into the bathroom and had a shower. I felt a lot better when I had finished. I looked fleetingly at my reflection. My eyes were the darkest I’d ever seen them. They were deep purple today. I loved it when my eyes were purple. It was the most interesting colour by far. I hated it when they had even the slightest hint of red in them. I got dressed as quickly as I could, brushed once through my hair and made my way downstairs.

“I need to talk to you all.” I exclaimed as I reached the bottom step. They were already sitting down as I reached the dining room table. The dining room table was huge. It could hold twelve people. I loved where everyone sat - it seemed to have so much meaning. There was a space at the head of the table waiting for me. Esme was on my left, and Carlisle was on my right. Next to Carlisle sat, Edward, Bella, Alice and Jasper. Next to Esme sat, Renesmee, Jacob, Emmett and Rosalie. The spare space was directly in front of me, I ignored it.

“I think . . .” I started, not entirely sure what to say. “That I have a gift.” A wave of curiosity crashed through them. “I can ask questions in my head, and my voice replies to me, giving me the answer. It only works with yes or no questions. It doesn’t work with the future, but it works with some aspects of the past.”

“Fascinating,” Carlisle said amazed. “When did you find out you could do this?”

“About a week ago, but I’ve only just learnt how to use it properly.”

“Fascinating,” Carlisle repeated.

“What do you mean it works with some aspects of the past?” Rosalie said.

“Well, I asked a question about the past that I knew the answer to, just to try it out, but I didn’t get an answer.”

“What did work?” Rosalie said thoroughly interested.

“Well I asked about something that happened a minute before, something that I had seen happen. I asked about that to get more information. I asked whether my friend Alison had thought I was a vampire for a minute. And I got an answer. She had, but she doesn’t believe her theory. I had to ask a few questions to get that full answer though, because I only get yes or no answers.”

They all stared in astonishment.

“Amazing,” Carlisle said.

“It doesn’t work with the future at all?” Alice asked curious.

“Nope, the future’s your area of expertise Alice, not mine.”

“Let’s test it out.” Emmett suggested enthusiastically.

“Is Charlie okay?” Bella asked before Emmett could think of anything.

Is Charlie okay?

Nothing – why? I wondered.

“Maybe you have to be more specific.” Edward suggested.

Good idea. Is Charlie, Bella’s father, okay?

Yes. “Yep, he’s okay.”

“I hope he’s not missing us too much.” It was the hardest for Bella to leave America. She had to leave Charlie behind. She and Edward were going to visit a month ago, but my heath had become worse and they didn’t want to leave me. Charlie had completely understood - he felt the same way.

“He’s got Sue.” I reminded her. “He’s fine.”

“Yeah, you’re right.” Bella said nodding her head.

“Can you ask questions about anything?” Alice asked curious again, “about the wolves, humans, us, anything?”

“I think so.” I wasn’t completely sure, I hadn’t thought of that.

“Ask about the pack.” Jacob suggested. “I was about to go and talk to them, but this is easier.”

Is Jacob’s pack okay?

Yes. “They’re fine Jake.”

“Seth won’t like it if you don’t check in Jake.” Renesmee pointed out. “They’ll think something’s happened to you if you don’t talk to them within the hour.”

Jacob groaned. “If I tell them about Ali-Rose’s power when I talk to them then I’ll only have check in with them every few days, to talk to them, instead of check on them.” Jacob seemed pleased with his conclusion.

While Jacob was talking I had asked my own question. I was careful to keep my question out of the future tense. If I was a vampire could I survive on only animal blood?

Yes. Would I find it difficult?

Nothing. I tried again. If I were to become a vampire, would I find it difficult to only live on animal blood?

Nothing – maybe it was because it was sort of in the future tense.

“Can you ask about yourself Ali-Rose?” Carlisle asked.

“Yeah,” I said, not entirely sure of the question.

“Are you in any danger at the moment?”

Am I in danger at the moment?

No. “No, I’m not.”

“Interesting,” Carlisle said again.

“Can we go hunting today Carlisle?” I asked.

“If you really need to, yes we can.”

“Can we go now?” I asked eagerly.

Edward chuckled at me.

“We can. We need someone to come with us though.”

“I’ll come.” Jacob suggested. “I need to talk to the pack before they do anything reckless.”

“Excellent. Are you ready right now Ali-Rose.”

“Yep.” I already had my shoes on ready. I was desperate to hunt.

“Let’s go then.”

Jacob signalled me to jump on to his back. He had to bend down quite low for me to reach his shoulders. When I was safely on Jacob’s back we disappeared out the back door. Renesmee was half a step behind Jacob and Carlisle was running in front. It felt like a long time since I’d felt the wind rush through my hair.
