3. Saved

I woke up to the sound of someone trying to open the door. Jae's body was still on top of me. His blood was all over my shirt. I carefully pushed him off and grabbed the crowbar.

I crept to the top of the stairs, but before I could take a step down, the door opened. I looked into the mirror that was facing the door. It wasn't a Lurker that broke in, but two boys. One of them looked to be around my age. He had a white bandana covering the bottom half of his face. The other looked a lot less threatening. He seemed surprisingly calm for what was going on with the world.

They walked inside and I ran back into Jae's room. I hid in the closet and pulled a few blankets over myself. I heard them opening cabinets and throwing things into bags.

"This place is loaded!" One of them yelled. "Maru, go check upstairs for more."

I heard one of them come upstairs and into the room I was in. I peeked through a crack in the door and saw him. He stopped in his tracks when he saw Jae's body.

"Siwoo! Come look at this!" He called. The elder came up. "It looks like someone was living here."

"It looks fresh, too."

"It doesn't look like he was the one holding the gun. Someone else must be here."

"Look around. We can't risk someone following us back to camp." He left and the other, whose name I now know is Maru, stayed behind.

He looked under the bed and behind the chairs. I accidentally moved my foot and it made a small noise. He looked in my direction and walked over. I pulled the blankets higher over my face. He opened the door and I tensed up. I felt a tug on the hem of the blanket.

"Maru, come on. T.K's waiting."

He took the blanket and I froze. I was relieved when I noticed he didn't see me.

They left the house. I heard a car start and drive off. I waited a few minutes before crawling out of the closet. When I saw Jae's body, I started crying again. I thought about what he said yesterday. Nothing is going to fix this. Death is the only way out.

I went to get the gun, but it was gone. When I went downstairs, I saw that everything was gone. They took everything. The only thing that's left was the crowbar, but there's no way I could end my life with that. I could jump off of a building, but none of them here are tall enough.

I came down to the conclusion that there is only one sure way to meet certain death. It's not the most pleasant way to go, but there's no other way.

"Don't do it," a voice said.

"J-Jae?" I choked out. I looked around to try and see him, but I couldn't.

"You promised me you'd try to survive. For me. For Umma, Appa and Miyoung."

"I can't. I'm all alone."

"Hana, listen to your brother," another voice chimed in.

"Umma?" That's it. I've gone crazy. "This isn't happening. You're not real!" I ran out of the house and into the street.

I went back to the center of town and sat in the middle of the street. It took a while, but what I wanted finally came. A Lurker slowly headed in my direction. I smiled slightly at this. Finally, I'm going to be with my family.

"Hana... You don't want to do this. It's not going to kill you. It's just going to make you one of them. You'll be trapped here," Jae's voice came back.

"B-but it wouldn't be me. I would be gone..."

"Listen to me. You can't do this. Don't break our promise, Hannie."

I thought it over and realized it was a bad idea. But it was too late. I spent too much time thinking and not enough running. The Lurker was right in front of me. Before I could get up, it fell on top of me, like the other did to Jae, except I had nothing to protect myself with. I had my feet pushed up against its chest, but I couldn't push it off. It kept swinging its arms at me and scratched me a few times. There's no use in trying. No one is left to help.

I kept trying to push it off, but my attempts were unavailing. Just as I was about to give up, the familiar sound of a car came. Everything was moving so fast. I think the Lurker got shot in the head with an arrow. I felt strong arms pull me up off of the ground. I didn't see who it was. They put me in the back of their car and drove off.

"Are you okay?" One of them asked. I recognized him as the boy with the bandana, but he had taken it off. "You didn't get bit, did you?"

I shook my head. "I don't think so... The scratches... Do they turn you?" I asked nervously.

"No, they don't. We've been scratched plenty of times to know that," he answered. "I'm Maru by the way. The one in the front is Siwoo and T.K is driving. We have three others at camp. Do you have anywhere to stay? By the looks of things, it seems like you don't even have anything to protect yourself."

"No. I'm all alone."

"Do you want to stay with us? We can keep you safe. We have lots of weapons."

"Maru..." Siwoo said. "You know Rome doesn't want us bringing people in."

"But she has nothing. She almost got killed out there."

"Yeah, but we don't know anything about her. She could've been sent out there by her group so she could steal from us."

"We'll let Rome decide," T.K commented.

The rest of the ride was in complete silence. Maru leaned against the window and was twiddling his thumbs. He occasionally took a quick glance at me, but for only a second.

We finally arrived at a small summer camp. It was probably only meant for a small group, as there were only three cabins. There was a lake and a small beach behind them. There was also a basketball court that could also be used for tennis. Around the camp was a tall fence, about thirty feet high. This seems like a safe place to stay.

T.K pulled the car in through the gates. We got out of the car and Maru went into the first cabin. He came back outside with another boyThat's the one who saved Jae and I! I found him, Jae. Just like you told me to.

"Rome, we found her in the middle of the street getting attacked by one of them. She claims she's all alone. Can she stay with us? Please?" Maru begged. His eyes looked like a puppy's begging for table scraps.

"She's not alone," Rome scoffed. "I saved her and some boy from one just yesterday."

"She said she's all alone."

"You know how people are nowadays. They lie. Only so they can surv-"

"He's dead," I interrupted. "He was bitten from that Lurker you killed."

"And why would we believe that?" Rome retorted.

"Maru and Siwoo saw his body. Ask them."

"What do you mean? We only saw one body today," Maru puzzled. His eyes widened when he realized what I meant. "Oh.. I'm so sorry."

"How do you know we saw?" Siwoo questioned.

"I was hiding in the closet," I confessed.

"I thought I heard something in there," Maru chuckled nervously, trying to lighten the mood. "Sorry we took your stuff..."

"Was there anyone else in the house with you?" Rome asked.

"No. Like they said, I'm all alone."

"So? Can she stay?" Maru asked hopefully.

Rome replied with a stern voice, "Sure, as long as she doesn't get out of our sight. I still don't trust her."

"Thank you," I said softly.

"It's getting late. We should get some rest. Maru, since you wanted her to stay so bad, she's your responsibility," Rome ordered.

"Alright. Come on," Maru said and grabbed me by the hand. We went into one if the cabins. "You can have the top bunk. No one's using it. Oh, and I never got your name."

"It's Hana," I said while climbing the ladder to the bed.

"Hana... What a pretty name."
