Letters To Dougie

Dougie Hardesty's family business was enrolling in the military. His father did it, his father before that did it, and so did his father. So it wasn't a surprise when he did. But what Dougie didn't know, was that his trainer, Kelly Rose, was one of the best. She was one of the only trainers who went one on one with each of her men. She was tougher than half the men that came through the MEU Ground Combat Element. She never let any man phase her. She never let any one man get into her head. Untilthe tragedy..until Dougie..

-Dougie-

This is what I was born to do. What I was raised to do. My whole life I was raised to be a marine. I can't say I don't want to, but I can't say that I want to do anything else. I don't know anything other than that. It's in my blood. My father was a marine, and his father before that. I don't think I have the brains to do anything else. My grades aren't the worst, but I don't think they are good enough to do anything worth doing. So, naturally, I enroll myself in the marines and solve all my problems. I have had a few girlfriends, but nothing too serious. They were all nice girls, but I definitely could not spend the rest of my life with them. I could not hold a relationship mainly because I was busy. Busy being a dumb ass. I was quarterback of my state title winning football team, which meant lots of celebrations. And lots of celebrations, meant lots of alcohol. Lots of alcohol  meant getting hardcore wasted. And I think you can figure out the rest. I didn't think that all the trouble I got into would affect me getting into the marines, but my dad thought it would. He wasn't mean to me, he didn't beat me or anything, but he would punish me if I did something wrong. He would yell at me for awhile, then after he simmered down a little bit he would calm down and talk quietly and tell me to "clean up my act for the corps". My dad was a good man. In fact, he was a great man. Everyone in my small town knew him and heeded his advice. After he left the marines he started a small bait shop down by the river. He didn't make much money, but we never needed much. My mom was wonderful. She is one of the kindest, funniest, most caring person I know. She's a vet, and I always remember people coming to our small house in the middle of the night in some kind of thunderstorm with a stray dog that they had hit by their car. My mom never turned a single one down, no matter how late it was.

So basically, my marine family is the best kind of family I know.
