9. Chapter Nine

As their meeting commenced, I was forced out to the hall chair with more than a few grumbles. I didn’t mind all that much; Louis’s mood was making me uneasy. I sat in the chair with my elbows resting on my knees, bent over texting. My manager had tried to call me several times, but the building had almost no service so none of them went through. I gave up trying to call back and ended up texting him instead.

>We have a new song for you to cover, Katie. We’d like it if you could come in today around 2:30-I guarantee it’ll be a hit.

I texted him back, standing up from my chair:

>I’ll come in now, actually. Maybe we can get a few more in. Be at the studio in 20 xx.

I texted Louis telling him where I’d be (strictly to avoid direct confrontation) and took the elevator back down to the lobby. I whistled for a cab and gave my directions. I stared out the window the whole time, failing miserably not to think about my messy life. I still felt guilty about the Jace situation, but nothing was going to come of it; why even mention it and create more drama? Like we needed any more drama in our relationship. I hated being mad at Louis, but what else was there left to do anymore? I sighed and blinked slowly, resting my head against the window. Singing would keep my mind off of things for a while. At least until work…there I had to be with Jace. What was up with him? I couldn’t shake the feeling that he was hiding something. He was so familiar. Those eyes of his…they could stare right through me.

We arrived at the towering studio building just as the sun broke through the clouds. I pulled my shades on, exiting the cab. I caught a few stares, mostly from girls who recognized me because of Louis. They didn’t approach me, just whispered and stared. I rolled my eyes behind my shades. Rumors. I made my way through the lobby of the building, riding the elevator up to the 13th studio floor. I found my manager, Aaron, in the recording studio listening over my old tracks.

“Hey, Aaron,” I announced as I walked through the door, pulling my sunglasses onto my head. He shot me a smile and pointed up, directing my attention to the music; it was my cover of Lights by Ellie Goulding. I smiled back at him. “Did you start listening to this because you know she’s my favorite?” I yelled.

He turned it down. “Actually no, I happened to be listening to the radio before you got here and I came across this,” he beamed. My face fell in shock.

“I’m on the radio?!” I screamed. “Shit, Aaron they put me on the radio!” I ran forward and hugged him. “How? When did you send it in?” I demanded.

“I sent it in yesterday; they loved it immediately and said they’d put it through the mix. Katie,” Aaron paused, grabbing my shoulders to level with my face. “Your cover is number 3 on The Billboard’s 100 in the U.S. and number 1 in the U.K.; they absolutely love you!” I couldn’t help but return his enthusiasm; people actually liked my music!

“What do we do now?” I asked, shaking from pure excitement. “What song did you have for me to cover?”

“Well,” Aaron said as he pulled up iTunes on his laptop. “I was thinking you could cover a song that’s…different for your style preference just so we can toy with it.” I nodded, watching as he clicked several times. “Here we are,” he finally said, turning the speakers up.

When Cher Lloyd came across, I lit up immediately. “Want U Back! Yes, I’ll do it!” Aaron laughed at me, as I started to jam out, mouthing the words. We stayed in the studio for about an hour, selecting a song list for me to cover. I finished recording my new cover just as 4:30 hit. I walked out of the recording room, giving Aaron a high five.

“Do you think we could get one more in? I have a really cool idea,” I said with a wicked grin. “I have a cover idea for Panic! At The Disco’s song The Ballad of Mona Lisa.”

“Well, let’s hear it Katie! You’re in charge here,” he chuckled. I laid out my basic plan, tweaking it with him. By the time I stepped back into recording I was excited.

“You ready?” Aaron asked through the microphone. I gave him a thumbs up, sliding my headphones on. The music started playing and I looked through the glass at Aaron, happy with our work.

“She paints her fingers with a close precision; he starts to notice empty bottles of gin. And takes a moment to assess the sin she’s paid for.

A lonely speaker in a conversation; her words are swimming through his ears again, ‘There’s nothing wrong with just a taste of what you’ve paid for.’

Say what you mean, tell me I’m right, and let the sun rain down on me. Give me a sign, I want to believe.

Woah-oh-ooh-oh, Mona Lisa, you’re guaranteed to run this town. Woah-oh-ooh-oh, Mona Lisa, I’d pay to see you frown.”

As I reached the final verse, “There’s nothing wrong with just a taste of what you’ve paid for,” I looked up to see five more bodies present in the studio room. I smiled and gave a small wave as I hung my headphones up.

“Beautiful, Katie. One thing though; when you reach the final line, don’t be afraid to let that come out more. That’s the only thing going on and we need that to come out stronger.”

“Do you want to run over it again?” I asked him. Sure, the boys were here, but I was working right now; they’d know to respect that.

Aaron chuckled. “You really want this out on the radio, don’t you?” He asked through the microphone. I nodded with a smirk. “Alright, let’s get the ending right and then you can listen to the finished product, alright?” I nodded and put the headphones back on.

After five minutes of fixing, I stepped out and met them in the studio room. “That was awesome, Katie; they’ll love it,” Aaron praised. I sat down next to him, wheeling close to see what he was doing.

“So, I want to make sure the remix sounds good with your voice over the recording. It sounded great when you were in there, but sometimes it changes when you actually put it down as a file,” Aaron explained as he glanced from the computer screen to my face.

“That makes sense, I guess,” I answered with a smile. “So when can you send it in?” I asked.

“So pushy!” Aaron exclaimed, bumping my shoulder. I rolled my eyes and shoved him back. “If this sounds as great as it was originally, I’ll send it in today.”

We listened over it a few times, testing the music against my voice. When we finally reached a level we both liked, we saved it and Aaron burned it onto a disk. He also put Want U Back on there, just in case they wanted to switch it up. “There we are; I can run this over there as soon as you leave,” Aaron smiled.

We stood up and I walked over to the boys. “Thank you so much Aaron; I really appreciate this.”

“No problem, Katie,” Aaron smiled back. I hear Louis clear his throat as his arm made its way tightly around my waist. Aaron glanced at him warily. “I’m assuming this is your boyfriend?”

“Yes, Louis Tomlinson. And you’re Aaron,” Louis interjected, giving a sharp nod. I elbowed him slightly, feeling him take a small step back to catch himself.

“We should probably go before Louis starts throwing punches,” Harry joked, linking his arm with mine and pulling me forward. Louis exchanged my waist for my left hand, lacing our fingers together. I threw a smile over my shoulder to Aaron before we all walked out.

When we were safely standing in front of the elevator, I took my hand out of Louis’s but kept myself linked with Harry, making Louis shoot me a glare. “You know what you did,” I said without turning around.

“He was practically hitting on you, Katie,” Louis said with a voice of disgust.

I turned around to face him. “He’s 35, Louis! I’m almost 19; I promise you that would never happen,” I retorted. “With all your suspicion of me possibly cheating on you, maybe you’re the one who’s cheated.”

I gained no response and I looked back at Louis, meeting his terrified and guilty expression. “Louis,” I said, trying to meet his averting eyes. Harry’s grip on my arm tightened, pulling me towards the open elevator doors.

“Katie, let’s go,” Harry whispered. I resisted him, trying to walk back to Louis.

“Not until I get a straight answer out of Louis,” I snapped. Harry pulled me into the elevator along with Niall, leaving Louis, Zayn and Liam to catch another. “What the fuck are you doing?” I snapped as the doors closed.

“Louis can tell you himself,” Harry mumbled, a hard edge in his voice.

I turned away, my arms crossed angrily. I felt a hand on my shoulder and turned to see Niall with a gentle smile. “It’s going to be okay, Katie. We’re here for you if it goes wrong,” he said with sincerity. I offered him a small smile, leaning in for a hug; he always managed to make me feel better no matter what.

We exited the elevator and I was quickly led to outside to a waiting car. “Where are we going, Harry? I need to talk to Louis now,” I trailed off as we all crawled in.

“Back to Louis’s place,” Harry replied, putting a hand on my knee. “I’m going to be right there with you.”

“Harry, that’s not a good idea,” Niall warned.

“Oh, I’ll be fine; I’m here for Katie’s sake,” Harry explained. I felt my stomach go queasy; I already knew what it was.

The car ride was silent; we were all too tense to speak. When we reached the hotel where Louis was staying, I jumped out and walked briskly inside, Harry and Niall close behind. They led me up to Louis’s room where I had been just this morning. Only this time, so much was changed.

I sat down on the couch, my leg bouncing up and down in angry anticipation. I switched to crossing my legs and bouncing my foot, then to pacing in front of the couch, Niall watching me with a worried expression.

“Katie, you need to calm down.”

“Don’t tell me to fucking calm down,” I mumbled, rubbing my hands. Harry stood up from his perch on the couch’s arm, his phone in hand.

“They’re on their way up now,” he said quietly, meeting my gaze. I felt myself go weak; I couldn’t do this. I couldn’t.

I quickly turned to Harry, seeking my last chance for an answer. “Louis cheated didn’t he?” He didn’t meet my gaze, but instead dropped his eyes to the floor, biting his lip; it was all the confirmation I needed. A hand flew up to my mouth. “Oh God,” I whispered against it. I grabbed the counter behind me, trying to stay standing. Niall looked shocked.

The door opened and I looked up to see Louis’s face, red and streaked with tears. He met my eyes, his growing wide as he walked up to me. “Katie I’m so so-“

I cut him off as the back of my left hand slapped across his cheek, his head flying to the right. “You son of a bitch!” I screamed. “You stupid son of a bitch how could you!” I shoved him backwards, Zayn walking forward slightly to catch him.

“Katie, please let me explain,” Louis sobbed.

“There’s nothing to fucking explain, Louis. I’ve heard every excuse under the sun from you and I’m sick of it,” I spat back with disgust. “You lied to me, Louis; you’re a liar and a cheater. You broke your promise to me!” I advanced towards him, my fist making contact with his chest. I backed him against the wall, my fist not stopping.

“Katie, please!” Louis grabbed my wrists, his broken expression locking with mine. “Please, it meant nothing; we had just fought and I was angry and upset and I got drunk and it just happened!”

“It just happened, did it? It just fucking happened and it meant nothing? That’s the biggest load of shit I’ve ever heard. If it meant nothing you wouldn’t have done it!” I yelled, pulling myself away from him. “You can’t even remember who she is! Do you know how disgusting that is? You’re sick and I never should have been stupid enough to trust you,” I growled. Louis looked up at me, tears escaping him. “Here I thought you were just jealous and trying to accuse me of cheating on you with every guy I work with, but all along you were trying to find some sort of scapegoat so you could feel better about yourself.”

“That’s not true Katie!” Louis protested. “I didn’t want you to make the same mistake I did and then we would be over with!”

“You think we aren’t over with now?! You’re fucking stupid if you think we aren’t done now. I’m done with your twisted bullshit, Louis. I’m done!” I yelled. I paused a moment to catch my breath. “I thought this whole time you were gone that you actually missed me. Instead, you were out fucking some whore from a strip club. Then you come back and you sleep with me! You have the nerve to actually sleep with me after you’ve been with some stranger?!” I sobbed, turning away from him. “I’ve never felt so used in my life,” I whispered.

“Katie…I’m so sorry I hurt you,” Louis choked out.

I spun around to face him again. “Sorry won’t fucking fix this! You used me! You hurt me, Louis. You destroyed me! How am I supposed to believe the past six months of our relationship weren’t just one big lie so you could get around sleeping with other girls!”

“Please, don’t hate me,” he whispered.

I hit his chest again. “I fucking hate you!” I screamed. I backed away. “Leave me alone,” I growled. Louis looked up in shock. “Leave me alone; don’t call me, don’t text me, don’t look for me, don’t come to my fucking work, don’t send someone to check up on me, don’t come to my house, don’t bother me ever again. I want nothing to do with you anymore. I hate you,” I yelled. I took off my promise ring and threw it at him. I watched as it fell out of his hand to the floor. “Why don’t you go give it to your whore?”

I walked past Zayn and Liam, slamming the door shut behind me. “Fuck you!” I turned around and screamed, kicking the wall. I walked into the elevator, barely able to see the buttons as tears started spilling out of my eyes. I collapsed against the back, not even bothering to press a button. “Fuck you,” I sobbed, my head buried in my arms. The doors closed and I just sat there, crying.

The doors suddenly opened and I looked up to see Louis standing there, a red welt growing just underneath his right eye. “Katie, please, don’t do this. I love you, Katie!”

I stood up and walked up to him, slapping him again. “I don’t love you,” I spit out. Louis pushed me up against the wall, his body pressed to mine. His lips fervently locked with mine as I felt one of his tears fall onto my cheek. His lips moved against mine, begging for a response. Part of me wanted so badly just to give in, to kiss him back and let him make love to me again like he had last night; to run my fingers roughly through his hair and feel him become part of me again, just like we always had; but that part was small. I shoved him off angrily, drawing my hand over his cheek a third time.

“Louis, get off of her now!” We looked over to see Harry striding up to us, a dark expression on his face. I took this opportunity to break free and run over to Harry, burying my face into his chest as I sobbed uncontrollably. “What; can’t stand the sight of someone else caring for Katie the way you couldn’t?” Harry spit out. “You heard her; leave her alone. You don’t take care of her anymore.” Harry led me to the elevator, not letting me see Louis’s face. The doors closed and I clung to Harry as I cried. “I’m so, so sorry this happened to you; you don’t deserve this,” Harry whispered gently.

“You…you didn’t tell me…you bastard,” I breathed out between sobs.

I felt his fingers massage my lower back. “And I wanted to so badly, Katie. I can’t believe he would do this to you. I tried to tell you earlier this morning but he stopped me. Katie, I’d never lie to you.”

“That’s what Louis always said; look where we are now, Harry.”
