Karla is just a normal girl, living a normal life, with a normal family, with normal friends. At least that's the person you see when you walk in the hallways of Kingston high school. But she's not the person she looks like when you walk past her in the corridor. Her inside is filled with pain and guilt. Everything she can remember from when she was younger was the constant pain, and watching her mother beeing abused by her father. When she was 5 years old, he left. And even though her mom hated him, her brain told her that she still loved him. Ever since then her mother have been down, and it's all Karlas fault. If she just hadn't been born non of this would've happened. Her life is a gloom until one day when she bumps into a sweet canadian boy that'll change her life forever.

18. Landon

"Who am I even kidding I can't do this!" I grabbed my hair in my hands as I walked backwards and forwards through Justin's room. He was sitting in his sofa with his elbows on his knees. With a sigh he stood up and walked over to me. "Karla?" I shook my head. He grabbed my cheeks in his hands. "Karla." He stared into my eyes. I felt tears starting to form in my eyes. I quickly blinked them away. "You'll be safe." I stared into his brown eyes. "With me." I grabbed his neck and pulled him to my lips. It felt like forever since I had kissed him. It felt like my stomach was going to explode of butterflies, like I was on a rollercoaster, I loved it. "It was a good punch though." I whispered when we drew apart. He smiled widely. "Anything for my girl."

When I opened the door I heard a loud laugh from the kitchen. I think it was mum, I wasn't sure, I hadn't heard her laugh since... I don't even know. I walked around the corner and saw mum at the kitchen table, opposite her sat a man who I could only see from behind. I raised an eyebrow. "Mum?" Mum looked at me and her smile toned down. The man turned around and looked at me. For a minute I had feared that it was Jonah, but no, I had never seen this man before. "Uhm, Karla, this.." She gestured her hands towards the man opposite her. "Is Landon." He reached his hand out to me. "Very pleased to meet you." His hair was short, a darkbrown, almost black, quiff. On his nose were a pair of Ray Ban glasses. He was wearing dark jeans, a plaid shirt, buttoned all the way up and a bow tie. His teeth were perfectly positioned in a line. In a nerdy way he was kind of cute. For a  35 year old man. I shook his hand. "Nice to meet you too." I glanced at mum. "Landon and I have been seeing eachother for a while." I was surprised. But I was good at covering my feelings. "Oh, how fun!" I'm not sure if I thought it was fun. "So how did you guys meet?" They looked at eachother and smiled. "Landon is a co-worker of mine." I frowned. "Mum when did you start to work again?" She shook her head. "That isn't important, but this is." She smiled at Landon once again. "Well, I have homework to do so I'll go upstairs." I started to walk towards th staircase. "Oh Karla?" I turned around. After a quick glance at Landon I looked at mum. "Yeah mum?" "Is Justin coming over today?" I shook my head. "Mum I just got back from him, I don't think we need to be in eachother's company 24/7." I turned around and walked up the stairs. I heard the door close behind me. Guess Landon was gone. I was about to open the door to my room when I saw a paper on the table infront of the TV. I raised an eyebrow in wonder and picked it up. I skimmed through the text. My eyes grew wide. I clenched my fist as I almost ran down the stairs. Mum was standing by the dishwasher, taking out some plates and putting them up in the cabinet. "Mum?" She looked at me and then down at the paper in my hand. A tear was slowly strolling down my cheek. "What's this?" I raised up the paper to the height of my head. With guilty eyes and a face of pain she stared into my eyes. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you, I got the letter a few days ago and I.... I just couldn't figure out how to tell you." I shook my head. "Does Landon know?" She laughed and crossed her arms over her chest. "What am I supposed to tell him? Hi Landon, I have cancer, please don't break up with me?" Her right hand covered her eyes but I could still see the tear streaming down her face. She took a deep breath. "I've got cancer." Her hand moved down to cover her mouth. She looked down at the floor. I embraced her in my arms and let her cry into my chest. I silently rubbed her hair. "We're going to get through this, just like we get trough eveything." She shook her head. "I'm not sure we will."
