8. A Suspicious Explosion

My "little comment" drove everyone into crazy mode.

I thought the screams would bust my eardrums. Oliver, Charles and I were the only ones not screeching for our lives. Charles looked annoyed. Ollie just sat there calmly.

"I guess we should just stay here panicking and get swallowed up in the flames!" I said loudly. Okay, I admit I lost my temper. "What flames?" Feebee asked in a tiny voice. I sighed and pointed behind the cluster. "Those flames."

The sound of dynamite bursting filled my ears. Everyone was tossed into the air. Shrieks filled the sky.

"Fleet and fire!" I screamed.

"OH MY GOD!" Olivia curled into a ball and flipped towards the ground. Smart, if you want to risk falling on your head. Or breaking your spine.

Aqua's screams got louder as we got closer to the ground.

Conner's eyes were wide and his teeth were gritted with fear.

We landed with a crash. Flames roared around us and smoke plumes reached for the clouds.

"Oh, ow..." Conner moaned. I turned my head towards him. Aqua had landed on top of him.

She scrambled to her feet. "Oh my god! I'm so sorry!" Aqua cried, looking very, very embarrassed. Conner lifted his head. He looked slightly amused. "That's okay," He said.

There's no time for this! My brain yelled. I shook my head slightly to clear out my thoughts. "Come on," I croaked. "We should get going."

I lifted my head and everyone followed my gaze. The wall of flames was rising higher. I'd been in this situation before, and I hadn't liked it.

"Let's go, Fire. Before anything else happens." Feebee's voice jerked me out of my grim memories. I nodded. "We have to get out of here. Let's look for a way out."

"How 'bout that way?" Snowy pointed to a slim passage. I'd never seen it before, but today seemed to be our lucky day. I smiled gratefully at him.

"Good-" A coughing fit broke into my words. "-Idea." Oliver finished my sentence for me. Without really deciding, we slipped into a line with Charles in the front and me taking the rear.

Snowy and Olivia were pressed together, I noticed. Seeing them a small, faint smile hovers on my lips.

We slinked through the fiery danger slowly. I kept my eyes firmly fixed on Conner;s tail, afraid I might be separated from the group if I looked away. Our footsteps were completely silent. Then out the blue I heard Charles gasp.

"What is it?"

"What's wrong?"

"What happened?"

Questions shot into the smoky air. Finally I decided to take charge. "Charles?" I called out. "What happened?"

What Charles said next filled me with dread.

"It's a dead end!"
