8. Chapter 7

     "Hunter and I were paired up in school, he is coming over to study tonight"  I mumbled at dinner that night.

    "Speak up Courtney!  You know that I hate mumbling!"

    "I HAVE TO WORK WITH HUNTER BECAUSE WE GOT PAIRED UP WITH EACH OTHER! HE'S COMING OVER TONIGHT!  THIS LOUD ENOUGH FOR YA?!?!"  I yelled.  Both of their expressions changed and they started to say sorry but I stood up from my seat, grabbed my plate and went up the stairs.  I went to lay on my bed but Jack had given me a hard beating during lunch and I found it hard to lay down without hurting myself.  I contented myself with laying on my back propped up by a pillow.  I ate my meal for a while and thought about what I would say to Hunter.  I hated that I had agreed to this.  Is was so freaking stupid!  I didn't want to see him or talk to him or have a single thing to do with him!  I heard a knock on the door.  Knowing that it would be Hunter I grabbed my books, a notebook, and a pencil.  I heard Ronnie open the door and invite Hunter in.  She gave him a snack to bring up and he accepted it, thanking her before heading up the stairs.  I popped in some ear buds and stayed there, pretending to read until Hunter entered my room.

    He walked in awkwardly, remembering the last time he was in here and hating the thought.   I popped out an ear bud as he sat on the bed and forced a smile.

    "Hey, I found some cool websites and a couple books that were laying around my house.  I brought them for you to look at. Are you ready to get started?" Hunter asked.

     "Sure, whatever.  I just wanna get this over with" I mumbled.  He looked down then stood up.

    "You know what, you're right.  This was a bad idea and I shouldn't have mentioned it.  I thought maybe you would realize that I would never do such a thing to you.  Don't start yelling, please.  I'll just go and you can sit here believing your own lies"  Hunter started to walk towards the door.

     "My own lies?" I said, standing up.  "Who says that they're lies?  I have known you for less than a week and you think that I should trust you completely?  Well if you think that I am that weak and vulnerable than walk away like the shame-filled person you should be"  I sat back down and waited for his response.  He stood in the doorway, not moving.  Finally he turned around to face me.

     "You are very strong Courtney, I would never think that you are weak.  I-I-I know that we haven't know each other for very long, not long at all, but I thought you knew me well enough to know that I'm not that evil"  He came over and grabbed my hand and gave it a quick peck before I could pull it away.

      "I am sorry for trying to push you to believe something that I really don't have proof for.  If I was in your shoes I would probably think the same thing"  Woah.  His sweet, kind, gentle words had surprised me.

    "Well, lets just study and eat the delicious brownies Ronnie sent up with you" I said motioning to the plate of steaming hot brownies.   Hunter's face lit up in a smile and his eyes were shining.

    "Okay"

    We had just finished the pan of brownies and were getting ready for Hunter to leave after a couple hours of studying.  It had all been awkward and I was relieved that it was over.   Hunter was just grabbing his bag full of books when there was a loud bang downstairs.

    "Ahhhhh!!!!!"  Ronnie let out a loud high pitched scream paralyzing me.

    "No!!  NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" She yelled even louder.  Hunter and I both looked at each other before running towards my door.

    "LET GO OF ME!!!" Ronnie screamed, "WHATS WRONG WITH MY HUSBAND?!  WHY ISN'T HE STANDING BACK UP OR OPENING HIS EYES?!?!  WHAT DID YOU EVIL MEN DO?!?!"  I was on the stairs, my heart beating out of my chest when I saw them and they saw me.  5 men were wearing all black and ski masks.  A picture of a broken heart was on their chest.

    "There she is is!!!"  one of the men bellowed in a gravely voice.  I saw Ronnie being tied up and gagged.  I ran towards her, dodging the men.

     "LET HER GO!"  I screamed at the top of my lungs.

     "HEY?  WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!  Hunter yelled after punching one guys face.  The two started a fist fight.  Ronnie gave me a look of despair an instant before a man knocked her out with a hit on the head.  I screamed and slapped the man's face.

      "Get over here you mutt!" A man who looked as if he worked out like all day shouted and lunged at me.  I wasn't able to move in time.  The man caught me and started wrapping me up in ropes so tight that they seemed to cut into my skin.

    "COURTNEY!!!  NO!  LET HER GO!!!"  Hunter shouted and gave the man he was fighting another good punch before running towards me.

    "It'll be ok" he whispered in my ear as he tried to knock out the big man behind me.

     "Get off" The man growled and batted Hunter away.  With one swipe he sent Hunter flying across the room, landing on his side.

    "HUNTER!!!!"  I screamed, trying to struggle.  I wanted to get away from these horrid men, what did they want?!  A gag was placed in front of my face.  I jerked my head backwards, hitting the man in the head and stunning him.  I tried to stand up but another man grabbed me and forced the fowl gag into my mouth.  He grabbed my waist and slung me over his shoulder before yelling out,

    "We got what we came for!  Let's go!"   I tried to scream, I tried to wiggle out, I even tried to chew at the gag, but it all failed.   Now is when I saw it.  Reagan's body was sprawled across the floor and blood had started to drip out of his mouth.  His face was pale and I knew that he was dead.

    "RONNIE!!!!!  HUNTER!!!!!!!!!!"  I tried to scream the words but it came put as just a moan.  Hunter finally opened his eyes and looked at me.  Once he realized what was happening he got up, wincing, and ran towards me.

    "I will get to you!!  I will find you!!!  I promise you Courtney!!!!!!"  He kissed me on the head as I was taken out the door.  He was pushed back in the house by the men.  I was thrown into the back of a van.  It smelled horrible and it was pitch black.  I looked back out the back of the van and I saw Hunter standing there, trying to pass two of the men.  That was the last thing I saw, Hunter trying to get to me, to save me, before someone knocked me out and then it all turned black.

HUNTER'S P.O.V.

      I attempted to push through the two men in front of me.  I shouted Courtney's name as they closed the back of their van.  I started to punch the men but the one who had tied Ronnie up flung me over her shoulder and then threw me back into the yard.  Pain shot up my back and I let out a gasp.  These men were taking Courtney, MY COURTNEY!!  Sure, at the moment she hated me but now I was her only hope.  I tried to stand up but another man stomped on my chest.  How long do these guys work out every day? I wondered to myself.

    "Where are you taking her?!"  I yelled as the men walked away.  I tried to stand up and stumbled, falling on the ground again.  I picked myself up with a new thought in mind, Courtney's face, her laughter, her feelings that had been robbed from her.  I stood up and jumped into my car just as the black van had drove down the street leading into town.  I revved the engine and stepped on the pedal.  Speed limits didn't matter, neither did the fact that my parents didn't have a freaking idea where I was gonna be tonight.  I intended to get Courtney back no matter the consequences.

                                                                                                         ~~~~
     Ok so what if I had three police cars at my back, I still had the van in sight.  I had called the police a few hours earlier telling them about the break in, but all they seemed to care about was that I and these lunatics ahead of me, re speeding.  I swerved around a corner, barely missing a couple of kids.  Guilt caught hold of me.  I hadn't been able to save Courtney and now I remembered Ronnie.  I picked up my phone and pressed my parents, who were on speed dial.
     "Dad?"
     "Hunter!!  Where the heck are you?!"
    "I'm chasing down a car that contains men who broke in and took Courtney.  Listen, Ronnie is at their house tied up, I need you to get to their house and untie her.  Bring her to the hospital, do whatever you need to do, but make sure she's OK.  Oh, and Reagan was shot, check him out too"
    "What kind of crap are you talking Hunter?!  Did that Coolman get you drinking?"   I was exhausted and this was the last straw before I just broke.
    "NO!!  DAD!!  YOU MAY NOT CARE ABOUT ME BUT YOU GOTTA HELP RONNIE!!  COURTNEY MEANS THE WORLD TO ME AND IF YOU HAVE A HEART AT ALL YOU'LL GO TO 17322 KALE AVENUE AND HELP THEM!!!!  LISTEN TO ME!  TAKE ME SERIOUSLY FOR ONE SECOND IN YOUR LIFE!  I NEED TO RESCUE COURTNEY AND IF YOU DON'T DO THIS FOR ME SHE WILL COME BACK TO TWO DEAD FOSTER PARENTS!!"
    "YOU WILL NOT SPEAK TO ME LIKE THAT!! I AM YOUR FATHER!!!"  He screamed back at me in the phone.
    "MUCH OF A FATHER YOU ARE!!!!!!!  YOU ONLY CARE ABOUT MONEY!!  YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT MOTHER OR ME!  YOU WILL GO TO THAT HOUSE AND SAVE A LIFE OR I WILL NEVER IN MY LIFE COME BACK TO YOU OR THAT GOD FORSAKEN HOUSE!!  I DON'T WANT YOUR MONEY I WANT A LIFE AND DAD WHO LOVES AND CARES ABOUT ME AND A MOTHER WHO IS AN ACTUAL MOTHER AND DOESN'T JUST CARE ABOUT HER FREAKING PARTIES!!! LEAVE NOW!!"
    I hung up.  I didn't need their help if they were just gonna treat me like crap.  I turned another sharp corner and almost ran into a wall.  Gosh, they were dying for my to get off their trail!  I wiped a tear from my eye and focused on Courtney.  Who knew that a girl could actually be that special.
     Without warning a man stood out of their top window and started shooting bullets at my car.  I ducked as I heard the cracking and shattering of glass all around me.  The police's sirens were loud in my ears and for a second everything seemed to go by in slow motion.  Another bullet was shot, the sound echoing in my mind.  Shards of glass flew askew.  The Police started shooting their guns back at them.  BOOM BANG SHHHH.  The sound of bullets flying through the air and glass breaking filled the air.   My car was wrecked and I knew it wouldn't take me any farther if the driving was gonna be as rough as it had been.
    I hopped out of the car and ran through the tumult and chaos.  The van had stopped as another car drove up to it's side.  In a blur I saw the men quickly carry Courtney's limp body to the new car, enraging me even more.  The police had gotten out of their cars, stupidly leaving the keys still in the ignition.  I knew it was wrong but I had no choice.  I jumped into the car and pushed the pedal right as the car in front of me did the same.  I turned off the siren and picked up a gun that was laying on the seat next to me.  I heard the police yelling at me, but I didn't give a darn.  If I was to be a criminal so be it.  I wasn't gonna let Courtney go.  The strange men had stopped shooting and soon the police were far behind me.  This was not how I pictured spending a study night.   I found a total of 13 guns stored up in my stolen car.  I held one in my hand, placed one in my belt, and one more down in my boot.
