9. Trapped

"What do we do now?" Feebee's voice faint in the roar of the explosions. "We can't turn back." Conner frowned. "It's our only way." I said. I turned to look behind me. Then I sighed and trudged around.

"Who made you the leader?" Olivia's annoyed voice stopped me. "Livia! Don't be rude!" Oliver winced. I turned back. "If you have a better idea, I'm willing to listen. But we don't have much time, so shoot." I didn't mean to sound rude, but what was her problem? Olivia sniffed and stuck her nose in the air.

"Up."

I stared at her.

"Um, smoke?"

"It's clearing up."

"It'll still harm us."

"Oh, you're just scared."

"No one is going into that smoke."

"Weak."

"We don't have time for this Olivia,"

"But-"

"We're staying on the ground and that's an order."

I spun around and stalked back the way we came. I can give orders. But I've just never done it before. Olivia was just hopeless, though. I couldn't deal with her.

I was so mad I didn't realize there wasn't anyone following me until I heard a blood curdling scream.

"Aqua!" I wove through the flames. Aqua is my little sister and she means everything to me. She had been the one screaming.

Immediately, I assume the worst;

They must have followed Olivia's crazy plan.

I streaked blindly towards the sound.

"Aqua!"

Everything's silent now, except for the roaring of the fire. Flaming trees are falling all around me now.

Fear made my heart thump. An image pops into my mind; Mother pinned under a fallen tree and Aqua sobbing beside her. What if a tree fell on Aqua or any one of my friends? That thought steamed me up again. I ran towards the place I had heard the scream.

"Aqua!" I burst into a tiny clearing and was greeted by Aqua trowing arms around my neck and nearly strangling me in a hug. "I was so worried." I whispered. Then I pushed Aqua away.

"I thought I made it clear when I said that we were staying on the ground." I hissed. Aqua stared at me. "We did stay on the ground." She said.

"Then why didn't you follow me?"

"We lost you in the flames."

"And?"

"Well, we were kinda having some trouble with a certain someone."

Aqua turned to glare at Olivia. She ducked her head and stared at the ground. I narrowed my eyes at her. Oliver nudged her. "I'm sorry, Fire." She murmured, eyes still glued to the burnt grass. "I don't know what's gotten into me lately."

A ripple of sympathy slithered through me. I'm such a pushover.

I sighed. "That's okay, Olivia. But come on, we don't have time for this."

Then the ground quivered beneath our feet. "Oh, not again." Feebee groaned. "Yup. Again." Snowy dug his claws into the ground and crouched down.

It's nice to have such intelligent friends. The rest of us immediately copied him.

I squeezed my eyes shut and braced for the explosion that followed. A deafening boom echoed in my ears.

But to my utter surprise I wasn't tossed into the air like an old sock this time.

So can you imagine my shock when a very familiar groan sounds over my head?

I glanced up to see the flaming branches of a young birch tree falling towards us. All of us are screaming now, and scrambling to our feet. I ran towards Aqua and pushed her out of the way. Then I sprinted to Olivia and gave her a shove that sent her tumbling out of the tree's reach.

A splintering sound above me made my heart stop. I could feel that the heat.

Another groan and I know I'm as good as goner.

I squeezed my eyes closed and wait for death.

Something heavy fell on my back and the ache tells me I'm trapped.

Again.

And with that, everything went dark.
