12. So Little Yet So Much

I walked slowly out of school, keeping my head down and eyes fixed on the ground.

Then I started to notice something weird. Everywhere I went cats started whispering and turning there backs to me. A fire flamed up inside of me. You don't turn your back to the princess!

And besides, what did I do to piss everyone off now? Oliver gave me a weird look as I passed him. I veered off to join him. "What's going on?" I asked.

"I could ask you the same thing."

"I don't know!"

"This is just weird."

"You're telling me."

I shivered. "Let's go." Oliver took me by the arm and gently led me out of sight of everyone else.

"Are you sure you have no idea what's going on?" I prodded him again. "Well... I heard that Shontel was spreading rumors about you being the one who murdered Feebee." Oliver said in a low voice.

I stared at him in disbelief. "Either Shontel's mentally ill, or she's out on the path of revenge." I said finally.

Oliver looked at me. "What have you done now?" He asked. I looked into his eyes but his face was expressionless.

"You don't believe me, do you?" My heart literally sank into the ground.

"Believe you about what?"

"That I didn't kill Feebee!"

"Of course I believe you. You wouldn't hurt Feebee. She's your best friend."

The bitter note in his voice caught me.

"Feebee is one of of my closest friends, but you have been my very best friend since grade one and will always be."

Oliver was silent. So I tried again.

"Look, what's wrong?"

We walked silently. I could tell Ollie was in a bad mood.

And honestly, I was in a bad mood now too.

Why would Shontel spread rumors about me?
