36. Unlucky Friday

"How many times have I told you not to play with fire?"
The words echoed in Nolan's mind as he rolled the glowing embers around in his hands. Anyone else would have already had a scorched hand, but not Nolan.
"But it's safe!" The scene played out in the boy's mind as he watched the embers. "Here, touch it. It doesn't burn."
"Put that out right now! You could burn the house down!" his mother had screeched, sticking his hand under the faucet. The embers turned to wet ashes in his palm.
"Sorry, not this time, mum," he voiced to himself, the orange reflecting off his face like a tiny sun. "This time it's you that will burn."
Without warning, he threw the embers into the center of the room. The carpet immediately caught.
Burn... He will the fire forward, raising his hands in slow motion above his head. Burn!
Within minutes the entire room was aflame. He smiled, walking into the yard to watch the blaze, the night dew on the grass cold on his bare feet. The entire building was burning. After a mere ten seconds, he snapped his fingers and the flames went out instantly.
Returning to the house, it was exactly as he left it. There was no scorch marks on anything; nothing was burned. It was almost as if the fire never happened.
Excerpt from Liverpool Echo: Friday, July 13, 2006
"...The next morning, a scream emanated from Doreen's room. A girl that appeared to be the eldest of the two children discovered her mother burned alive in her own bed. No evidence of a fire was present and the boy, her younger sibling, appeared to be completely traumatized, crying about a monster that played with fire in the night."
