C'est La Vie

HIM: Niall James Horan. Irish. Boyband member. My best friend. The guy I am hopelessly in love with. All rolled up into one.
ME: Maxime Adelina Mercer. American, but of French descent (cue to my name, in case you couldn’t tell). Personal trainer/physical therapist for previously mentioned boyband. Eternally friendzoned.

Will Niall ever see me as more than just a friend? Or is this just the life I'm destined to live? Being friendzoned by the boy who means more than the world to me.

11. Let's Get Complicated

I waved a final goodbye to Max as I exited the gym, my smile disappearing the second I had my back turned to her.

I cannot believe I lied to her. Actually, I can. I lied to her because I'm a selfish douchebag and I don't want her to date Niall. What I really cannot believe though is that she believed all that bullshit I told her about him. Of course he has real feelings for her, he hasn't shut up about her the past few days.

It's just not fair though! Niall has had months - months! - to make a move on Max, and he hasn't. I, on the other hand, am not nearly as close to her and she hated me! So I couldn't make a move. Now that I can though, I'm smart enough to take advantage of it and I'll be damned if Niall Horan stands in the way, best friend or not.

After Max had told me she wanted me to help her 'teach Niall a lesson', we'd actually had a fairly productive workout session. I could hardly take my eyes off of her though, not to mention my mind was reeling with her proposition. When I fed her that bullshit about Niall's 'intentions', I just expected her to be mad at him. I didn't expect her to decide to use me to get back at him.

But hey, I'm not complaining, she can kiss me anytime she wants.

Max had told me she wanted the two of us to act all flirty and stuff in front of Niall for a few days so that he would get a taste of how it feels to have your emotions messed with. I feel guilty, it's going to tear him apart.

All is fair in love and war though, I suppose.

As I bit my lip in concentration walking through the lobby in the hotel, I almost ran into Louis and Zayn who were getting breakfast.

"Oh hey, you just get done with Max?" Louis asked when he saw me.

It took me a second to respond, I swallowed and shook my head to focus.

"Uh, yeah, just finished up." I said with a nod, trying to walk around them and towards the elevators.

"Woah wait up," Louis said, grabbing my shoulder and pulling me back, "Do you know what happened with her and Niall?"

"Yeah he came through earlier all happy and bouncy and stuff, I figured they finally talked." Zayn added, "Did Max say anything?"

I blanched. Of course Niall was all happy, he thought that he and Max were going to make up and who knows what else. Because when he left her, that's what she thought too. Now though, thanks to yours truly, she's pissed at him and thinks that he's messing with her feelings when actually he's being totally genuine.

God I'm such an asshole.

So what now? Do I go back to Max and tell her the truth? Hell no, she'll murder me.

"Harry?" Louis asked, shaking my shoulder. I looked back up at him and blinked a few times. "You alright there mate, you kind of spaced out?"

"Uh, yeah." I said, rubbing my temple. "I'm just worn out from the session with Max. But uh, no she didn't say anything about Niall. Well I gotta go shower, I'll see you boys later."

"Harry wait--"

I didn't hear what Zayn had to say as I walked off and into the elevators, punching the close doors button.

I leaned back against the walls of the empty elevator and put my hands behind my head, sighing.

What have I gotten myself into?

I finished touching up my light makeup and stepped back to look in the mirror.

Damn, I always surprise myself when I put effort into my appearance. If I wasn't so freaking lazy I could look like this all the time.

Eh, lazy is more fun.

My blonde hair was straightened and reached all the way down to the middle of my back. My makeup was light, just enough to cover the bags under my eyes and make my eyelashes look longer. I was wearing jean shorts and a 3/4 sleeve pink plaid shirt, tucked in on one side and loose on the other. That and some long silver necklaces, and I was looking pretty fit.

I was just adding some powder to my nose when I heard knocking at my hotel room door. It had to be Harry, I told him he was going to walk me down to the crew meeting.

"Come in, I propped it open for a reason!" I shouted from the bathroom.

I heard Harry's familiar deep laugh. "Y'know they give you those fancy key cards so that you can leave the door closed and creepers won't come in." He said from the other room.

I smiled into the mirror. "Yeah but I like creepers, especially curly headed ones!" I shouted back.

He laughed pretty hard at that one, and I heard him walk towards the bathroom where I had the door closed.

"Hey Max, I need to talk to you about something." He said slowly.

"Sure I'll be out in one second, what is it?"

"Erm, well it's about Niall...I actually have to admit that--"

Harry cut himself off as I swung the door open and looked up at him, expecting him to continue. He, on the other hand, was speechless, looking me up and down. I smirked.

"Cat got your tongue?" I teased.

Harry snapped his eyes back up to my face and I laughed as his cheeks turned bright red.

"I'm teasing, what were you saying about Niall?" I asked.

Harry opened his mouth to speak but no words came out. I cocked my eyebrow at him. Had he become a mute in the last three seconds?

"Spit it out Harry." I said.

Harry dipped his head and sighed. "Nothing, it's nothing. He's just gonna feel like an idiot for screwing with you, Frenchie."

I scoffed, smacking him with the back of my hand, to which he winced.

"Ow! What was that for?" He asked incredulously.

"We're finally getting along, don't fuck it up by calling me that ridiculous name." I said with narrowed eyes.

Harry laughed as I walked around him and grabbed my sandals, slipping them on.

"Oh quit laughing, let's go, we're already late!" I said, getting behind Harry and pushing him out of the room.

Once we made our way downstairs, Harry and I headed to the conference room where the entire crew was meeting. We could hear all the voices inside and figured the meeting hadn't actually started yet, they never did on time.

I stopped and turned to Harry, who looked down at me skeptically.

"You ready to teach Niall what happens when you fuck with Maxime Mercer?" I said with an attitude, anger lacing my voice.

Harry tensed up, hesitating before relaxing and putting his arm around my shoulder, tugging me closer to him.

"Let's just get in there." He said quietly with a weak smile.

Before I could question him, Harry used his free arm to push open the doors of the conference room.

The whole crew was in the room, and I glanced around quickly, seeing familiar members of security, hair and makeup, sound tech, the band, etc. Everyone was just walking around and eating some of the food that had been set out, talking and laughing.

I smiled and waved as I caught Josh's eye, him looking at me skeptically.

"Hey let's go talk to Josh." I said, tugging on a nervous looking Harry.

We walked over to where Josh, Sandy, and Dan were all sitting, Harry's arm still thrown over my shoulder and mine around his waist. It didn't look romantic, but it looked very friendly to everyone else.

"Hey Josh!" I said, stepping away from Harry and moving to hug Josh. He stood up from his chair and hugged me back.

"Hey Max," He said slowly, "And...Harry." He added with skepticism.

I rolled my eyes and pulled away, hugging Dan and Sandy as well. I trained with the three of them whenever I had free time, and we were all pretty close.

"Since when are you two all buddy-buddy?" Sandy asked after he kissed me on the cheek in greeting.

"Yeah I thought you two hated each other." Dan said nonchalantly, sipping on a drink.

I scoffed fake disbelief. "Dan! I've never in my life said an ill word against Harry!" I said teasingly, turning and winking at Harry, who rolled his eyes.

"Yeah and I'm the Queen of England." Louis' voice rang out, walking up to our little group. I turned to him and smiled, moving back over to Harry.

"Well with the way you act, you might as well be." I teased back, making everyone laugh.

Louis held up his hands and laughed along with me.

"So uh, anyone wanna explain this?" Louis asked, gesturing between me and Harry, who now had his hand around my waist and resting on my hip. "And why a certain Irishman looks ready to kill?"

At the mention of Niall, I glanced over Louis' shoulder and saw Niall sitting with Liam, Zayn, and Luke and Calum from their opening act, 5 Seconds of Summer, all sitting together. Louis was right, Niall had his eyes trained on Harry's hand, and looked like he was majorly pissed.

I sighed and looked back up at Louis. "Explain what?" I asked with a rather bitchy tone, taking everyone by surprise. "Explain that Harry and I are friends now, and I can do whatever the hell I want, whether it pisses Niall off or not?"

Louis looked rather taken aback at my words, and for a split second I felt bad for speaking to him in that tone.

Just for a second though.

"What the hell Max? Niall was all happy after your workout session today, said you two were 'stronger than ever'," Louis used air quotes to make his point, "And now you show up here all touchy feely with Harry when you know how it makes him feel?"

I scoffed, rolling my eyes and ignoring the fact that Harry was so tense beside me, staying completely silent.

"Oh fuck that Louis, why should I care how my actions make him feel when he sure as hell doesn't take my feelings into account anymore?"

Louis looked at me in utter disbelief. "What?! All Niall ever does is think about how you feel! Who the fuck told you he doesn't care about your feelings?"

"Louis I need to talk to you." Harry suddenly said, stepping away from me and grabbing Louis' forearm, dragging him away from our group.

What the hell?

I stood there and watched as Harry drug a very surprised looking Louis away. What was so damn important that Harry had to interrupt my argument?

I turned and looked at Josh, Sandy, and Dan, who looked just as confused as me.

"Do any of you know what just happened?" I asked. They all shook their heads. I rolled my eyes and turned back to the room.

And oh look, here comes my least favorite person on the planet right now, stalking towards me and away from his group.

I rolled my eyes and took a seat on the couch next to Sandy as Niall made his way over.

"Ooo, somebody's about to get in trouble." Sandy sing-songed next to me, nudging my shoulder with his own.

"Oh fuck off." I bit back, making them all laugh. "I can handle my own with him, you all know that."

I looked back up as Niall approached us and oh damn did he look fine as hell when he was mad. His eyes were all dark, and his broad shoulders were visibly tense underneath his white tshirt, his hands shoved into his jeans pockets. His hair was down but messy, as if he'd been running his fingers through it.

I leaned back on the couch, crossing my legs and arms and looking at him with an attitude.

Niall walked right up to me, staring down at me intensely. God he looked mad. And so...hot.

Wow I'm horny.

"Get up." Niall said, looking over the top of my head.

I scoffed. "Excuse me?" I asked with an attitude. Who the fuck did he think he was talking to?

"I said get up, we're going to talk." He hissed, looking down at me.

I laughed. "Well go on, talk. We don't have to go anywhere."

Niall looked at Sandy, Dan, and Josh, who looked incredibly uncomfortable.

"Nuh-uh," I said, "Whatever you have to say to me, you can say in front of them."

"Actually uh, I think I heard Zayn saying my name just now and-- What's that? Oh yeah sure be right there!" Josh faked, jumping up and walking off, pointing and laughing at me in the process.

"Fuck you Josh!" I shouted, leaning around Niall. Josh just turned around and flipped me off with a wink.

"Um, I think we're gonna head over with Josh too." Dan muttered, standing up and walking away.

"And then there was two." Sandy muttered, patting my knee friendly-like before standing up and leaving as well.

I huffed in frustration.

"Pussies!" I yelled after them, not caring who heard me. I rolled my eyes and leaned back on the couch again. I risked a glance back up at Niall and saw that he was looking at me in amusement now. "Oh fuck you Niall, quit smirking." I snapped.

His smirk quickly faded, replaced again with anger.

"What the fuck Max?" He asked, sitting down beside me, to which I turned away from him. "Hey, come on, look at me."

When I didn't, Niall just sighed and grabbed my chin, turning my face towards his. I was expecting to see his angry face still put on, but instead I saw something else.

I saw hurt.

My posture instantly softened and I moved closer to him like I always do. I hate seeing hurt Niall, it's my least favorite Niall.

"What happened between this morning and now?" He asked softly, putting his hand on my knee, to which sparks flew out across my body. "And why are you and Harry all over each other?" He added, disgust lacing his voice.

I tensed back up at his words, shoving his hand off of my knee.

"Don't screw around with me and act clueless Niall, you know exactly what's going on." I hissed under my breath. "And I don't care who you are, nobody fucks with my emotions."

Niall's face screwed up in confusion. "Who's fucking with your emotions?"

I scoffed, shaking my head. "Unbelievable. You're going to choose to play dumb right now Niall? I know that you just said and did all that stuff this morning because you're trying to keep me from going after Harry."

Niall's jaw dropped. "What gave you that idea?" He asked incredulously. "I said and did all that this morning because I have feelings for you, you idiot. Not because I'm trying to keep you from anyone."

I froze.

Did he just...

Yep. He did.

"Wait." I said slowly, looking at Niall's face for any sign that he was lying, to which I didn't find. "Then why did Harry say that--"

"Harry?" Niall interrupted incredulously. "Harry is the one that told you--"

"No Louis, you don't understand!" Harry's voice boomed out across the room, speak of the devil.

Everyone's heads turned to look at where Harry and Louis were talking in a corner. Well, more like shouting at this point. Neither seemed to care though that almost all eyes were on them.

"No, I understand that you're going to mess up two good friendships if you keep acting like this!" Louis shouted back.

"I'm going to go see what's going on." I mumbled to Niall, standing up and walking away from him and towards Harry and Louis.

It wasn't like them to fight like this, they never shouted at each other. I couldn't let them get into a major fight, especially if it was about what Louis and I were discussing earlier.

"No, I'll be messing up if I let this chance go!" Harry yelled, stepping right up to Louis' face.

I sped up my walk towards them, I'll be damned if this got any more out of hand.

Louis shoved Harry away from him, making me cringe. But Harry didn't retaliate.

"You don't get it Harry, there is no chance. You and Max are nothing more than friends! It's her and Niall and that's all it's ever going to be!"

"Yeah well I'm in love with her so excuse me if I have a little bit of trouble accepting that!"

My surprised voice interrupted their argument, me being just five steps away from Harry.

They both snapped their heads up to look at me, and Harry instantly paled. Louis began to say something, but just dropped his head, looking guilty.

"Did you just say that you had feelings for me?" I managed to squeak out.

"Max, I--" Harry began to say, stepping towards me.

I didn't give him a chance to finish though, as I turned and fled the room as fast as I could.
