9. Slips, Breakfast, and The Beach

I looked at the first slip with worried eyes before opening it, “Justin,” I spoke for the first time in a while, “ because he would treat you with respect, take you on adventures, and spoil you, which is what a girl like you needs.” I laughed a little at the last part. I could tell James wrote this one.

I laid the slip over to the side. I picked up another and opened it, “Sam because he knows you better and you know him better than Justin. Plus Justin sees girls all the time and I don’t think he’d be able to contain himself and stay faithful to one girl.” This one was Steven’s.

I gulped as I looked at the last slip. I slowly went to pick it up.

“You don’t have to read the last one out Ashlee, I mean, if you don’t want to.” Frankie spoke up. I looked over at him and into his sympathy filled eyes.

I began to open the last one as I nodded at him. I looked at the paper, read it in my head, folded it up, looked at the boys, and nodded. “I’ll sleep on it.” I said aloud.

“Okay.” They all said in unison.

James and Frankie got up to leave, but I grabbed Frankie’s arm.

“What’s wrong?”

“Uhm,” I started, not wanted to sound stupid, “is it okay if I, uhh, sleep with you Frankie?”

He smiled an opened his arms. I stood up and walked into them. We walked together down to his room. I got comfortable in his bed and I felt him hug me closer from behind.

“Why did you pick him?”

“’Cause I know he’ll treat you the way you’ve always wanted to be.”

“How do I tell the other?”

“Just tell him that you don’t have the right feelings for him; that you have more feelings for another person.”

“So I’m guessing you’re picking the one I wrote?”

“Yeah, thank you France.”

When I was younger I could never say Frankie, so I ended up always calling him 'France', but he was always fine with it. I hadn't called him that in a while.

He laughed a little at his nickname. “No problem baby. I’m always here for you. You know that.”

I yawned, “Yeah, I do. I love you France.”

“I love you too Ash.” After hearing those words, I feel asleep peaceful for the first time in a long time. I knew in the morning I would have to choose between Justin and Sam, but I was going with the boy Frankie wrote down because he knows me better than James and Steven, he knows me better than I know myself really. I was glad to have him in my life. I would be lost without him.

I woke up to a rustling sound in the room. I opened my eyes to see Frankie getting dressed. He saw me and quickly asked if he had woken me, knowing the answer was yes.

“It’s okay,” I said wiping the sleep from my eyes, “I should get up anyways.”

“Are you sure? You do know it’s only 6:45?”

I looked at the clock surprised. “Oh well, you know me; can’t go back to sleep once I wake up. Besides, this will give me more time to think about what I’ll say to each of them.”

He knew who I was referring to and nodded, “Okay, but call me if you need anything.”

I smiled, got out of bed, and walked downstairs to start making breakfast. I decided to cook for everyone this morning. I started mixing up the ingredients you needed to make waffles. I knew them from memory because I always made them with my dad when he was alive. I realized I hadn’t cooked since that day. Just as everyone was coming down I had their places set on the table with the waffles in each spot; some with blueberries, some with chocolate chips, some plain.

“Surprise!” I said.

They looked at me bug-eyed for a second before Steven said, “Blueberry?”

“Yepp, it’s in front of your spot at the table. Plain for Aunt Peggy, chocolate chip for Mariana, James, and me, and two more blueberries form Uncle Frank and Frankie.” I said with a big smile on my face.

My aunt came over and gave me a hug to thank me before everyone sat down. We said “Grace” and began eating.

I soon heard, “These are the best waffles I’ve ever had Ashlee!!”

I looked to my side to see Mariana looking up at me with a smile. “Thank you! It wasn’t much though.”

“Is there some kind of occasion?” Uncle Frank spoke.

“No sir. I just woke up early and couldn’t fall back asleep so I decided to do something with my time.”

“Are there anymore?” James asked.

“Yes, up there on the counter.”

After everyone was through eating, I asked if I could go to the beach.

“Yes, as long as James or Steven go with you.” Aunt Peggy instructed.

I looked over at them and Steven stood up.

“I’ll go!” he said eagerly. I could tell he knew why I wanted to go.

We headed out the door and half-way down the street I pulled out my phone and texted Sam. I sent the same message to Justin, but one at a time so they didn’t know I was asking them both to join me at the beach. I quickly got a reply.

From: Sam

To: Ashlee

Why should I come to the beach with you? You should just ask your new boyfriend to go with you!”

From: Ashlee

To: Sam

Harsh? Please!! I want to talk to you! I know you’re mad at me and I want to fix that. Please Sam?”

From: Sam

To: Ashlee

“Fine, I’ll be there in five.”

“Yes! Sam’s coming.” I informed Steven.

“Now we just wait for—,” he was interrupted by the sound of my phone.

From: Justin

To: Ashlee

“How could I leave my favorite girl with no one to go to the beach with :*. See you there in a few babe.”

“Justin’s coming too! It’s weird though, he called me ‘babe’ and sent me a kissy face like we were already dating.”

“Good, but that is a little strange.”

Soon enough Steven and I were walking on the beach. I saw Sam and walked over to him.

“Hey.” I spoke shyly.

He turned to face me, “Hi.”

“You know me well enough to know that I don’t like to drag things on so I’m just gonna say what I want to say. Why did you storm out of the stadium yesterday when Justin asked me to be his girlfriend?”

“Ugh, is that really the reason you wanted me to come here?”

“Not the only one, but please I need to know this.”

“Fine, if you really want to know, here it is. I like you Ashlee! I felt broken up on that stage when he asked you that! You lied to me when you said nothing happened when he took you into his dressing room. But when I got home, I started thinking about how you had never lied to me before, even when it was between me and your best friend; you had rather lost her than me. I thought about how stupid I was for hurting you by walking out. Then I remember the look in your eye after he asked you that, I know that no one else saw it—maybe Frankie did—other than me. You look confused, lost, and I knew that after I left, whatever you said to Justin, you had a look of heart-break in your eyes. I could feel you urging me to come back to you when I turned to leave. I could feel you begging me to come back, but I didn’t. I let my head to the talking; not my heart. If I had done that, I would’ve kissed you on that stage to let Justin, and everyone else in this world, that you’re mine; that nobody else can have you.” He grabbed me by the arms before continuing, making sure I was looking in his eyes. “Now, I know you deserve someone who won’t think twice when it comes to something you said; someone who would trust every word that came from your mouth. I know that isn’t me all the time, but I know for a fact that it isn’t Justin either. If he saw one picture of you with someone else, he’d probably flip thinking that you were cheating. Please; forgive me. I know you asked me to come here because you’re trying to choose, Justin or me. Just know that I respect whatever you choose.” He smiled at me softly and let go of my arms. He went to turn away from me, but I stopped him.

“Did you mean all of that?”

“Yeah, yeah I did.”

I hugged him. As soon as I did though, I felt eyes on my back; piercing me from behind.

“I thought you wanted ME to come walk on the beach with you; not this, boy.” I heard Justin say harshly.

I turned around saying, “That’s the thing. I only asked you to COME to the beach.”

“No you said you wanted to walk with me.”

“No,” I said while getting my phone out, “I said ‘Justin! Come to the beach. We need to talk! It’s very important.’ Not ‘come walk with me’.”

“What?” he pulled his phone out and looked at the message. “Well, what do you want to talk about?”

“Sam, can you let Justin and I talk alone please?”

“Yeah, sure thing.”

“Thanks.” I turned my attention back to Justin, “So tell me why I should agree to be your girlfriend?”

“’Cause you’re the prettiest girl I’ve ever seen Ashlee!”

“That’s the only reason you have for me?” I looked at him surprised, “I thought you’d actually try to act like you actually wanted me.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You don’t fool me Justin. I know you just thought I was pretty, that you just wanted to get me in your bedroom and give me the ‘time of my life’. Really Justin; is this what you do with all the girls that you run into at the mall?”

“No Ashlee! I asked you to go out with me because you look like the type I would date. My family has always wanted me to date a fan anyways!”

“So that’s why? I look like ‘the type’ you would date and because I’m ‘a fan’? Am I just a fan to you Justin? I thought I was more than that. I guess I’ve found my answer!”

“Please Ashlee! You’re not just a fan to me! Let me explain.” He begged.

“When we were behind that bush in the mall and you first looked up at me, the look in your eyes said something to me; I can’t explain it, but I knew you were something. Something I wanted. You’re beautiful, funny, caring, daring,” he laughed a little, “I was having a bad day that day, and my fans chasing me was making it worse. But then I saw you. I swear it was love at first sight, and I’d do anything for you. If you want more time to get to know me, then there! It’s done! I don’t care how long it’ll take Ashlee. I want you all to myself. I don’t want anyone else to get in our way. I feel something for you that I’ve never felt before in my life, and, if you let me, I’ll take you anywhere and everywhere you want to go! Whatever you say, you’ll have. You know those old couples walking down the street, holding hands, and being in love? I want that to be us.”

I looked at him in disbelief. I was taken back at what he had said; like I was a million dollars, or something; everything to him. I didn’t know what to say. I guess he took it as rejection because he looked at me sadly before turning away and leaving.

My knees felt like Jell-O and they soon gave out. I was on the ground when I felt two arms pull me up.

“What’s wrong?” Sam said as soon as I was back firmly on my feet.

I had turned so I was facing him, but his hands hadn’t left my sides in case my knees decided to give out again. “He didn’t stay to hear what I had to say. He thinks I just kicked to the curb; like he was nothing.”

“Hey, hey it’s okay. Shhhhh, it’ll be fine.” He cooed.

Steven came over to me. “Come on; we should go home.”

We walked in the door and when Frankie saw me, he came over to me quickly. He pulled me into a hug and as soon as my knees gave out again he picked me up and took me to the couch.

“It’s okay baby. What happened?”

I told him everything. He looked at me and was about to say something before Sam said something first.

“Are you okay Ashlee?”

I looked at him and nodded. I got up and walked over to him.

“Thank you; for always being there for me.”

“I wouldn’t be anywhere else.” He looked at Frankie and I turned in time to see him nod. I looked back at Sam confused, but the confusion quickly went away. It didn’t even take a second before Sam took my face in his hands and kissed my lips softly. I wasn’t sure what to do, but Sam took the lead.

I broke the kiss and looked to see James standing at the end of the steps.

“I must have missed something big!! Frankie?! Where are you man? If they had gone on any longer who knows where their clothes would land!”

I looked away blushing, “Well Sam, I think it’s safe to say, I picked you since you heard me out and made sure I was okay.”

He laughed and asked, “Ashlee, would you be my girlfriend?”

“Yes, I would love to!”

He kissed me on the cheek and decided he should go home. We planned to meet again tomorrow if my aunt would allow. That night, before I went to sleep, I took out the last slip, Frankie’s slip. I reread it over again.

“I know you said not to say ‘follow your heart’, but that’s the best thing to do. I think need to let your heart do the thinking, and finally take my advice that I’ve always told you. The torn can always be fixed; you just have to find the person who can fix it for you.”

When I put the slip down I looked up at the sound of my door and saw Frankie.

“You were right, and I found my person.”

He smiled and nodded before coming over and kissing me on my head. After that he left and I decided to go to sleep.

‘The torn can always be fixed.’ kept repeating itself in my head and as I thought of Sam as I drifted off to sleep.
