18. Chapter 17

Around three, we finished baking cookies, cakes, brownies, cupcakes, and cheesecake. We were defiantly a busy group of teenagers. After a few food fights and a lot of cleaning up, we finally brought the stuff out to Maura. After we brought it out, she told us to clean up and to go get ready. Harry and Niall had gone back right away but I had hung back for a couple minutes.

“Is there something you need?” Maura asked as she started arranging food on the tables.

“What exactly do I wear to a block party…?” I asked slowly.

“A sundress and sandals would look nice.” Maura said, clearly distracted.

“Okay, thank you.” I walked back to the house and walked into the open bathroom. I took a quick shower and went back to my room. I ended up picking out a cream colored, high-low, floral dress with red flowers on it. I smiled at myself and slipped on white wedges and put on some makeup. My black hair dried itself in slight curls so I took a brown headband and places it across my forehead. I applied some lip gloss and decided to paint my nails red. Afterwards, I took one last look in the mirror and sighed. “This is as good as it’s going to get…” I said to myself.

“BETHANY, HARRY AND I ARE LEAVING! SEE YOU AT THE BLOCK PARTY!” Niall called.

“OKAY!” I called back. I looked back at the mirror and smiled. I didn’t look half bad. I opened the door and wandered outside. People were everywhere- children were running around playing Frisbee, baseball; adults were talking and drinking; and the teenagers were hanging out by the food tables or in groups. I felt awkward and out of place, not exactly sure what to do.

“Bethany, you look beautiful.” I turned around and saw Liam standing there.

“Hey, I didn’t know you lived around here; and thank you.”

“Yeah, right up the street; and no problem.” I smiled and looked around. “You’ve never been to one of these before?” I shook my head.

“No…I don’t even know these people.”

“Yeah you do…you just don’t remember them because of how little you were. As soon as you start mingling you’ll remember everyone…or most everyone.” I giggled and continued to look around. My eyes landed on Harry, who looked…perfect. He had on skinny blue jean and a white dress shirt on. His curly hair looked perfect and he was smiling and laughing, making him look more attractive than usual.

“Bethany, you look darlin’!” I turned around and Maura was standing there.

“Thank you.” I said, blushing.

“Oh just wait until Niall lays eyes on you!” I began to blush even more. “NIALL, HARRY, COME OVER HERE AND BRING BETHANY TO RE-INTRODUCE HER TO EVERYONE!” Harry and Niall made their way over to me and as soon as they saw me, their mouths dropped.

“Wow…” The both whispered.

“You look…”

“Beautiful.” Harry finished for Niall. I blushed even more and looked down.

“Thank you.”

“So, shall we go meet everyone else?” Harry asked, offering me his arm. I smiled and nodded, taking his arm.

“Yeah…sure.” I whispered as Harry whisked me away.

Harry:

My whole body was tingling just from her touch. I tried to shake the feeling off but it wouldn’t go away no matter how hard I tried. I glanced back at her again and couldn’t help but smile. She looked absolutely beautiful. There was no other way to describe her. She looked like she tried, but didn’t try too hard which was a hell of a lot more attractive than what most girls here were wearing.

“Bethany, you remember April and Sammy, right?” Niall asked.

“Vaguely; nice to see you again.” She whispered.

“Wow, look how you’ve grown! You look so much better!” Sammy said. Bethany blushed and looked down. It was kind of cute how nervous she got around people she didn’t know.

“I guess I’ll take that as a compliment.”

“It was, love- trust me, and it was.” Bethany laughed quietly.

“Alright- onto more people.” Niall joked, making us all laugh. For the next half hour, we re-introduced Bethany to everyone on the block. For the most part, she remembered most people after a bit, it just took a little reminding of names.

“Do you want something to drink?” I whispered to her. She nodded and I led her over to the drinks table. I handed her a soda and picked one up myself. “Do you want to go sit somewhere quieter? It isn’t exactly calm over here.” She laughed and smiled.

“Yeah, I’m sort of getting a headache.” She said with a shrug. I smiled and grabbed her hand. She looked surprised but quickly intertwined her fingers with mine as I led her away.

Niall:

I watched from a distance as I watched Harry flirt with Bethany, and her going with it. I felt a little jealous, only because when we were younger, we both liked each other and now she’s going for Harry. I didn’t think things would change when she came back. I sort of wished it was me leading her off to somewhere more private, not Harry. I shook off the feeling, knowing there was no way I was going to allow Harry and Bethany ruin our friendship.

“Where are Bethany and Harry?” Liam asked, walking up to me.

“They went off somewhere together.” I said with a shrug. Liam nodded and then brought me over to where there was a baseball game going on and added us into the game; which was a good thing so I would be able to keep my mind off Bethany and Harry.

Bethany:

Harry led me to a grassy hill further away from the block party which was kind of nice. I was getting a headache from all the people anyway.

“So how have you been?” Harry asked, breaking the silence.

“I’ve been better.”

“How so?” I was quiet, not sure how to respond so I just shrugged.

“I just have been. How about you; how have you been?”

“Same as you- I’ve been better.”

“Are you going to tell me how you’ve been better?” Harry shook his head and smirked at me.

“If you aren’t, I’m not.” I smiled and shook my head.

“Fair enough.” I said as I lay back so I could stare at the sky that was now turning purple, pink, and orange. “The sky looks beautiful.” I whispered. Harry lay down next to me and looked up at the sky too.

“It really is beautiful. I used to watch the sunset every night until stuff changed.”

“What kind of stuff?”

“Nothing of your concern.”

“Alright sassy pants.” Harry laughed quietly at my joke before going quiet again. “So, how long do these things normally last?” I looked over at Harry, waiting for an answer.

“Not until around midnight…sometimes one or two in the morning. No one is really in a rush to go home because we all live right in this area.”

“That makes sense. What do you do the whole time?”

“Each week there is a different sport, so depending on the sport, I’ll play that, I’ll hang out with friends, or I’ll just hang out over here by myself.”

“Why alone?”

“Because you and I used to do it when we were kids; when we didn’t hate each other. Those were some of the best night’s I’ve ever had.” Harry whispered. I blushed and looked over at Harry. His arms were behind his head and he was looking up at the sky.

“I don’t really recall that.”

“I wouldn’t expect you to; it only happened once.”

“Why only once?” I asked curiously.

“Because I kissed you, you got mad at me, and left.” I giggled, trying to remember.

“That’s funny because we hated each other.”

“You hated me…I liked you- I had the biggest crush on you when we were kids.” I blushed and rolled over on my side so my chest was against his one side.

“Do you still have this crush on me?” I whispered. Harry looked over at me and nodded.

“Yeah…I do.” Harry reached over and pushed a piece of hair away from my face. He rested his hand on my neck and leaned in. “Tell me if you want me to stop…” Harry whispered as his face came closer to mine. I was getting nervous waiting for the kiss. It had been a long time since I had been kissed. My eyes started to close and after what seemed like forever, out lips finally met.

Our lips connected like they were meant to be together. It just felt so right. Harry rolled over so he was on top of me; his body pressed to mine so I had some of his body weight on me, but I didn’t mind. I wrapped my arms around his neck and he placed his hands on either side of my head to support himself so he wasn’t fully putting his pressure on me.

After a few more kisses, he pulled away and rolled back over onto his side. I curled into his side and he held me close to him. I closed my eyes and inhaled his perfect smell, savoring every moment I had in his arms.

“What’s going to happen tomorrow?”

“I guess we’ll find out…” Harry said after a long pause. I tensed up at the thought of him just forgetting this moment but…there was nothing I could do- I wasn’t supposed to like him.
