Waiting For Rain (One Direction)

Samantha Blake is your average 17 year old but she does not live in the average place. Her family live in a small town called Ashville where Sam, her siblings and a few other families are the only children. That's not the only thing though. It also hasn't rained for five years in Ashville despite the constantly grey skies and even far off lightning that they never hear the thunder of. For Sam life is boring until one dreary Saturday five teen boys move into the house next door. Sam's life immediately brightens, but only until she discovers that the boys have a dark secret that could either destroy Ashville or save it.

13. Show Me Again?

Liam's POV

I stifled a yawn as I slumped down the staircase.  It had been one hell of a night; we stayed up until two in the morning playing truth or dare.  At the bottom of the stairs I stole a quick glance to my left to see Louis sprawled over the main couch in his underwear.  Cathy would not be impressed if she found him, nor would she be impressed if she realised that her best bottle of wine was stashed in Niall's cupboard half empty.  Yeah, we had fun last night.

I poured myself a mug of coffee, even though I hated the taste of the stuff; I just needed a massive boost.  Luckily it was Saturday so the boys could sleep in, but I was sticking to a strict exercise routine, despite the fact that all werewolves stayed fit naturally.  I just liked the adrenalin rush of running down icy streets in Winter and through intricate parks in Summer.

"What are you doing, Liam?" Niall mumbled from the kitchen doorway; after he got something to eat I knew he would go straight back to bed.

"Just going for a run, care to join me, Nialler?" I asked politely, although I could predict the answer.

"Who, me? Running in the morning?" Niall scoffed, "No thanks mate." He shuffled around the corner with a mouth full of toast.  I let out a chuckle before striding to the front door and closing it silently behind me.  I jogged down the front steps and walked out the gate, setting my iPod to shuffle as I went.  I was looking at the screen as I walked down the street, when I hit something hard, yet squishy.

I looked up in surprise to see Sam in front of me looking equally startled.  She looked pretty fit in a singlet and sweatpants with neon pink sneakers, her iPod strapped to her arm in a special holder thing.  He hair was twisted up into a simple ponytail and she had a sweatband-like headband framing her hair.

"Oh, hi Liam," she stuttered.

"Hi Sam, what's got you out so early on a Saturday?"

"Oh, I always get up early on the weekend.  I get into a habit during the week and can't shake it off when the weekend rolls around," she shook it off lightly. "More importantly, why are YOU up so early?  Really, I don't think I've ever met a teenage guy who gets up before midday on Saturday," she laughed, making me laugh too.

"I don't know, it's just kind of refreshing, gets me in the right mindset to relax," I admitted.

"Oh, okay then, see you 'round" she smiled before jogging past me.  I shook my head as I ran in the opposite direction, chuckling slightly at her bouncy personality.

Before I knew it I had been running for nearly two hours and I was barely tired.  I would keep going, but Cathy and John would get suspicious if I was out running for four hours and barely got tired.  So I turned back from the quiet corner of town I was in and timed myself back to the house.

Just before I turned the door handle I heard someone call my name.  I turned to see Sam again, this time with her hair more dishevelled and sweat making her forehead gleam in the sunlight.

"Yeah Sam?"

"I was wondering if maybe I could, like, come over for the day if you're not busy?" she asked innocently, "It's just, Mum and Dad are out buying shoes for my little sister and Ben's not much company so..."

"Yeah, sure, pop over any time," I smiled and waved before turning back inside.

Two hours later...

Niall's POV

I was in the kitchen for the fourth time this morning making a bacon and egg sandwich when the doorbell trilled in my fine-tuned ears, making me cringe.  None the less I went to answer it and Sam was standing there looking, I must admit, rather adorable.  She was wearing a baggy Christmas themed jumper with snowmen on it, a white collared shirt, skinny jeans and UGGs.  Her hair flowed over her shoulders in golden crinkled waves, only masked at the top by a cream coloured beanie.  I could see she was wearing a fine layer of makeup but I really thought she didn't need it.

"Hey Niall.  Liam said I could come over because my parents are out with my little sister," she explained.

"Oh, okay," I replied before stepping aside to let her in.  I noticed she had a small worn out blue and white shoulder bag slung over her shoulder which she proceeded to dump on the couch.  I don't think she realised Louis was still there with no trousers on.

Sam's POV

"So, what were you guys planning on doing today?" I asked, sipping the hot chocolate Harry had made me.  That boy made a damn good hot chocolate.  Just then Zayn appeared in the kitchen doorway, obviously hearing the last part of our conversation.

"Well, I was going to sleep, but you just had to come along and ruin that!" He threw his hands in the air exasperatedly, walking to the fridge and pouring himself an orange juice.

"Actually," Liam said in a scolding tone, "we weren't really doing anything." Harry scoffed at the comment. "Do you have a problem, Harry?" Liam shot.

"No sir," Harry chuckled; I had learnt that the boys made entertainment by annoying Liam often.  Harry turned to me, "We'll do anything you want Sam," he winked with a cheeky smile.

I smiled devilishly.  "Uh, I'll...think about it," I giggled back, just as Louis stumbled into the kitchen.  He was looking rather dishevelled; his shirt was buttoned incorrectly, he was only wearing superman boxers and odd socks were falling of his feet.  His eyes were half asleep and bloodshot with dark rings underneath and he stank of alcohol.

"What happened last night?" He wiped his tired eyes lazily, "Oh yeah, truth or dare,"  He looked around for a bit, "How many beers did I have?"

"Six beers, ten shots, and you shared half a bottle of wine with Niall as a double dare; Mum's finest," Liam listed off making Louis groan in annoyance. "We took videos," Liam continued and handed me his iPod touch with the video already on the screen.  On the screen a miniature Louis and Niall were jumping on the couch doing karaoke to Sexy and I Know It holding bottles of beer, and in the next video Louis was skateboarding down the pitch black street in nothing but briefs and a snap-back with a beer in his hand.

"Damn guys, why didn't you invite me?" I laughed and handed Liam the iPod, but Louis snatched it halfway between my hand and Liam's and stalked away to the living room watching the videos and looking at the many photos.

"So, Sam," Harry turned the attention back to the first conversation, "what do you want to do today?" What did I want to do? Chill, watch Friends replays, play truth or dare...or....

"Well, I wouldn't mind knowing a bit more about the whole, y'know...werewolf thing." The boys looked a little surprised.

"Uhm, o-okay Sam, just...let us eat first, 'kay?" Niall finally stopped eating enough to contribute to the conversation.  I nodded in reply and kept sipping my hot chocolate while waiting for the boys to eat and then go up to their rooms and get changed.

Liam was the first to come down in a blue, red and white plaid shirt, tan chinos and classic red Converse.

Harry was next, sporting a purple Jack Wills jumper with the top of a white t-shirt sticking out the top, black jeans and white Converse.

Zayn came down third, smoothing his already perfect hair, in a white v-neck t-shirt, tan chinos and grey Nikes.

Niall was second last and shovelled down a cookie on his way, and was wearing a blue t-shirt, classic blue denim jeans and Supras.

Then there was Louis.  The still half asleep boy stumbled down the stairs, his hair not much better than before, in a black t-shirt, zipped-up hoodie, black chinos and navy TOMS.

When nearly all of us were settled around the living room - I was on the recliner, Louis and Harry were on the love seat, Liam was on the floor, Zayn was leaning against him, and Niall was in the kitchen 'bringing' snacks - Liam spoke up first. "So Sam, what do you want to know?"

"Uh..." I thought for a bit before I said anything stupid, but when I did speak it sounded crazy anyway, "What about the stuff you see on TV? Myths and stuff...are they true?"

"Like silver and the full moon and stuff?" Zayn confirmed.  Well, if that's what werewolves were associated with on TV, then yes.

"Yeah, I guess...I don't know much about all that supernatural stuff,"

"Okay, well," Niall started, now seated with his head resting on Louis and Harry's love-seat beside a bowl of chips, "the silver thing is true-"

"So if I stabbed you right now with a pure silver fork you would just go poof?" I interrupted excitedly.

"Not exactly," Niall continued. "That would weaken us and hurt like shit, not just because it's silver but also because we just got fucking stabbed...but we wouldn't die, no."

"Liquid silver is worse," Louis continued the explanation gravely.  I had a feeling this was going to take a while. "If it hits us it's like deadly acid.  In human form it sears like a burn, and in wolf form it does the same and singes off the patch of fur it hits.  If it's ingested or infects a wound then we die, yes.  It's a hunter's greatest weapon,"

"Hunters?" I asked timidly; this seemed to be a very grave topic.  The last I heard hunters shot rabbits and squirrels and deer on controlled properties, so I guessed this wasn't the same kind of hunter.

"Yeah," Harry confirmed, "There's' a select few of the population who, without evidence, believe that werewolves exist," he explained. "Of course, most of them imagine werewolves to be savage half-man-half-wolf creatures who howl to the full moon every month;  imagine that show Teen Wolf.  Mostly hunters are just thought of as crazy-"

"Until they find a town that actually has werewolves in the forest or has had werewolf sightings," Liam continued. "Then it gets serious.  Out comes the weapons - liquid silver capsules, wolfbane, guns with silver bullets - and we either haul our asses out of there or get the chop." Oh heck that sounds dangerously serious.  I wonder what wolfbane is?

It was silently for a moment, then, as though he read my mind Zayn continued, "Wolfbane is this plant that, for reasons we can't explain,  really hurts if we touch it, and is toxic if ingested of inhaled in powdered form.  Imagine...burning yourself on the stove only 100 times worse," he explained, "Hunters use it if they capture us as a kind of torture by brushing it against the victim's skin,"  I let out a little gasp.

"Why would anyone want to do that? Torture you, I mean?"

"Well," Louis started; I could tell he was much more sober now, "usually they can only capture one or two members of a pack at once, so they torture the captives until they spill information about the pack, which they should never do.  Our pack is like our family,"

"but what do you do that makes hunters want to kill you?"  The boys gave each other that wary glance I was so used to by now, and I immediately knew I wasn't about to get the full explanation. "So?"

"Well," Louis started, "a lot of hunters are religious, but strange uncommon religions or cults that make them believe they should eradicate evil,"

"And werewolves are considered evil?" I guessed sarcastically.

"Spot on," Niall laughed, and Louis gave him a serious glare. "Now, is there anything else you want to know?"

"What else is there to know?  I figured you don't just shift on the full moon, but do you do the whole TV cliche werewolf thing?"

To that the boys broke out into fits of laughter and I had a feeling I had said something really stupid, "Actually, that's one of the only things TV gets right," Zayn laughed, "The moon is, like, the traditional wolf symbol and, yeah, we do the whole full moon shift thing," he continued to ramble, but I guessed this was important information, "but it's also a time when we meet with other packs in the same forests and areas, but there's no other werewolf packs in this forest, let alone normal wolves,"

"Oh, so I have nothing to worry about then," I replied happily.  I mean, on TV werewolves, like, ATE people.

"Uh, yeah, I guess," Liam confirmed confusedly as another thought popped into my head.

"Hey," I started, and all eyes were locked on me, even Niall who was halfway to the kitchen and immediately scooted back to his place on the floor, "um, not to be rude or anything, but could you maybe show me? The whole, like, shifting thing?" Surely they would say no, I knew it.  Liam looked at Louis for approval, but it was a look of worry and apprehension.  I always seemed to forget that Louis was in charge.  Maybe they had shown someone before and hunters nearly found them.

Louis and Liam's staring match continued until Louis suddenly broke away. "Ummm, o-okay, but we'll have to go pretty far into the woods, if that's alright with you Sam,"

"Okay!" I bounced up, "I'll just go get more appropriate shoes!" I pointed to my toes and twirled to run out the door.  Minutes later I returned with neon pink wellington boots on my feet which were much less comfortable than my UGGs.  I don't know why I even had wellies since it never rained here.

"Okay, let's go!" I jumped up and down excitedly and the boys followed me out.
