1. The Last Time

- 6th March 2010 -

His hand slid in mine as I turned to face him in my seat. My hair brushed over my shoulders as I swiveled in my seat to take in the glorious smile across Heath's face,

"A girl." he whispered. I felt my heart melting all over again just looking into the green, fathomless depths of his eyes. The eyes of the man I loved.

"We finally did it." I smiled, tears welling up in my eyes as the pain of finding out I could have ovarian cancer flashed through my mind all over again. The pain so raw I felt a sick churning in my stomach, panic flashing through my veins so fast I could barely catch my breath.

"The doctor said she'll be fine Ariel, don't worry about it." his voice brought me to calm, briefly taking his hand away from mine to turn the car before pulling up outside our home. Biting my lower lip I nodded, turning to face the house as the barest waves of worry seemed to slowly hover through my veins. His hand brushed against my waist as he unbuckled my seat belt for me. Turning in my seat, I smiled gently, the final hints of pain starting to fade away. His hand gently lifted to my face, brushing my curls back over my shoulder, before he cupped my chin to gently place a kiss upon my lips. Sliding my eyes closed I allowed the bliss of his touch to take over as he showered kisses over my eyes, lips, neck, and down to my tummy. Excitement fluttered through my veins as I squeezed my eyes shut for a moment to look down, only to watch him pull away as he gently ran his hands over my some-what rounded stomach before sitting up to meet my teary eyes with his own.

"I love you Ariel," he whispered, starting to tear up. Momentarily stunned, my eyes widened. To see this emotion I'd never seen for even a moment on his face... My hands rose to his face, fingers trailing his cheeks before I cupped his jaw in my hands only to brush my thumbs beneath his eyes to gently wipe away the tears. Leaning forward, I gently kissed both his eyes before brushing my lips over his. Leaning my forehead gently against his, we seemed to breathe in sync as air drew through us before we exhaled.

"I love you more." I whispered my eyelids sliding closed, as the smallest of smiles gently curved my lips.

The jolt that sent me flying back into the seat caused me to scream as the car began to spin sidewards. My eyes flew open to meet those of Heath's as he reached for me, the car suddenly suffering another jolt before spinning in the other direction. As if in slow motion I could feel myself life from the seat, and towards the window a loud crack coming from above my left ear before it gave way to immeasurable pain as I cried out Heath's name. My inability fo focus on what was happening had be in a daze before I found myself helplessly watching as a giant, red vehicle seemed to spin out of control right for us.

"Heath! Heath...!" I screamed in panic. Scrambling to unbuckle his seat belt, he groaned leaning against the seat his eyes shut.

"Heath listen to me! Heath! Please...!" I pleaded, unbuckling his seat belt. I leaned over, and grasping his arms hauled him towards me.

"Heath!" his name didn't seem to leave my lips fast enough. My eyes shutting for a moment, only to open to see his legs smashed beneath the front of the car. Everything seemed to stop, as I looked up in horror as the rear-end of the red car came smashing into his side. My pleading scream drowned out by the clashing of metal upon metal.

Moments later I opened my teary eyes to see Heath groaning still in my arms. Panting slightly, I looked over his shoulder to see the car had smashed into his side of the car. His legs nearly completely gone beneath the crushed metal. He was stuck.

"A... Ariel...?" he murmured, barely audible over my frantic breathing as I ran a shaky hand over his brow.

"Heath, listen to me okay? I want you to stay still, open your eyes and look at me..." I told him sternly, my eyes looking down to his face. His eyes were closed.

"Heath look into my eyes, please...!" I whispered urgently. My heart fluttered as miraculously his eyes began to open slowly, filled with tears as they met mine.

"Ariel I love you..." Heath's words were a bare whisper as he eyes began to slide close.

"Heath, I love you," I cried, shaking his shoulders gently.

"Heath...!?" I could feel my heart breaking, my voice cracking as I looked down on his face.

"Heath open your eyes!" I pleaded, stroking his cheek as I shook him gently.

"Ma'am are you okay...? If you can we need you to get out of the vehicle..." a voice sounded from behind me. Glancing over my shoulder frantically, my tear-filled gaze met that of the some-what calm gaze of a man in uniform.

"Officer, officer my husband...!" my voice choked up, I was shaking. He opened up the severely dented door, allowing it to fall off in the process. Holding his hand out, he motioned for mine as he glanced over my shoulder to Heath.

"If you come now we can get a paramedic to get your husband out as quickly as possible ma'am." he said. Looking down at Heath, and then back at him I didn't know what to do. Brushing back the damp hair from Heath's forehead I kissed his lips gently,

"Heath?" I asked quickly, gently.

"Ariel..." he groaned, my heart lurched. Beating frantically as I seemed to draw nearer to him on instinct.

"I'm going to get you help Heath, you hear me? Stay here and I'm going to get you help..." the words left me in a rush before I quickly moved my legs from beneath his back, and swiveled in the seat to slowly lower him across where I'd been.

"Ariel I love you." Heath choked out. For a moment I froze, not sure I could do it. Leaning down I quickly rested my forehead against his, my tears sliding onto his forehead as I realized for the first time I was crying.

"I love you more." I whispered, before setting him down. Quickly getting out of the car, I started running towards the ambulance, turning to only glance over my shoulder to make sure Heath hadn't moved.

"I need a paramedic...!" I was calling out, constantly checking over my shoulder that Heath was okay. The officer had already gone to check on other cars. Reaching the ambulance, I pointed to the car.

"Please! My husband is in there!" I cried reaching out on the nearest uniformed person who was dressing the wound of a woman seated beside the ambulance. He didn't turn around. Turning I glanced at the car, only to see a fire start rising from the car beside it. For a moment my heart stopped, and then the panic came rushing in so fast I could barely take it all in...

"Heath!" My scream was deafened by the sound of my beating heart, as I took off running towards the car. I needed to get him out of there. Voices seemed to be calling out to me, but my soul was purely focused on saving Heath. My husband. My life. As the sudden explosion tore apart the cars, I fell to the ground my arms lifting to shield my tummy where I carried our unborn child. The fire rose as I fell, soon to be engulfed in the embrace of it's flames...
