29. Mezica

The forest outside Mezica was lush and green this time of year. Many of the residents often ventured into it in search of berries for the meals they prepared in their small huts. The lived in peace, apart from much of modern civilization.
Occasionally, strange men would approach the village with guns, but in small groups. The villagers were kind and welcoming, able to understand and speak whatever the newcomers would comprehend. The strange men were amazed every time, and for this, they left the village to its own.
They came to trade with Mezica now and then, but never forced anything on them, a strange action compared to what most of the strange men had been doing all century. For their peace, he granted them the gift of tongues so that they could communicate with the strange men. This, along with their welcoming attitudes had saved Mezica many times.
There were a few times the strange men had tried to hunt the Kimir. And, there were a few times they never came back. Only once had one returned, sobbing in fear, to the village, babbling about a big dragon-dog. The villagers laughed and told him "You cannot hunt the Kimir!"
The villagers respected the Kimir, and the Kimir watched over them.
This is how the people of Mezica lived for many generations.
For many generations, until that fateful day....
