19. Letters and Pictures

"Are you positive about this?" The prince finally spoke after that eternal silence. He handed me back the bankbook. But not once did he lay his eyes on me, "Or are these all just your assumptions?"

"P-Prince.." I could barely speak.

Already beginning to walk away, he didn't look back when he said, "I'll come back to visit tomorrow." Without even saying it, I know that the prince was feeling uneasy about this. So am I. But he has a point, what if I'm just assuming all this? I mean, sometimes I do tend to just jump to conclusions.

I need to find out.

After about another hours or so of cooling my head off, I took a deep breath as I stood up. Mom was still asleep when I peeked through her door, so I decided that this was a perfect time to investigate. Silently, I tip-toed in and motioned towards the cabinet full of her belongings.

Before I started rummaging through her stuff, I glanced at mom. She looks so peaceful, and her hushed snoring gave me a little feeling of comfort. Suddenly I felt guilty about what I was about to do. It's wrong to be doubting my mother, but.. I'd already come to a verdict.

I must find out.

As quietly as possible, I pulled out the first drawer. It was filled with nothing but medicine and a couple hair ties. The second drawer was occupied by a bunch of cards that were from James and I. I read through a few of them, smiling at the cutely stupid things James wrote to mom. The third and last drawer were just clothes. I looked around the room for more possible places where there could be secrets. Then, I looked under the bed. There wasn't much, except for dust bunnies and wires. As I turned my head a little, my eyes caught sight of something shining underneath the cabinet.

I flattened my body a little more in order to be able to reach the object. Extending my skinny arm underneath the cabinet, I felt the corner of a cold box making contact with my fingertips. I struggled for a few short seconds, but soon enough I was able to pull the box out.

Once I had got the box, I noticed that it was a mini chest with a latch on it. But there was no lock. Perfect.

I placed the chest on top of the cabinet and dusted myself off. Then, I opened it and was surprised to see a pile of about two dozen old bankbooks. "Why is there so many.." I whispered to myself. I flipped through the majority of them and almost died when I saw that they were stamped with so many zero's. And by zero's I mean millions, and billions.

Just as I was about to skim through the last bankbook, something fell out and fluttered all the way to the ground. It was a picture. I squinted my eyes to look at it, but ended up picking it up anyway. When I bent down to get it, another paper came flying out of the bankbook in my hand. So, I picked up the photograph and the folded piece of paper.

First, I looked at the picture. It was a woman, and she was holding a baby. Then, I unfolded the old piece of paper. Before reading it, I gulped.

It said,

'Dear Sarah,

I'm truly sorry to have caused you so much trouble in order to suit my needs. I was very happy to hear the birth of the child. However, I also regret to say that I do not wish for that child to enter the Crawford family. Please Sarah, take care of the child.

Sincerely yours, Christopher Crawford.'

My jaw dropped, and I felt like I couldn't breathe. I was just crouched there, trembling. The corners of my eyes began to feel hot, and very soon I could feel tears forming. "A..lex..." A voice murmured above me. Still trembling, I stood up and stared at mom.

When she saw the tears running down my cheeks, and the items in my hands, she gasped. "Alex, don't look at that!" Mom sat up and threw the blankets off her legs. But then she stopped.

She stopped and just sat there, hands over her mouth. I could hear her whispering 'no' repeatedly as water also began dropping from her eyes.
