60. Training Day

Telaq plucked an arrow from his quiver, his hooves shifting in the dirt. He was antsy and ready to begin the hunt, but Korleq had warned him not to begin until she was present.
The centaur sighed, growing impatient. The haumin wasn't going to be around forever. Its trip to the creek was brief at best. The long, snake-like head twisted around, checking for danger. The long, white mane that ran down its back flowed like an icy river. He had always thought they were beautiful, and it was a pity to kill them, but they were the best food source in the valley.
The beast nickered and bowed its head to the water again, waving its clubbed tail around in case something decided to get close. Telaq's impatience got the better of him and he raised his bow to take aim.
"Gettin' a little ahead o' yerself there, ain'tcha?" a familiar voice whispered. Telaq turned around, still holding the bow, ready to shoot. "Woah, there, little colt. Watch where yer aimin' that thing."
He sighed in relief at the face of his instructor Korleq. "Don't sneak up on me like that," he whispered.
"I tol'ja I'd be a bit late," she frowned, feigning offense. She strung her bow by putting her front hoof lightly on the yew branch. It was an old weapon, but it was useful. She had shown Telaq how to make his own just last week. "Now, haumin 're powerful, but slow. If you kin injure an ankle quickly, their your's fer th' takin'," she explained, taking aim.
The arrow flew through the air silently, and struck the beast square in the leg. It brayed and bucked, but another arrow came sizzling through the air before it could move, landing just below the first. Blinded by pain, the haumin fell over with a groan and whinny.
"Wow," Telaq gasped, his mouth falling open.
"Next tahm, ye can get it," she said with a grin, giving him a playful nudge.
