My Brother's Best Friend

Jasmin Smith is no one special to the eyes of the public. A normal pretty barmaid at a pub, a talent for singing and a flat in London. But not too long ago, Jasmin received some horrible news. Her twin brother, her other half, James has passed on, and she is now alone.
Jasmin and James are originally from Holmes Chapel, and James's best friend was no other than Harry Styles. The two boys lost touch when Harry started getting whirled around in the famous life, but even after all the time that has passed, Harry is devastated at the news of James passing away. When he and Jasmin meet by chance, he makes it his mission to help her recover after the great loss she has suffered, and perhaps recover himself with her help. He feels it is his duty towards James to protect and shelter her, but never did he expect that those feelings should grow much stronger than that.

3. Chapter 2

* flashback*
"You bastard!" I laughed and shot up to pursue James. He'd snatched my schoolbag and started running with it.
"Get back here!" I shouted.
"Never!" He screamed with a grin and bolted. I ran after him and tackled him to the ground. We landed in a pile on the grass and laughed our hearts out.
"Don't kill my brother Haz!" Jasmine called with a smile from her place on a lawn chair. Her feet were propped up on another and she was reading her favorite book. The worn cover of her copy of Pride and Prejudice greeted me from her hands.
"I'll try!" I called back but her attention had already been turned back to her book, and by the look on her face she was in another world entirely.

"Harry. Harry!" Louis' voice shook me out of my flashback. Liam must've called him over.
"What?"
"You sort of spaced out on me there mate."
"Sorry."
"Is there anything we can do?" He asked. People think that Lou is always up and running and with a constant fire in his behind but really he's not. He's actually one of the more sane of us.
"Try to get me a plane ticket home before this Sunday."
"Of course. Get some sleep." He said. I nodded and laid down under the covers. I closed my eyes, but I knew that sleep wouldn't find me tonight. I just laid there. I heard Liam come back in.
"How is he?" he asked.
"Not good Liam. I've never seen him like this. You take my bed with Niall tonight ok? I'm staying here. God only knows what he'll do."
"Yeah sure. You get some sleep too Lou."
"I will. See you in the morning Li."

(Jasmin's POV)
I gingerly ran my fingers along the letters engraved on James' headstone. Tears were flooding my cheeks, but they were not visible in the pouring rain. Everyone else had left. That is, the few who showed up. Especially one person's absence was noticed by me. Harry was not here. Of course the boys had lost touch, but they had been like brothers. I sat by the grave for hours. My clothes and hair was clinging to me from the rain and my makeup was running.
"Why didn't you tell me Jamie?" I sobbed. "Why? You didn't have to go through this alone."
Of course there was no response. I stood up, my legs stiff from hours of freezing in the same spot. I placed a bouquet of white roses in front of the stone and kissed my fingers. They brushed across the top of the stone, and I turned away and left.
Back at the apartment a wall of... un-homeyness hit me. Without my better half this was not home anymore. But it was all I had, and beggars can't be choosers. I laid on the couch for hours before sleep overcame me. I spent several days like that. Drifting in and out of sleep. Only leaving the couch to get water or protein bars and go to the loo.

One day my body moved by itself to get the mail. The sight of my paycheck greeted me and made me smile a little. Even though I hadn't come in for work in more thank two weeks my boss was still sending me my check. He was a little bit like a father to me. I made a mental promise to come in today. It was a Friday night, so the pub would be buzzing with life tonight. I looked at the time. Just enough to have a shower and get ready for this.

The bar was pretty dead when I came in, but I knew that in a few short hours it would be teeming with life. I looked up at the bar where Charlie, my boss was pouring some drink into a glass. He looked up when the bell rang as I entered.
"Jas! You're back!" He shouted as his face split in a smile. He wiped his hands on a towel and and walked over to me with his arms open wide. I ran into them and dug my head into his chest.
"I missed you." I said.
"We missed you too love. Every single one of us!" He said with his very VERY thick Scottish accent.
"You can start by getting into your uniform. And then take section five of the tables." He said and gave me a gentle push to the storage rooms.  I got out and changed before grabbing my little notepad and pen. I shoved them in my apron and hurried back to the front. There wasn't much going on in my section. Just three guys a little older than me. After they'd ordered and I'd made the drinks there was nothing left for me to do, so I started wiping the glasses. Charlie came up and picked up the shaker.
"I know what you did by the way." I said.
"What have I done?" He asked without looking up from his work.
"You sent me my check. When I wasn't working. You shouldn't have done that you know."
"We'll we couldn't let you starve or get evicted from your apartment could we?" He said goodnaturedly. We were silent for a little while.
"Jas? Have you been going to lectures?" He asked while slicing lemons.I shook my head.
"You need your education. You can't be stuck in this hole forever." He said with just a hint of scolding.
"I can't do that yet Charlie! People will be asking all these questions. Where have you been? What happened? Where did you go? I'm not strong enough. And I like it here. Who knows? I might take over one day."
"You have a job here as long as you need it. As long as you want it. But you deserve so much better than running a pub. Now are you going to sing tonight?" He asked to change the subject to something more cheerful. I shook my head once again.
"I don't really feel up for it."
"Your call love. I think you have some new people in your section."
"Ok." I said and went to do my job.
