My Brother's Best Friend

Jasmin Smith is no one special to the eyes of the public. A normal pretty barmaid at a pub, a talent for singing and a flat in London. But not too long ago, Jasmin received some horrible news. Her twin brother, her other half, James has passed on, and she is now alone.
Jasmin and James are originally from Holmes Chapel, and James's best friend was no other than Harry Styles. The two boys lost touch when Harry started getting whirled around in the famous life, but even after all the time that has passed, Harry is devastated at the news of James passing away. When he and Jasmin meet by chance, he makes it his mission to help her recover after the great loss she has suffered, and perhaps recover himself with her help. He feels it is his duty towards James to protect and shelter her, but never did he expect that those feelings should grow much stronger than that.

13. Chapter 12

When Harry dropped me off at home I was ready to drop down on the couch to nap for a few hours before going to work, but in my mailbox was a piece of paper preventing me from doing so.

I looked with wide eyes at the big black letters at the top of the paper.

I dropped the paper and sobbed. After reading it all I dialed my landlord's number and waited as the phone rang.

"You're evicting me on grounds of noise?" I spat at him.
"Look, I have no choice. Rules say that if I receive more than seven complaints then I have to evict you." The greasy old creepy guy said. I hated my landlord. He was unpleasant and perverted.
"And how many of those complaints are from the crazy old man across the hall? He is not right in the head and you know it!" I yelled while I paced back and forth in the living room.
"Well I have to follow the rules. No need you raise your voice love." He said with his sleek and disgusting voice.
I didn't answer him at all. I hung up and dialed the Dubliner instead.
"The Dubliner this is Kristian." He said on the other line. Tears had now made my voice crack, and I sniffled.
"Hi. It's Jas. Is Charlie there?" I asked.
"No he's out back, the truck just came in this morning. I'll go get him." He said. I heard him put down the phone and run off calling Charlie's name.
"Hey Charlie, it's me."
"What's wrong Jas? Kristian said you were all freaked out 'bout something."
"Charlie I need your help." I whispered.
"What is it? Jas love what is it? Talk to me, just keep talking to me."
"My landlord. He's evicting me Charlie, for something I didn't do! I never make noise! I never have kids around to scream and I never play music! At worst I might have seen a movie now and then or played around with Harry, but that was only once!" I cried.
"Ok that's it Jas. You're covering Janey tonight, she's out with a cold. Bring your rental contract and any other documents on your apartment. My brother in law will have to come over. Come down early Jas, you shouldn't be alone."
"Ok, I'm on my way."

Late that night I walked out of the pub with no solution to my problem. I was still getting evicted, Charlie's lawyer brother in law couldn't help me.
I came home to a basket on my doorstep. There was a little pink blanket spread across it, and it was moving. There was a little wailing sound, and I carefully bent down to move the blanket a little.
Under it was the cutest little kitten with medium length fluffy fur, snowy white and with little splotches of light grey and hazel, and the bluest eyes I've ever seen.
"Hello kitty. Where did you come from?" I muttered and picked the little creature up. It was so young it hadn't even opened its eyes yet. I used my index finger to stroke its head and put it back in the basket. I'd always loved cats, and I'd always wanted one. I could just never afford it.
I put the basket down on the table in the kitchen and picked the kitten up again. It opened it little pink mouth wide in a yawn and stretched in my hand. It was so small I could cup it in one of my palms. There was a little note in the bottom of the basket, and I picked it up.
It read,
Figured you didn't like being alone in that apartment, and you always did want a cat right? Anyway, this little guy's mum was run over in the street today. I figured he'd need a new one. Up for the job?

I smiled to myself and stroked the little animal down his back. She made a sweet purr and pushed her little head into my palm.
I put her back and went to my fridge to heat up some milk for her while I thought of a name.
I stirred the milk so it wouldn't burn and pressed my phone in between my shoulder and ear, praying that I didn't wake up Harry.
It rang once, twice, three times before he answered.
"Hey Hazza."
"Jas hi!"
"You left a kitten on my doorstep?" I chuckled.
"Well... yeah I did." He said. I could picture him smiling that goofy dimpled smile and scratching the back of his neck while he said it.
"Thank you, he's adorable. I'm having a hard time finding a name though."
"Yeah? Well, I don't know. Name him after someone. Einstein or Tesla or whatever." He contributed.
"James." The name was out of my mouth before I could stop it.
"Yeah. James." Harry said after a little while. "I love how you don't mind at all that I just drop a kitten off at your apartment at random. No questions asked." He chuckled.
"About that. I probably can't have him around for a little while, is it alright if I leave him with you?"
"Of course. Why? Are you painting your place or something?"
"Not exactly."
"Jas, I know that voice, tell me what's going on." He said. It was scary how much this boy actually remembered about me, since he'd been my brother's best friend, not mine.
"I'm uh... I'm moving..."
"Really? Well why didn't you say anything? I was with you all day. I can help you pack and carry stuff." He immediately started to offer his services.
"No no no. I can manage. It's just... I think there's too many memories in this place." I lied.
"Jas, you're forgetting that we grew up side by side. I know every single voice of yours, and that one means you're lying."
"Well, the thing is, I don't really know where I'm moving to." I chuckled darkly.
"What? Well then why are you moving in the first place if you don't know where to go?"
"I'm getting evicted Haz." I finally sighed.
"Eviction. You know, getting kicked out?"
"I know what eviction means but... why?" He asked sounding completely lost, almost more than I felt.
"Because the man across the hall is crazy. He hears things that aren't real, and he's been complaining about noise."
"Do you have a shift tomorrow?" He asked out of the blue.
"Yeah at twelve why?"
"I'll come in tomorrow then." He stated, mater of fact.
"No Haz you don't have to-"
"Yes I do. I'll see you tomorrow."
He hung up, and I was left standing with my mouth hanging open.
"James Jr." I mumbled. "That's a good name."
Jr. meowed, and I took the milk off the stove and poured it into a little bowl. Jr. couldn't figure out how to drink it, so I got out a teaspoon and used that to feed the little guy.
"There you go baby. You are gonna love staying with Harry. He's going to spoil you rotten, I'm sure of it." I cooed and continued to feed the little creature in my hand. When he was done I tried to put him back in the basket, but I guess he thought now that I'd fed him that I was his mum... Which I guess I kind of was. He dug hid tiny little claws into my palm and meowed in complaint. He refused to let go, so I laughed a little and went to my couch. Honestly, I felt sick and I was too tired for anything, but I put on a movie and got my blanket. I was snuggled up on the couch, half watching the movie, half stroking the soft fur of my new pet to make him fall asleep. He yawned again and showed off his little pink mouth. It was adorable, and I smiled. I tried to watch the movie again, but eventually it got so boring that I drifted into a peaceful sleep in spite of today's events.
