Chapter 23

The Ending

Maggie Butler

The honks outside of my house aroused me from my sleep.

I pick my phone up, the light blinding me, checking the time.

3:30. Wow I slept late. That thought would have been going through my mind, but instead, I was jumping out of bed, fumbling for clothes and frantically straightening my hair.

Gracey, Julia, and I were all going to a movie, out to eat, then that stupid talent show they were forcing me to go to.

I wiggle on my dark skinny jeans, throwing on a long necklace, grab my phone, and run outside.

"Sorry! Sorry! I just woke up! I'm sorry!" I apologize, rushing to the car.

I jump in, zipping up my hoody.

"Finally, geez we've been here for hours." Gracey rolls her eyes.

"Really?" I ask, feeling guilty.

"Nah, we just got here." Julia says.

"Wow guys." I laugh.

We drive to the movies, singing along to the radio. I swing my hair around, moving my sitting hips to the beat.

Julia had a Jeep that she recently got, so it had no doors or a top.

We finally got to the movies.

"What movie guys?" Gracey asks.

"The Host!" Julia and I shout in unison.

"Okay guys, calm down. Woah there guys calm down." Gracey jokes, over exaggerating.

We buy the tickets, walking towards the movie.

"You guys read the book?" I ask, curious.

"Started it... Never finished it." Gracey laughs.

Julia shakes her head. "Did you?"

"Yeah it was really good." I say.

"Wow, that was a great movie." Julia says.

Gracey and I nod in agreement. Hardly any movies do, but this one brought me to tears.

We go out to eat at diner. One of those little ones on the outskirts of town, that have the bright neon signs blinding you as you drive up.

"Best Pancakes in the World" the sign said as we walked in.

I sat down across the booth as Julia and Gracey squeezed onto the other side. The red seat stuck to my thighs, making a gross sound when I moved.

"Do we have to go to this talent show?" I groan.

They exchange glances and Gracey opens her mouth to talk, but I cut her off.

"Why do you guys keep doing that every time I ask about the talent show?" I persist.

They glance at each other.

"There! Right there! You just did it!" I exclaim.

"What? No. If we are we don't notice." Julia lets out a shaky laugh.

I lean back and cross my arms over my chest, back hitting the hard back rest, as I try to hold back my flinch and keep my hard stare.

"Fine. We weren't going to tell you but," Gracey starts as Julia looks at her with wide eyes. "We wanted you to learn from the people who do this because you have talent!"

It was a obvious and bad lie, but I was going to humor them.

"Alright." I say, getting a shocked reaction out of both of them, confirming it was a lie.

We finish eating, and start driving to the school. There were lots of vans parked out of the school, holding what I assumed was equipment.

"Hey I'm going to pop to the bathroom meet you in." Julia says.

"Me too." Gracey says quickly before scurrying after Julia.

"Okay then." I say to myself before walking into the theatre.

My eyes scan the rows for 3 consecutive seats. I find some, placing my boots in the other seats, to save the spots.

The velvet seat felt nice under my touch. For some reason, I felt nervous.

As the lights begin to dim, Gracey and Julia finally arrive.

"Finally." I whisper, pulling my boots back on.

"Well, sorry!" Gracey drawls, quite loud, I might add. Everyone turns to stare at us. When they turn back, I slap her in the arm.

"Ouch!" She yell-whispers, rubbing her arm in "pain".

"You deserved it." I mutter under my breath, still angry about the situation I was being held hostage in.

"Hello ladies and gentlemen!" The host says. Silent murmurs spread through the crowd as they attempt to say hello back.

"First up we have the band," he looks at his index card skeptically. "Herbal Escense!" Snickers run through the crowd.

"Isn't that a shampoo?" Someone from the crowd yells. Someone runs onto the stage and whispers in the hosts ear.

"'Scuse me. External Escense." He gestures his hands to where people were pushing a drum set out into the stage. There was three boys and a girl.

"Hey. We're External Escense." The girl says before grabbing the mic and singing along with the beat. They were good, just not quite my taste. I wouldn't go all the way to Screamo, but it was hard rock.

A few more people came and went, nothing catching my eye. I began to twiddle my thumbs and play with my hair out of boredom.

"Well this is our last act! This next band would like remain anonymous." He says before strutting off, obviously trying to say, "Hey, I'm available."

First, a brown headed boy with hair that was short but not too short, comes out. He is followed by another brown headed boy, 'cept this one had longer hair, in a quiff style. Next comes the boy from the swings, which makes me sit up a little straighter. Finally, Niall walks out, making me a million times more curious of what was going on.

Niall pulls a stool out, pulling the guitar he was holding onto his lap. "This is Irresistible." He says in that heart-throbbing Irish accent.

They are all holding mics, except Niall has one on a stand.

He starts strumming a romantic melody that makes my ears ring with pleasure.

A familiar voice begins to sing, although I am unable to pinpoint where I know it from. "Don't try to make me stay," then, the unexpected happens. Harry walks out. My mouth drops open in shock and Julia and Gracey look at me with smug looks on their faces, clueing that they set this up.
"Or ask if I'm okay
I don't have the answer
Don't make me stay the night
Or ask if I'm alright
I don't have the answer."

The tears unexpectedly flew to my eyes.

The short haired brown headed boy begins to sing.
"Heartache doesn't last forever
I'll say I'm fine
Midnight ain't no time for laughing
When you say goodbye."

All of their voices together made my heart skip a beat.
"It makes your lips so kissable
And your kiss unmissable
Your fingertips so touchable
And your eyes irresistible."

"I've tried to ask myself
Should I see someone else?
I wish I knew the answer." Niall sings in that voice I heard that day in the ballroom.

"But I know, if I go now, if I leave
Then I'm on my own tonight
I'll never know the answer." Harry stares right at me as he sings. My eyelashes flutter, copying my heart.

"Midnight doesn't last forever
Dark turns to light
Heartache flips my world around
I'm falling down, down, down,
That's why." Short haired one sings.

"I find your lips so kissable
And your kiss unmissable
Your fingertips so touchable
And your eyes irresistible

It's in your lips and in your kiss
It's in your touch and your fingertips
And it's in all the things and other things
That make you who you are and your eyes irresistible.

It makes your lips so kissable
And your kiss unmissable
Your fingertips so touchable
And your eyes, your eyes, your eyes,
Your eyes, your eyes, your eyes

The tears are now running down my face. I couldn't take it anymore. I run out of the building. Harry had dropped his mic, yelling my name and running after me. I get outside and throw my head back, newly found rain splashing on my face. I hear the door open again.
I glanced back and see Harry running out. I begin to step forward, to get away from him, but he pulls me back towards him. People start flowing out of the theatre since the show was over, but stopping to watch the spectacle.

"Maggie. I am so sorry. I know you could never forgive me but I don't care. I just want to have you. Maggie. I love you." My breath hitched in my throat. He loved me?

"Harry... We are completely different. I'm weird and a nerd and unsocial and well a freak. You're... You're handsome and popular and funny. I just don't see how that can happen." I say sadly looking at the ground.

He lifts my chin up with his pointer finger, looking me dead in the eye. "Maggie. I don't care if I'm popular and you're not or you're popular and I'm not. All that matters is that you make me happy, and I make you happy. We can have live a happily ever after ending... Like a fairy tale." He says.

Now the tears threatening to fall over the edge were not tears of sadness, but of relief and happiness. The rain pelts down around us, making this even more romantic. We are both soaking wet, which made it a little less romantic, but right now all I could focus on was Harry. I stare at him in awe.

Then, he grabs my face in his large hands and presses his lips to mine. I wrap my arms around his body. I forgot how amazing his lips felt pressed hungrily to mine. I hear a squealing noise. I pull away and turn to my right Lacie was there, stomping her foot like a two-year-old. I couldn't help but let out a snort.

"So?" Harry asks. I look at him questioningly. "Do you love me?"

"Harry Styles, I love you more than I should." I say.

He grins and presses his lips to mine again. The crowd that had grown around us erupted in applause. I smile against his lips. The rain was running in between our mouths, cooling them off after the heat from each other. I pull away and look around.

Niall and the other bandmates stand there, smirking, a girl I didn't know who looked a bit older than me was standing there clapping like a maniac, Julia and Gracey were standing there, smirking and slow clapping, Kyle, Jarod, and Logan were laughing and somewhat clapping, and Chase, well, was being Chase. Seeing Chase made me think back to that night. I gulp. He was standing, well more like leaning, against the wall of the theatre, clapping even slower than Julia and Gracey, but he wasn't smiling.

Then, noticing I was looking at him, he smirked. "Nerds!" He shouts playfully over the crowd. I laugh and walk towards him. He looks startled but quickly consumes himself.

"Hey Butler."

"Hey Chase." He frowns a bit. "What?" I ask.

"You called me Chase." I shrug. He scratches the back of his neck.

"Well, I guess I should start calling you Maggie then," he states. Then, I do something so surprising that I was amazed. I wrap my arms around him. He didn't know what to do at first, then he wraps his arms around me.

"Chase," He raises an eyebrow. "Can we put this whole, erm, situation behind us?"

He nods. "might as well put our entire life behind us since, you know, i kinda,"

"Sounds good." I smile.

I put up a hand in farewell and walk back towards Harry. He meets me in the middle.

"All good?"

"All good." He grins and picks me up bridal style, kissing me and spinning me around.

I didn't know how my life was going to change or how I was going to end up or any of that shit. Quite frankly I had no clue if we were going to get married, or anything. I didn't even know if we would last that long. One thing is for certain though. I love Harry Styles.
