Here's To The Pain

Pain, or more specifically, grief, has five stages. They look different on all of us, but there are always five - denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. This story gives a small glimpse about how to deal with pain.

8. The Confession

Neo waves his hand at Addison as he exits his History class and walks towards her. “Where were you? I didn’t see you in the bus, I was looking for you,” says Neo. “I was a bit late. Got caught in some trouble at home, that’s all, you know,” says Addison. Neo immediately gets it and doesn’t continue the topic.

As they both enter their English classroom, Addison trips on a wire which comes out of nowhere, and is about to fall, when Neo swiftly takes her hand and rescues her dear bones from breaking. Some initiated laughs are stopped immediately.

Someone’s prank has failed. Regina George’s face makes that horrifying expression again, the expression when she feels defeated. Addison sees Neo going straight towards Regina, but surprisingly, with a cool expression he says to her, “I pity you.”

As Addison and Neo exit the school’s wooden doors, Neo pulls Addison aside and takes out a silver bracelet with a golden dove from his bag.

“You left this on the table at the Inn,” says Neo, handing the bracelet over to Addison. “Oh thank god! I was looking for it everywhere! This bracelet is way too valuable,” says Addison, holding out her hand to Neo to let him put the bracelet on.

As Neo moves closer to put the bracelet around Addison’s wrist, he feels her warm breath on his face. He looks into her eyes, she looks into his’. This is it, he thinks. This is the right time to tell this fascinating girl my feelings. “Addison, I really like you,” he says. They come closer, closer and closer…

Just when their lips are going to meet, Addison pushes Neo away from her. “I am sorry Neo, I can’t. I just don’t have time for love in life. We can still be friends,” she says. “I really am sorry, Neo.”

“It’s okay Addison, you have always fascinated me and will continue to do so, I know it,” he says giving her a smile, although he feels his heart sink. “Of course, we can be friends,” he says, trying to hide the pain.

“Great! Bye,” says Addison, walking away.

She’s going. The fascinating girl, whom he really wanted to be with forever, is going away. Neo looks at her longingly, feeling the pain absorbing him. He doesn’t try to fight it. Well, if you think, it’s not like she’s really going anywhere. She is right here, with him, as his friend. That one look, one look of her smiling is enough.
