Letters Best Unread (A Niall Horan Love Story)

Everybody is worried about Niall Horan. He gets loads of hate and insults everyday, and everyone's worried that it's getting worse to him than the others. Niall thinks he's fine, but agrees to go to the doctor. The doctor has him write pretend letters to a fake address. No one expected for the address to be real. No one expected Niall's letters to reach her. She got the letters that no one was supposed to get, and she read every single emotion and pain he wrote about. Somehow she fell in love with him.

7. Seven.

“ Hey Ni, how’ve you been?”

Niall tried not to make his sigh too evident. He had expected the boys to check in on him sometime, but now? He had just finished eating dinner while watching a game of football and was about to go to bed. He knew answering the phone would be a bad idea. He wanted to sleep and get to the next day to write a letter at the doctors. Niall never thought the day would come where he would want to go, but he did. Well, he hated the doctor herself, he just wanted to write. If she never showed up those meetings would be bearable. Or maybe he was just excited because he thought he had found a name for the imaginary person. It was absolutely sappy, but he liked it well enough.

Niall blinked himself out of his thoughts. He never usually thought too hardly about anything, but now these letters were itching into his brain too. He didn’t like all of these thoughts in him. He was usually so carefree,  but things had changed.

“Sorry, but uh - I’ve been good, how about you?”

On the other end of the phone. Liam hated how formal this conversation seemed to be. He missed the old Niall. He missed the always eating, always laughing, carefree kid who just love to sing. But all those girls had to go and bring him down. They didn’t know what they caused.

“Everything’s amazing over here. We’ve just been relaxing and swimming. No paps at all.” Liam waited for Niall but all he received was a grunt. He sighed, “But what about you? There has to be more than just good. How is the doctor?”

Niall didn’t want Liam bringing up the doctor. He absolutely loathed her, but he knew Liam just wanted him talking. Maybe if he talked long enough about how much he hated her Liam would go away. Not that he hated Liam because he didn’t , but – oh the hell with it. Niall wanted Liam to stop bugging him.

“She’s old and wrinkly and I hate her. She is always watching me and bugging me and I hate it there.”

Niall heard Liam sigh into the phone. Good, he thought. Liam should know how much he hated it there. How would he feel if he was in Niall’s place? He would hate it as well. No one understands.

“C’mon Nialler, She can’t be that horrible. It’s her job to ask you questions. What does she even have you do? Just talk about feelings or what?”

Niall debated on whether he should tell Liam about the letters or not. Would he want to know what Niall wrote about? What he felt? What hurt? It was annoying enough to have the doctor down his throat about how he felt, but having Liam as well? Definitely not.

“Yeah, that’s pretty much it.”

“And is this helping you? Are you, you know, forgetting about everything? You don’t feel as bad, right?”

Niall rubbed his eyes tiredly. He really, really didn’t want to be having this conversation right now. It was nearly midnight and he was tired. What had made Liam decide to call him now of all times, He wasn’t even prepared. And of course this lady wasn’t helping him. He wanted to never think about what those girls said to him ever again, but this doctor made him relive every single word that had been typed, and even said to him. It hurt a lot worse. Niall figured lying was the best thing to do.

“Yeah, it’s nice to just talk everything out. I reckon I’ll be out of here really soon.”

Liam smiled on the other end of the link, completely oblivious to the lying, “Really? That’s great! Then you can enjoy the break and we’re all off to America again.”

Niall really didn’t want to take part in any more conversation, so he let out a big yawn and sighed really loud. “ Hey, I think I’m gonna go to bed. I’ll talk to you soon.”

Liam let out another sigh, “Love ya, Nialler.”

This made Niall smile. He knew all the boys loved him, but to be reminded of this was just comforting.

“Love ya too, Liam. Night!”

And Niall hung up without waiting for an answer for he had just thought up an even better name for his imaginary person getting those letters. It was even sappier than the first, but he liked the name – it was a nickname – but it was something and Niall liked it.

Jumping into bed, Niall turned off the lights and sat in silence for a bit with the sound of his breathing – the only sound in room. And this made Niall feel even lonelier than he already was.
