3. Only Getting Richer

Shawn has another basketball game tonight, which I am forced to go to, even though the high school's current season already spells out "Defeat".

Dad drops my friend Sam and I off at 6:30 and hands me the usual ten bucks, and with it, I hear "Don't spend it all in the same place."

He means not to spend it all on candy.

I don't.

I spend it on clothes. Or sometimes a line or two of snow. Never ever to hurt me seriously, just enough to keep food cravings away. I read somewhere that cocaine suppresses appetite  so I keep some handy for days that I eat too much and Hunger fails me because I failed Hunger. The rush it just an added bonus to not feeling hungry.

Sam gets his usual nachos, two cans of pop, and three candy bars before the game starts. He doesn't even offer me anything anymore because he knows I'll say no and because that food will be lucky to make it until half time.

He's going to get so fat one day, I think to myself.

I don't see why I even come to these games except for "moral support". All I do is people watch. I find all the people who need to lose a ton of weight, who's going to get fat, and whose body I want. Usually, it's little boys, probably around age 9. You know, the ones who obviously are going to be physically fit when they're older. but for now are just walking twigs.

"You could look like that you know", Hunger whispers in my ear.

"And I will," I tell him. "You'll be proud of me then, I swear."
