14. Chapter Fourteen

I took my bow and exited the stage, welcomed by the warm embraces of my coworkers. I smiled and thanked them, satisfied with yet another performance. I looked over at Jace who was leaning against the wall smirking at me. I frowned, turning my head away quickly. Ever since the incident in my apartment in the summer, I hadn’t spoken to him. In fact, I hadn’t spoken to any of the boys either. I had kept to my word and ended all contact with them; little did they know, I meant to keep it that way. I was better, yes; my head was finally clear and I was focusing on my career more, I had a higher more steady pay and a growing fan base, and I was releasing my first album soon. It only consisted of about seven songs (all covers), but my producer said it would make for good publicity and would sell well.

“Pardon, are you Ms. Willows?” I turned to see a suited man walking towards me, a smile on his face. “My name is David and I’m with Shira’s Board of Directors. If you wouldn’t mind having a word, I think you’ll want to hear this proposition.”

“Oh, of course I’d love to! Erin, could you cover for me?” Erin nodded in excitement, ushering me away. I followed David to one of the empty tables on the side of the floor, taking a seat across from him.

“Ms. Willows, we’ve been monitoring your recent rise in success and we’d like to offer you a deal that would further boost that. How would you feel about collaborating a song with someone that’s…international?” David asked with a small smile.

“That would be fantastic! Who did you have in mind?” I asked eagerly.

“We’ve gotten into contact with Modest! Management and they’d love for you to collaborate with One Direction. Isn’t this fantastic?” I felt my heart stop, my knees grew shaky.

    “Uh…” I trailed off.

David looked concerned. “Is there a problem? I thought you’d be excited about this.”

“No I am…I’m just overwhelmed,” I lied, faking a smile. “Did they say when we start?”

“I knew you’d want to start as soon as possible, so I said we should start tomorrow at one at Shira’s studio. Since their tour is ended, they’ve been spending some down time around New York.”

I swallowed hard; they were here in New York already? I squirmed in my seat slightly. Could I really handle this? “Great, I’m looking forward to it, David,” I smiled. I shook his hand and we stood. I watched him walk out and I hugged myself, trying to find a way out of this. How would I react to seeing them? To seeing Harry or even… “Oh, Louis,” I whispered. Tomorrow wouldn’t be anything less than interesting.

I arrived at my apartment door, trying to find my key with the light from my phone. I sighed in frustration, dropping my keys in the process. “Need a hand, neighbor?” I looked up to see Jace smirking at me. “The hallway lights are being fixed tomorrow, don’t worry.”

“Oh…thanks but I’ll manage,” I brushed him off and bent down for my keys.

“Why don’t you talk to me?” I ignored him. “Katie, answer me.” I found the key and put it into the lock, opening my door.

“See you at work, Jace.” I walked in my door only for him to grab my arm. “Let go!” I yelled.

“Answer me then!” He pulled me back into the hall.

I looked into his eyes. “You’re just like Toby,” I growled.

Jace laughed darkly. “You’re surprised I’m much different? I thought you’d put the pieces together by now, Katie. Man, he described you as someone much smarter than this! Must have something to do with being with Harry and Louis, eh?”

I slapped him hard, getting my arm free. “You have no right to say anything about me or them! They’re better than you’ll ever hope to be!”

“I don’t want to be better, Katie. I’m not like your precious Toby was. I never aspired to change for you like my brother did!”

“Your brother?” I spluttered. “Your brother?!”

“Babe, I’m Toby’s older brother. Did he never tell you about me?”
