The moment his emerald green eyes captured mine I couldn’t believe that I was staring at such beauty. The way the warm England breeze blew threw his wild curls instantly made him look like a model. But, I could only imagine what he thought of me. A girl with dirt stains on her pants and shirt, uncombed hair, and holey shoes. I was just the homeless girl.

His world was obviously so different than mine.

Just for a second I swore I could have seen deep dimples on the side of his cheeks as a small smile appeared on his face. “Uh did you not hear me? Get out of here!” the security guard asked. I regrettably tore my eyes away from the boy and nodded “Okay. Sorry again” I whispered.

“Mina…is dat boy got lotsa money?” she asked.

I chuckled and whispered “Yea. I think so” I said and continued down the long path exiting the wealthy neighborhood. “Mina and Izzy don’t got money wite?” she said.

She was right...we had nothing. We were homeless.

5. All My Fault

As I splashed my little sister in the river I tried to forget about the boys…I don’t know why I couldn’t get them out of my mind. But I couldn’t keep letting my mind wander, I had to be on my game at all times.

I found my sister crouched over looking into the water. “Wats those things swimming awound?” she asked pointing to the tiny fish that swam by.

“Those are fish” I smiled to her. I loved watching the fascination cross her face because she had never seen a fish before, but maybe one day I could take her fishing or something. “They are so pweettyyy!” she squealed using her small hands to try and capture one.

Of course a small droplet falling from the sky had to ruin the cute moment as I glanced up at the dark sky continuing to feel raindrops fall down upon us.

“Come on love we gotta get out of here” I said lifting her up in my arms and placing her on my back. Due to her weight it was easy for me to run through the forest, which was one thing I was very used to.

Running Away.

Thankfully for me the rain wasn’t too hard as it pounded against my skin. I tried not to think about how primal we looked. I mean I was running through the now mud covered forest barefoot…I probably looked like a wild child.

It only took about 10 minutes until we emerged from the trees and stood at the edge of a street that I quickly recognized.

“Sweetie we will be out of this rain in a few minutes” I said quickly looking back to find my cute little sister catching raindrops on her tongue.

We were both freezing and shivering by the time we arrived in central London, the rain still fell and the sky became darker as the sun drifted away behind the clouds.

It wasn’t long until the sophisticated rich part of central London turned into the lower-class poor part of London.

I kept my eyes forward not daring to make eye contact with any of the people I had passed even though they were all saying inappropriate things to me. All I had to do was find Mrs. Jamie, she was the only person I could remotely call nice around here.

“Ahh look who’s back. You know he will be wanting to see you” a boy around my age smirked as he tugged his jacket closer to him.

I instantly frowned knowing exactly what he was talking about but chose to ignore it.

It was a huge relief when I found the large tent situated beside one of the abandon buildings. I couldn’t climb in fast enough as I laid Izzy down on a small mattress.

“Mina! Where have you been I have been worried sick!” Mrs. Jamie smiled warmly. “Sorry, just trying to get out of this place ya know?” I answered wrapping Izzy in a ripped old blanket Mrs. Jamie and I had found a few weeks ago.

“Yea I know. But I know for a fact that if anyone gets out of this place it’s going to be you” she said pulling out a blanket and handing it to me.

“What makes you say that?” I asked as I observed her face. It was covered in wrinkles but her youth was held in her eyes, they were a dark chocolate that almost looked black but held so much emotion in them.

“Look at yourself, I mean you are stunningly beautiful, insanely smart, and you have a big heart. Don’t let the streets change that for you okay?” She said reaching her elderly hand and placing it on mine.

“Thanks Mrs. Jamie. Sometimes I wish I was stronger, for Isabella. I mean she doesn’t even really know what’s going on she deserves so much better” I said instantly feeling terrible about how our lives have been.

“You both deserve so much better. We can’t change how we get into situations like this, but we can change how we get out of them” she smiled warmly.

I was about to thank her for her sweet words when a huge growl erupted from my stomach. “Shit” I whispered clutching my stomach, “Mina, when was the last time you ate?” Mrs. Jamie said filled with concern. “I don’t know maybe 3 or 4 days ago. It’s no big deal I’m fine” I dismissed.

Mrs. Jamie was about to scrutinize me I’m sure but in came….Mark. Mark was basically the guy who came around the streets to try and get girls to prostitute. For some reason he had always had an interest in me and I hated that.

“What do you want!?” I spat at him. He just smirked that evil smirk of his and said “As much as I respect my elders, get the hell out Jamie” he said calmly.

“No! You are not about to do this to these babies. This is my place” she said angrily. “Fine” he said and disappeared from the tent only to reappear with 2 other guys. One grabbed Mrs. Jamie and the other grabbed my sister and that’s when I snapped. “Get. Your. Hands.Off.Of.Them” I growled.

“Oh or what? What are you going to do?” He challenged. I was frozen as I watched my sister burst into tears and squirm in the man’s arms.

“Fine! Just don’t hurt them please!” I cried. “If you listen then I won’t” he said putting his hand on my cheek. I scoffed and turned my head away at his touch. The moment the men disappeared I could not control my tears.

What if they did something bad to her? This was all my fault! I should have just stayed with those boys and none of this would be happening. “Why did you run away from me Mina?” he said lowly inching closer to me as I backed away.

“Leave me alone” I whispered feeling the tears pool over onto my cheeks now.

“You think you can just leave? This is your home now. I am the only one who can give you clothes, food, and shelter not this fucked up disgusting tent that you sleep in. All you have to do is show off the hot body of yours” he said allowing his hands to wander up my legs.

In all honesty he was right, he could give me all I needed but there was no way in hell I was being a prostitute!

“I said leave me alone!” I growled slapping him straight across his face. The moment my hand hit his cheek I wanted to kill myself. I just hit one of the most dangerous guys I had ever met and the second his eyes reached mine I ran.

I bolted out of the tent only to hear him screaming after me. “Mina! Get your ass back here!”

My feet wouldn’t move fast enough as I heard his pounding ones race behind me. I didn’t get far before I was pinned against the side of an alley way and the worst part was the fact that our homeless community saw what was about to happen and no one did anything.

Everyone was frightened of Mark and they had good reason.

The first blow was to my stomach and knocked the wind out of me, the rain had subsided and I glanced up at the sky just waiting for him to finish me off like he was going to. The next one was to my face, and it fucking hurt.

I began to let out a scream as the force of the hit made me fall to my knees but I was only pulled back up by him. The beating continued until I could barely move because of the numbness that had overcome my body.

As he laughed harshly and began to tear my clothes off the only thing I could think about was my sister. How this whole thing was my fault, I should have just let us stayed with our drunken abusive parents.

It probably would have been a lot better than the hell we were living now. My vision was becoming blurry and I did everything I could to try and push him away but I was too weak.

“Now you’re going to fucking get what you deserve” he spat. I closed my eyes bracing myself but…nothing happened. I was being held up by him but his presence was taken away as I fell to the ground not really feeling the impact.

I could hear people shouting and yelling but I couldn’t understand what they were saying.

Only one voice made me open my eyes for a moment before I let the darkness take over me. “Don’t Fucking Touch Her!”
