Mattie

©Molly Looby No way. I knew I was dying. I knew I was dying fast, but this hit me like a speeding bullet. How long did I have left, years, months, weeks? Days...?
Hours...?

For Ali-Rose life is just a fading moment. Fighting from her inevitable death is the only thing she can do to save her family from the grief that is sure to engulf them. But something on the horizon is about to change her life...
Forever...

(This is a Twilight fanfic set twelve years after the end of 'Breaking Dawn', but not from Bella's POV, from the POV of Ali-Rose - all will be revealed if you care to read on.)

(Author's Note: Before you read Mattie, please can I just point out that it was written when I was fourteen-fifteen years old, and it was also the first thing I ever wrote and finished, for my own benefit and that of a close friend. I know it has its flaws and I'm okay with that because this story made me grow as an author more than I could've imagined. I truly hope you enjoy it.)

16. ADDITION

The day started off normally. Bella and Edward were on a very short hunting trip. Alice was surfing the internet with Rosalie very close by. Jasper and Emmett were playing a very complicated game which used three chess boards and various random game pieces. Carlisle was at work. Esme was learning how to make something called ‘Shepherd’s pie’, and Jacob and Renesmee played both board and card games with me. The return of Bella and Edward marked the beginning of the evening. They replaced Jacob and Renesmee in the game we were currently playing. Bella was conveniently keeping Edward out. He didn’t complain - it was the only way he could play. Jacob needed to talk to the pack, but he also wanted to run. He felt cooped up, restricted to one forest, so he and Renesmee were going to go to the biggest forest they could find. I expected them to be gone all night and probably tomorrow morning. But I was wrong. Edward had just beaten Bella and me at Cluedo - Cluedo was an impossible game to play with vampires, I’d never won it - when the phone rang. I picked it up, mechanically, not thinking that we never got phone calls.

“Hello?” I asked in a sunny voice.

“Ali-Rose?” There was something off about Renesmee’s voice. Something was wrong. She’d forgotten to use my new name. “Can I speak to Carlisle please?”

“Sure.” I handed Carlisle the phone, he was standing only metres away from me. Everyone had stopped. They all would have heard Renesmee as clearly as I had.

“Are you sure?” Carlisle asked into the phone. It was annoying. I could only here Carlisle - someone would have to explain in a minute. “Okay. Jasper?” Jasper was at Carlisle’s side in a second. “Ring Edward if you need to.” He said to Renesmee and put the phone on the receiver. Edward nodded at his father as Carlisle and Jasper flitted out the front door. I looked around. Alice had a look of discomfort contorting her small features.

“I . . . can’t see.” She whispered.

“It’s alright Alice. It’s probably because of Nessie and Jacob.” Bella went to stand beside Alice. I could understand Alice’s worry. Jasper could be in possible danger. I knew it would be eating her on the inside. Edward sat on the largest sofa next to the table with the phone on it. I knew that he wouldn’t move from that spot until everyone had returned home again. I crawled into his lap and he wrapped his ice cold arms around me. It was soothing.

“Edward? What’s going on?” His decision to tell me took less than a second for him to decide on.

“There was a vampire on our land.”

I gasped and my chest throbbed.

“But he doesn’t know about us, so he didn’t know that he was on our land.”

I gasped again. “But Jake would’ve been in his wolf form!”

“He was. The vampire was terrified. He’d never seen a werewolf before.”

“Is he young then?”

“Well he’s sixteen years old, that’s what he told Nessie, but he’s a perfectly mature vampire, he’s not a newborn. He didn’t put up a fight.”

“I wouldn’t either.”

“It’s difficult to understand. I wish I could hear him, he’s too far away at the moment, but he doesn’t pose any threat to us - yet.

“Can you still hear Carlisle and Jasper?”

“Yes. They’re getting close. I’ll be able to hear them and know what’s happening.”

“Please share it.” Alice said half way between begging and demanding.

Everything was quite for six minutes - I was counting the seconds in my head.

“He wants a way out.” Edward said suddenly, making me jump. “He doesn’t want to be a monster. Carlisle’s giving him options.”

“Can you hear him?” I asked cautiously.

“Yes. He’s thinking everything through very thoroughly. He’s thinking of everything. Mainly about the six other vampires he’s yet to meet.”

“Let me guess, I’m being kept secret for the time being.”

“Yes, it’s the simplest, safest way.”

I nodded. That was true. I felt sorry for the vampire that had run into Jacob. Who would want to run into the most powerful vampire family in the world?

“He’s made his decision.”

Everyone’s eyes looked straight at Edward.

“He’s coming back here.”

All I heard was my own gasp and my eyes picked up a swirl of colours. The next thing I knew I was sitting on the end of my bed, my eyes struggling to catch up. Edward was standing next to me. I didn’t have to ask.

“This is the safest way. He’s agreed to live our way of life but we don’t know how much self-control he has. You’re going to stay up here out of temptations way. Okay?”

I nodded. I would be incredibly outnumbered, so I obeyed. Edward vanished. I listened very closely. I heard everyone gather in the hallway. I guessed that Emmett would be standing at the bottom of the stairs. I immersed myself in Twilight to pass the time. I was severely wrenched back into the present when I heard the front door close. I slipped gingerly off of my bed and tip-toed to the door. I pressed my ear up against it and listened very carefully.

“Tyler, this is my family.” Carlisle’s voice was full of familiar authority and pride. “This is my wife Esme. And these are our children, Rosalie, Emmett, Edward, Bella, Alice and you already know Jasper, Jacob and Renesmee.”

I pictured him pointing at each member of the family and smiling. I still felt sorry for the vampire, Tyler, he must have been really scared. Maybe Jasper would help him feel at ease. I hoped he would. I heard them move into the living room. I imagined Emmett, Jasper, Edward and Jacob taking up some kind of defensive positioning. Somehow putting themselves between their other halves and Tyler, while also making sure they were able to protect me if need be. I listened closer still, trying to make out words or sentences. Edward suddenly spoke louder, which probably had something to do with my thought.

“Tyler, this is my Bella, we’ve been married for almost twelve years now.” I could hear the love and pride in his voice. “Renesmee is our daughter if you didn’t already notice the resemblance. Bella carried and gave birth to Nessie while she was still human.”

“Wow.” I faintly heard Tyler’s voice. It was smooth and upper classed. He sounded as though he came from the early twentieth century, around the same time as Edward, a time that only Carlisle, Esme, Alice and Edward had lived through. I gasped and shuddered when my name was mentioned. I pressed my ear to the floor, hoping it would allow me to hear more clearly.

“. . . so Mattie is a mixture between a werewolf a vampire and a human, she’s very intelligent and has good judgement despite her age. She was born five years ago in September, but she is physically and mentally ‘fifteen’.”

I wondered why Edward had told this stranger about me. Maybe he thought it would be safer to warn Tyler to stay away, that way he wouldn’t accidentally meet me. In Edward’s eyes that would be disastrous.

“Is she most like a werewolf then?” Tyler asked. I heard curiosity and innocence in his voice, his age had stuck with him throughout the century he had lived.

“I think it would be better if we let her tell you, but not tonight.” Edward said firmly.

“Tyler, I think it would be best if I took you hunting now, so that you can meet Mattie when she awakes in the morning.” Carlisle said distracting both Tyler and Edward from their conversation. Tyler said nothing. He was probably feeling awkward.

“Who else wants to come?”

I heard a few get to their feet. I guessed that Alice and Jasper would be among them, Jasper for Tyler’s sake and Alice for Jasper’s. I ran to the back wall of my bedroom and peeked through the curtains. I saw five people disappear into the distance. Esme’s caramel hair flew in the wind. I saw a glimpse of Jasper’s honey-coloured hair, contrasting with Alice’s black. My assumption had been correct. A reasonably tall, slim vampire had been running next to Carlisle. I saw less than a second of him, but it made my heart lurch in a way that I didn’t understand. My heart clicked into place and started beating uncontrollably fast. I took shallow breaths and calmed myself. I slowly opened my door and crept down the stairs. Edward gave me a knowing look and gestured for me to join him. I flew with a speed that I’d forgotten and flung myself into his lap. It was there that I fell asleep.
