My Brother's Best Friend

Jasmin Smith is no one special to the eyes of the public. A normal pretty barmaid at a pub, a talent for singing and a flat in London. But not too long ago, Jasmin received some horrible news. Her twin brother, her other half, James has passed on, and she is now alone.
Jasmin and James are originally from Holmes Chapel, and James's best friend was no other than Harry Styles. The two boys lost touch when Harry started getting whirled around in the famous life, but even after all the time that has passed, Harry is devastated at the news of James passing away. When he and Jasmin meet by chance, he makes it his mission to help her recover after the great loss she has suffered, and perhaps recover himself with her help. He feels it is his duty towards James to protect and shelter her, but never did he expect that those feelings should grow much stronger than that.

42. Chapter 39

Excited screams fill the airport, and Maria and I stand off to the side, guarded by two burly men in suits. I’m keeping her quite close to me, afraid of what might happen if she wanders off too far. I am aware that I am turning into an over protective mother hen, but Maria is my little girl now, and in my defence, we are standing in an airport stuffed with hormonal teenage girls. They’re unpredictable.
Niall and Liam come into view, then Zayn and Harry. Louis brings up the rear. I can feel happiness radiating off Eleanor, who is standing next to me, waving at her boyfriend. The boys reach us, and Louis immediately draws Eleanor in for a kiss. I smile when I see how happy they both look.
Then all of a sudden, all I see is brown hair. Harry is lifting me up by my waist, and when I squeal and look down, he is smiling like an idiot right up at me. When he puts me down, I decide to act now, and take the consequence later, and I feel proud to be closer to the old Jasmin when I put my hands on his cheeks and kiss him. I faintly hear the collective gasp of a large crowd, but I couldn’t care less. Harry is just as into it as I am, and grabs the small of my back, pressing me against him. I break into a smile, and he lets me go and picks up Maria. I keep lecturing him on how she is way too big for it, but they both enjoy it so much, I can’t bring myself to say anything this time. Harry plants a big kiss on Maria’s cheek, and she hugs his neck tightly.

After a half hour, the security guys have managed to get us all into two respective cars. Harry, Maria and I are in a car with Louis and Eleanor, Liam took a cab to meet up with his girlfriend somewhere, and Zayn and Niall share the other car.
“How was South America? I’ve always wanted to see it.” I ask.
“You know we can just go anytime you can take a week or two off work right?” Harry chuckles from the passenger seat. Maria is in the seat behind him, reaching around it so Harry can hold her hand.
“We’ll see.”
“It was great.” Louis answers. “I do love it there. But it’s mostly all hotel rooms planes busses and arenas, then the same routine all over again.” He explains.
“It’s a shame you don’t get more time to see these places.” Eleanor muses, leaning her head on Louis’ shoulder. I see in the rear-view mirror that Louis’ arm is around her, and that his face is turned into her hair, and I smile.
“It’s not lack of time.” Harry says. “It’s because we can’t go anywhere without a bunch of bodyguards and stuff. We’d ruin the sights for other people.”

After dropping off Louis and Eleanor at his place, I turn the car homeward. We sit in the living room, and Maria fills Harry in on everything her football team has been up to, every match they’ve won, and tells him how nice her choir teacher at school is, and she keeps talking for a long time. Eventually, the time for her to go to bed comes, and she grudgingly obliges.
“She’s the best little kid in the world.” Harry laughs as I come back into the room after having tucked her in.
“Yeah, but you didn’t have to deal with that fever.” I say. He shrugs in surrender.
“I guess you’re right. I was really worried about her though.”

The next day while I’m at work, Harry takes Maria around the city, to the zoo, the movies, and to her favourite restaurant, a Belgian Tintin and smurf themed place. Throughout the day, I get photos sent to me of Maria petting a goat, or Maria with a chocolate moustache from the massive cup of hot chocolate Harry bought her.
I’m working the day shift today, which means there’s really nothing to do other than clean a few things since every guest has been served. I’m wiping glasses when Kristian comes up and joins me.
“Hey. I thought you were working the night shift tonight.” I say, setting aside a beer jug.
“Charlie called me in last minute to unload the truck. It’s coming in a few hours.” He explained, giving me a quick smile.
“How’s the kid?”
“She’s great. Harry’s had her on a fieldtrip the entire day.” I say, and show him a picture of her pointing excitedly at a group of penguins.
We fall into a comfortable silence, and I enjoy being back to this with Kristian. Somewhere along the road, out relationship turned strange and unnatural, and I did miss my friend a lot. But this was the way it used to be. And it was great.
“Have you heard from Janey lately? She’s been avoiding having the same shifts as me. I’m just wondering how she’s doing.” I ask after a while, when the last glass has been wiped and tucked away. I jump up and perch myself on the bar, cleaning my nails. Kristian leans on the counter, and I don’t miss the little smile that comes to his lips.
“Actually, she’s not avoiding you. She’s avoiding me.” He says and shakes his head.
“Why is Janey avoiding you?”
“She’s pissed because I told her off after dropping a whole crate of Jack Daniels. She managed to smash all of the bottles in one go. Just like that. Even though they were in a wooden crate.”
I tried to help it, but I just couldn’t. I burst out laughing, and bent over when my ribs started to cramp.
“She needs to be fired.” Kristian says with an amused shake of his head. “Seriously. I can’t take much more of her huffing and puffing.”
“Good thing she’s avoiding you then.” I snicker.
The bell at the door goes off, and I look up to see Macy standing there with a big smile and a huge bag from Forever 21.
“Hi!” I exclaim and rush around the bar. She meets me between two empty tables and hugs me quickly before opening the bag to pull out a blob of light green, airy fabric.
“This is for you.” She announces and unfolds the garment to reveal a lovely dress that looks like something straight out of a 50’s movie.
“You didn’t have to do that! Thank you so much.” I say and hug her again.
“No problem babe.”
“Let’s get you something to drink.” I say and pull her towards the bar. She sits on a stool, and I introduce her to Kristian while I mix her the John Collins she requested. She and Kristian fall into easy conversation, which I join occasionally. After a while, I go out back to see that the truck is here, and I go inside to tell Kristian that he has work to do. But I can’t do it. Both him and Macy look so happy talking to each other that I smile instead, and go out to start unloading the supplies myself.
