Penguins: A Love Story

Did you know that when penguins mate, they mate for life? They are the only animals to do this. And when a male penguin has chosen a mate, he searches the entire beach just to find the right pebble to give to her. Exactly like a proposal. Penguins are soul mates, loving one another until they die.

"Penguins" follows the romance of Theo and Claire; two people who never thought they could be loved, but then found each other. Theo was the quiet, shy guy who was universally liked, but no one really knew him. Claire was a bright, sunny soul who always had a smile on her face that hid her inner pain. Could they be penguins? Or will these lovebirds be wrenched apart by the very things that bind them together?

9. Chapter 9

"Do you want to hang out sometime?" Theo asked Claire over the phone.
She bit her lip and laid back down on her bed, holding the device closer to her ear. She had no free time anymore, and if by some chance, she actually got a moment to herself, she was so exhausted, she didn't want to do anything other than sleep. She couldn't say yes.
"I'm sorry Theo, but I can't."
"Okay." Theo said flatly. Claire could practically feel his disappointment.
"I've got to go anyway. See you at school." he continued, hanging up the phone.
Claire sat in silence for a few moments, clenching the chord in a tight grip. He was mad at her, she could tell. But there was nothing she could do. Claire was stuck between a rock and a hard place. This situation was impossible to get out of.

She turned and looked at the picture of Theo sitting next to the snow globe on her night stand. It was her favorite photograph of him. They were sitting outside of school, waiting for his mom. She'd quickly snapped the photo before he could notice, so he wasn't looked straight at the camera. His floppy brown hair was mussed by the wind and his blue eyes were bright from smiling.

Claire picked the picture up and held it tight to her chest. Tears pricked her eyes and she angrily swiped them away. She refused to cry over a boy. She didn't utterly depend on him, did she? No, of course she didn't. Female empowerment! She was a strong, independent young woman who- Oh screw it. Claire's face crumpled and she burst into tears. It was the first time she ever cried over a guy and she knew it wouldn't be the last.
"Please don't take him from me." Claire whispered miserably.
"My mom's gone, my dad's as good as gone, let me keep Theo. Please."
Claire didn't know who she was talking to, but she sure hoped they were listening.

A few nights later, Theo just randomly showed up at Claire's house. She was busy making lunch for the next day. He took the bag of bread from her hands and put it  high up on the shelf, out of her reach.
"Look at me." he ordered gently, holding her waist.
She was trembling, about to start crying. Their eyes met and Claire shut hers, tears seeping out.
"Just do it already." she begged,
"Get it over with."
"Do what?" Theo asked, confused.
"Break up with me!"
"What?"
"It's obvious you want to! I'm an awful girlfriend. i never have anytime for you; who in their right mind would want to date me?"
Theo put his hand on her shoulders, rubbing the knots of tension in her back,
"Well then," he began,
"I must be absolutely insane."
Claire's tear-stained eyes flicked to his face and she rammed her mouth against his, making him stagger backwards.
"Come hell or high water, were are spending time together tonight." Claire said, grabbing his hand.

They spent the evening out in her back yard, on a blanket, staring at the stars. They talked for hours, about nothing and everything.  Eventually, the words stopped and they just sat in silence. Claire laid with her head on Theo's chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. He took out his iPod and they listening to music. "Chasing Cars" by Snow Patrol came on and Theo grinned,
"This is my favorite song." he said softly.
Claire smiled and turned the music up louder.

Claire looked at Theo out of the corner of her eye. He looked so peaceful, holding her in his arms. She knew, in that moment, that she would be happy to   lay there and  just forget the world with him, if only for a little while. Suddenly, Theo's voice was in her ear and he was singing to her.

"We'll do it all; Everything, on our own.

We don't need anything, or anyone.

If I lay here, if I just lay here, would you lie with me

And just forget the world?"

He was so wonderful. Claire knew Theo was too shy to actually tell her how he felt, but she didn't need that. She knew just by how he acted. This song was enough, enough for her to get it.  Claire looked at the dark sky and realized something. She loved him. Claire was in love with Theo. She knew that was crazy and improbable and downright wrong for a fifteen year old girl to say, but it was true.

"I don't quite know how to say how I feel

Those three words are said too much. They're not enough"

But saying "I love you" would sound insane. He wouldn't believe her, would he? No, he wouldn't. Besides, people say they love each other all the time. It really could mean anything. They had only dated for four months now; this was not going to go down smoothly. Claire's heart beat painfully in her chest; that's how much emotion she felt in that moment.  She wanted to tell him, but she couldn't. The words wouldn't form.

"Let's waste time, chasing cars, around our heads."

But maybe they were, as Snow Patrol so eloquently put it, just chasing cars? They'd never catch what they wanted. They were still young, people change. And Claire's biggest fear was this; she didn't deserve him. Claire knew a great guy like Theo shouldn't be wasting his time on a useless girl like her, with an insane family. She started crying, but from sadness or happiness, she wasn't sure. Theo saw her tears and wiped them away, kissing her cheeks, her nose, and finally, her lips.
"I'll always want to chase cars with you, Claire." he whispered.
"You can't," Claire thought to herself miserably,
" You can't and I won't let you. You're destined for greater things than me, Teddy Bear. I have to let you go."
