11. Chapter 10

I stood up quickly, eager to talk to Hunter alone about all of this.  Amanda immediately started to tear up.  Halock walked over and slapped her face and the sound of his hand hitting her already raw face sent shivers down my spine.  Hunter grabbed Gary's hand and shook it firmly before wrapping his arm around my shoulder and leading me out of the room.  Two men grabbed us and took through the echoing halls to where our cell was located.  Halock ordered for Gary and Amanda to be taken back to their previous room.  Amanda screamed and I heard her fall to the floor.  I shook free from the man's grip and ran back to the door; I needed to help her!

"Get the little brat!" Someone yelled behind me.  I was to at the door when I was grabbed from behind.  They paused long enough to let me take a look at what had happened.  Amanda lay on the ground with bloody stripes covering her back. A blood-curdling scream escaped my lips and I saw a whip in Halock's hand.  Gary jumped onto Halock's back and had wrapped his arm around his neck. A desperate call for help and Gary was pulled off his back and was being punched and gagged. I had lost my breath and went limp.  I was dragged back to Hunter and the guards.  Hunter wiggled free of the man and picked me up bridal style.  His arms was all that felt real.  I stared at his bright eyes, trying to stay sane.  I let the sound of his heart beat calm me down.

"Move!"  A voice yelled and Hunter was pushed forward.  He stumbled but didn't fall.  I was so grateful for him being there; I wouldn't have been able to move an inch.

"She needs fresh air!"  Hunter demanded and looked the man in the eye.  The guards exchanged glances.

"Check with the Boss"  One said.  The other blundered towards Halock and mumbled a question into his ear.  Halock, who was still stunned from Gary's choking attempt, threw me a look of complete disgust.

"Fine!  I can't have her going crazy yet!" He yelled with a wave of his hand. "Take them to that pasture"

    "Yes sir"

A warm breeze ruffled my hair and I took a deep breath.  We had been blindfolded and taken into an elevator.  After being hauled into a truck, they had let us off here, a small pond.  I looked around. The sun was setting and it was chilly, but after being in the stuffy underground rooms it felt refreshing.

"Are you OK?"  Hunter wrapped his arms around me.  I placed my head on his chest and let my arms around him, almost forgetting that guards were watching us.

"No, this is too weird....too crazy" I said, on the verge of tears.

"I know you won't like me asking this question but have you felt anything since you saw your parents?" He muttered, quiet enough that only I heard it.

    "No" I retorted frankly.

     "Then why'd you scream?"

"Reflexes I guess.  I still cry, but I don't feel the sadness"   I was starting to turn to puddy in his hands.  His muscular arms wrapped around me and mine around his abs...stupid teenage hormones.

"I'll always be there for you, no matter what happens.  You know that right?" He whispered in my ear.  It was a miracle that I didn't fall to my knees right then.  I lifted my head off of his chest and looked up at him.  He moved his eyes from the horizon to meet mine.

"Yes, I do" I whispered.  I don't know why but I gave him a little smile before planting a kiss on his cheek.  I knew that if I had feelings that I would be falling hard for this boy.  Hunter let out a small gasp but didn't loosen his grip on my waist.  I felt his heart beat a bit faster and my mind flashed back to that night at his house......

"Courtney, you look.....breathtaking!" Hunter said as we followed the others into the dining room.  I blushed, but his comment made me feel beautiful. Although suddenly I was aware of the amount of leg and cleavage I had showing.  Sadly, I couldn't feel the happiness that should have been flowing thought me.  That hadn't changed, I still had no emotion.

"You don't look too bad yourself, Lapet" I said, "And your house is...amazing, you live in a palace!"

"Hm, it's a palace if your my princess for tonight, deal?" He gave me a smile, showing off his dimples.

"Well, your highness, that might just work out for tonight!"  I gave his hand a squeeze.

"You're allowed to move around you know!"   A guard announced and then the three who had accompanied us sat down in the grass and took out a cooler.  They started chuckling and retrieved some beer.  Hunter still hadn't said anything and I felt as if I had done something wrong.

"W-wanna go for a little stroll Princess?"  Hunter stuttered and let his arms fall to his sides.  His cheeks had more color than usual, but there was a glint in his eyes that you couldn't miss.

"Sure, why not?"  Princess, yes that doesn't sound too bad, does it?   I thought to myself.  I pulled away from him and looked around.  he tried to hide it, but I noticed Hunter's eyes scanning my face every few seconds.

"Who do you think is a faster runner?  Me or You?" I asked.

"Well, I don't know. Why?"  He gave me a questioning look.

"I'm about to find out" I giggled and realization shot across Hunter's face as I bolted away.  I ran towards a small clump of trees, laughing all the way.

"Hey!  You got a head start!' He yelled and started to chase me.

"So long sucker!" I yelled over my shoulder.  I didn't let myself look back; for I knew that he must be on my tail.

"Oh!!  You're in trouble young lady!  I'll catch you if it's the last thing I do!" This time his voice was nearer and I forced myself to run faster.  The wind was hitting my face and I felt worlds away.  When I thought I couldn't go any faster I felt a hand graze my shoulder.  I shrieked, making Hunter laugh.  Neither of us stopped running.  Then I felt fingers wrap around my stomach and shrieked again.

"Ok! You got me!" I giggled uncontrollably.

"Payback time!"  Hunter announced and he started tickling my stomach and my breath left me instantly.  laughter erupted from both of us and I was on the ground in seconds.

"STOOOOOPP!!!!!!!!  HUNTER!!!!!!!!"  I called out between spasms of laughter and screams.

"Hmmmm should I stop" He mused and for a second he stopped tickling me.

"Yes?" I offered him meekly.  he propped himself up on one elbow and stared down at me. A smile had lit up his face and I hadn't noticed till then how much I had missed his dimples.  I was flat on my back in the grass, out of breath.  The guards were specks and even Hunter's breathing was harder than usual.

"Hmmmm maybe......ah who am I kidding, no way!" His fingers that now knew my weak spots went back to my stomach and I let out another burst of laughter.  I felt like a child, rolling on the ground laughing and smiling.

"Ok, Ok, I'm done"  Hunter laughed and collapsed on the ground.  By now the sun was dying everything around it pink and orange.  I sat up and pulled my knees into my chest.

"It's beautiful" I breathed, staring at the array of colors.  Hunter propped himself up and gazed at it.

"Yes, it is pretty....." He trailed off and his eyes moved to the ground.  I kept looking at the sun, watching it's slow descent.  "But it's nothing compared to you" Hunter blurted out suddenly.  My cheeks went pink and my eyes went to the ground also.  I felt his eyes on me, but I didn't look up.

"Courtney?" He muttered and scooted towards me.

"Do you think that if you had...if you could..." He trailed off awkwardly.

"If I could feel" I prompted him and let my eyes rest on his face.  He ran his fingers through his hair and went on.

"Ya, that, then do you think you would...that you and me..." Again he seemed to lose words for what he wanted to say, but I knew the question even when he couldn't put into words.

"Yes, Hunter" I whispered and he looked at me, smiling.  Those green eyes seemed to hypnotize me and we both started to lean in slowly.  My heart beat fast and butterflies fluttered and wrapped my stomach into knots.  Our faces were centimeters apart, one more move and the space between us would be filled.  We didn't move, I barely breathed.  We were torn apart by a fierce movement and I fell back onto my back.  We looked up to see one of the guards, drunk but still stern and demanding, staring down at us.

"We are leaving, get up!" He yelled and kicked Hunter.  We stood up and exchanged an awkward glance.  I wondered if they would ever let us come out here again, I really hoped so.  when we got back we were thrown into the cell and locked in.  I looked at Hunter and found that he had already been staring at me.  I wasn't sure what exactly had happened, but maybe Hunter did care about me.
