2. Anna's Secret

I have a secret.

I looked down at what I had just written on the piece of paper and sighed. A secret? I looked over at Carrie, who rolled her eyes. I knew exactly was she was thinking. Carrie thought most of the assignments in this class were pointless and juvenile, and that Mr. Harries had just randomly picked them from a teaching website for no other goal than to just see us squirm. But Carrie still liked Mr. Harries. Everyone did.

"Hey, Anna!" Joshua kicked the back of my chair. I turned around to him and scowled.

"What do you want, Joshua?"

"Woah! No need to get irritated, Benn. I just wanted to know what you wrote"

I turned back to face the front. Joshua Pike was the most annoying boy to walk through the doors of Addlington. Every chance he got he kicked my chair, or flicked pieces of paper in my hair. But I wasn't going to stoop to his level by starting something, not in front of Mr. Harries.

"Hey, did you write that down, Pike?"

"Yes, sir. Kind of stupid though, isn't it?"
And the whole class turned to Mr. Harries, waiting to see his reaction. But he just grinned and put his hands in the air.

"Unfortunately I don't choose the topics, mate. I'd much rather be hitting up Ibiza than here"

The class laughed. All the girls were completely entranced, with his swept up brown hair and his sparkling green eyes. He was new, Mr. Harries. I remember last month when he walked in, and all the girls' mouths fell to the floor. It was quite a change for us, seeing as our last English teacher was an cranky, middle-aged woman who could barely remember our names.

"Tell us about your travels, Sir" Victoria Spelling asked in flirtatious tone she saved for just Mr. Harries.

"Ibiza was mad. It was like a non-stop party the whole time" His eyes caught mine and then moved quickly on. "L.A was really cool, really nice people. Sri Lanka was amazing, beautiful scenery. And Mexico was something you have to experience"

"Ooh, Will you take me?" Victoria asked, fluttering her eyelashes at him. A jealous anger rose inside me. Victoria couldn't keep her hands of anyone, boy, man or monkey. But Mr. Harries just raised his eyebrows and laughed.

"Sure, we'll go on a class trip there sometime"

"There's bugs in Sri Lanka" Andrew said, matter-of-factly.

"Oh, well then you might have to protect me then, Mr. Harries" Victoria said, that little grin on her face.

"You're right, Andrew. We had to get vaccines before going over"

"Did they hurt?" Raven asked in her usual dead-pan tone.

"The vaccines?" Mr. Harries asked, amused. "No, not really" Raven looked disappointed.

"I bet you could handle anything" Victoria batted her eyelashes again. And then I broke.

"Have you no shame?" I asked, turning around in my seat to her.

"Excuse me?" She looked surprised.

"Have some self-respect" I said, wishing I hadn't opened my mouth now that everyone was staring at me, including him.

"I was just..."

Just then bell rang for the end of class and everyone lost interest in our conversation. Victoria got up from her seat and on the way to the door, turned to me.

"You're just jealous that me and Mr. Harries get on so well"

"Oh grow up, Victoria"

With a flounce she stormed out of the class. I walked up to his desk.

"Anna" He said softly, not looking me straight in the eye.

"I'm sorry, I kind of flipped"

He tried to look serious, but there was a hint of smile on his face.

"Have some self-respect, eh?"

"I hated the way she was looking at you"

I leaned in over the desk towards him instinctively, but reclined when I realised what I was doing.

"You know, she could make life hard for you now"

"Oh please, Victoria Spelling is all talk and no action. It's me she needs to be worried about"

"If two of you boxed it out in a ring, who would win?"

"I guess it depends on what's the prize"

He smiled, and looked quickly at the door.

"Are you still coming for tutoring tonight?"

He nodded.

"Can't let you miss out on the wonders of F. Scott Fitzgerald, can I? I'll be over about six"

"Free tutoring with a good-looking teacher, how did I get so lucky?

He laughed and waved me off.

"Anna" He said, as was about to open the door.

"Yeah?"
He smiled.

"Try not to get so jealous in class, however cute it is. You know you're above those girls in every way"

I nodded.

"And stop looking at me, Finn, however hard it is not to. I know its hard, but people might notice"

He shook his head with laughter. I closed the door and left out a content breath. There in the classroom was my secret.
