My Brother's Best Friend

Jasmin Smith is no one special to the eyes of the public. A normal pretty barmaid at a pub, a talent for singing and a flat in London. But not too long ago, Jasmin received some horrible news. Her twin brother, her other half, James has passed on, and she is now alone.
Jasmin and James are originally from Holmes Chapel, and James's best friend was no other than Harry Styles. The two boys lost touch when Harry started getting whirled around in the famous life, but even after all the time that has passed, Harry is devastated at the news of James passing away. When he and Jasmin meet by chance, he makes it his mission to help her recover after the great loss she has suffered, and perhaps recover himself with her help. He feels it is his duty towards James to protect and shelter her, but never did he expect that those feelings should grow much stronger than that.

7. Chapter 6

"Jas! I need you back here!" Charlie called from the back of the bar.
"What is it? I have customers!" I asked.
"Get Janey to cover your tables!" He answered.
"Oi! Janey? Can you cover for me for a sec? Charlie needs me." I said to the new girl. Her ginger curls bobbed when she nodded at me and went to take an order. I walked around the bar to the back and found Charlie in his office.
"Sit down Jas." Charlie said. He sounded very serious, and I was fearing for my job.
"What's going on? Are you firing me or something?" I asked nervously.
"I'd never fire you Jas. You're like my daughter. I want to know if you've been going to classes lately."
"You know I haven't. I haven't reached that point yet Charlie."
"I just don't understand how you can bear to return to work, but not to uni?" He said.
"I can't bear it because he went there too. He was always there with me. He even took the same classes as me."
"Jas you have to get an education. I can't just let you wilt in here. Please." He begged.
"Charlie I can't. You have to understand that."
"Ok. But consider it." He said and dismissed me with a nod at the door. I went back to see Janey dropping a salt shaker.
"Need help?" I asked since things were fairly uneventful at the pub.
"No I'm good. Victor just called your order up. The one for table five." She said and bent down to pick up the shattered glass.
"Here you go. Anything else I can do for you?" I asked the customers with a big fake smile.
"No we're good." One of them said. I was completely without work, so I sat down by the bar and made myself a drink. Charlie wouldn't mind.
"So you're a day-drunk now eh?"
My head whipped around to see Harry in front of me with a stupid grin on his face and his hands in his pockets.
"Hey Haz. And no I'm not a day-drunk! Shut up." I laughed. He smiled and took a seat next to me.
"Any special occasion?"
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"I mean what are you doing here? You were here just a few days ago."
"I wanted to ask you if you would come with me and a few friends and see Lincoln tonight." He said.
"I would love to, but I can't. I have to work an extra shift tonight. It's friday, so it's a busy night, and Noah called in sick. I'm on overtime for now. I'm sorry. But thank you for the offer. Why didn't you just call?" I asked him.
"I wanted to come by anyway. Just see you." He smiled.
"Well, I think it's time for my lunchbreak. Would you like anything to eat?"
"No I'm good thanks." He said and crossed his legs at the ankles.
"Something to drink then?"
"Sure. Whatever you're having."
I got out two sodas and had Victor cook up a small sandwich for me. He was very quick, so I was back with Harry within two minutes.
"So tell me Styles. How is the famous life?"
"It's... I don't know how to explain it really... I'm still me. Now I just have a pack of people with cameras following me every now and then. Does that sound weird?" He asked and raised his eyebrows.
"No not at all. It's nice to know that you're still the same idiot I knew back in Holmes Chapel."
"Hey!" He said and dashed my arm. When our skin touched it sent an electric flash up my arm. I looked over and saw that he'd felt it too, but we both concealed it and looked down at our hands.
We sat in awkward silence for a little time, until Harry thankfully broke the ice.
"Can I ask why the customers here are so protective of you? They got very very pissed at me when I came here the first time. "
"Yeah... They're sort of my second family. At least the regulars. And the others who work here of course. They were always like this. Ever since I started working here but it's grown ever since James... you know..." I tried hard to get the words out of my mouth. I was still struggling with saying it out loud. Sometimes I could and sometimes I couldn't.
"You don't have to finish that sentence Jas. I get it." He said and placed his palm lightly on my cheek. I felt myself blush a little as he gently stroked it with his thumb before letting his hand drop. Well, since you can't go tonight I'll just have to find another day to actually see your life outside this bar." He said to change the subject.
I scoffed. "What?" He asked.
"I don't have much of a life outside this bar anymore Haz. I just go home and eat and sleep. That's it."
"But I heard that you were in uni. What about that?"
"Not you too." I groaned.
"Jasmin what's wrong?" He said and raised his eyebrows in question.
"I can't really go back to school right now Harry. There's no room in my head, if that makes sense."
"It does. I'm sorry I asked." He apologized.
"It's fine. Don't worry."
"You know what this means don't you?"
"No what does it mean?" I asked suspiciously. I had gone through many a detention back in school because of Harry's o-so-brilliant plans.
"That means that it's up to me to help you regain a social life."
"I do have a social life! In here! These people are my family Haz!"
"Exactly. One needs a life outside the family too. Which means that you're coming with me to meet some people this Friday." He stated.
"No Harr-" I started to protest but he shut me up by lacing his hand flat over my mouth.
"No Jas. You're coming whether you like it or not. Now I have to go to the studio for a few hours before Lou comes to pick me up. Let me know if you change your mind about tonight." He said and stood up. We hugged briefly and with a wave he was out the door.
