Pale Blue Eyes

Cara's just your average 19 year old girl- Irish, 19 year old girl to be exact. She's lived in Belfast all her life, until one day, she receives tragic news of her grandmother's passing over in Dublin, Mullingar. Moving houses is always hard... Moving cities is even harder. But the real worry is, will Cara cope with all this change?

4. All Around Mullingar

I've been roaming around, I was looking down at all I see
Painted faces fill the places I can't reach
You know that I could use somebody
You know that I could use somebody

Someone like you and all you know and how you speak
Countless lovers under cover of the street
You know that I could use somebody
You know that I could use somebody
Someone like you”

I slammed my hand onto the alarm clock, annoyed at my sudden interruption of sleep. “Does no one want me to sleep around here?” I grumbled to myself, probably sounding like some old lady. I opened up my curtains, letting in the light. Oh look, it’s Niall. I waved smiling, then realized he was only in his sweats, torso bare as fudge.

Oh my god he was fit… His- his abs. I almost fainted. He smiled back and waved, before walking off somewhere, probably for breakfast. The second he left, I collapsed onto the bed. My legs just couldn’t take the sexiness of the one and only Niall Horan. Better known as my neighbor.

“Cara there’s peanut butter pancakes!” I heard dad call from downstairs. The sweet aroma of peanut butter suddenly hitting my nose like a brick. Gosh I must be starving. I scrambled down the stairs, almost tripping over my feet a few times in the process, before finally arriving in the sweet haven I like to call the kitchen.

“Gimme gimme gimme!” I yelled grabbing taking the plate off the counter, “Mineeee!” I hissed, doing the impression of that creepy thing in Lord of The Rings. That movie never failed to creep the shit outta me. Dad and Hunter both gave me weird looks before shrugging at each other and getting on with whatever they were doing. Well okay then.

After gobbling down what I think was my seventh pancake, I put my plate into the dishwasher then skipped happily back to my room. Oh the sweet comforts of my not-so-familiar room. “Oh hey Niall- Wait, what the fuck?!” I screamed as I eyed the blonde haired cutie who stood sheepishly in the middle of my room.

“Oh- hey Cara.” My heart nearly died at the sound of my name on his tongue. Stop it you dimwit. “Er, I jumped across and onto your balcony…” He explained, rubbing the back of his neck. WAIT HE DID WHAT NOW?

“You jumped. You seriously jumped?” I asked, eyeing him once more just incase I was dreaming. He nodded proudly, plopping himself comfortably onto my unmade bed. “Yes please, go ahead and get comfortable.” I chuckled, sarcasm dripping from every word.

“Well, if you say so!” He giggled, kicking his shoes off and lying comfortably across the span of my bed. He looked so cute, I just wanted to jump on him and- wait, what?

“You’re an idiot you know that?” I jested, smiling softly at him. He just shrugged and smiled, opening his arms wide. He was gesturing for me to go and hug him, which I gladly complied. I snuggled close to him, his head burying itself deep into my shoulder. This was why I absolutely loved hugging Niall.

“So miss McCarthy, where would you like to go see today?” He spoke, grinning wider with every word. If he smiled any wider his face would break. “How about some ice cream?” My eyes widened at the mention of the sweet creamy delight.

“Sounds good. But do you think it could be as delightful as the ice cream back in Belfast?” I teased, pulling us down so we were lying, face to face.

“Better.” He stated proudly, tucking a stray piece of hair that had fallen onto my face. “Maybe you should get ready?” His breath was hot against my face. Oh what this boy did to me…

“Maybe.” I chuckled, slowly getting up. “And maybe you should jump back over to your balcony before my mum decides to question how you got over here without using the front door.” I winked, gently pulling him up as I got to my feet. Epic fail. I ended up falling back down… On top of Niall.

I blushed a deep scarlet red as I scrambled to get off him, trying to get to my feet. “Sorry.” I mumbled, sticking my hand out for him to grab. He did so, pushing himself off the bed this time.

“Nah it’s my fault. Well I’ll see you in, say, 20 minutes?” He smiled, then kissed my cheek, strolling out onto my balcony. How weird that looked, only I will know. My finger absentmindedly grazed upon my cheek. It was still slightly warm from his soft lips coming in contact with it. Girl you’ve got it bad…

I quickly took off my pajamas, chucking them into the hamper whilst I stepped into the shower, letting the warm water douse me in bliss. I sighed as I turned the water off, stepping out and wrapping my body in my purple towel. I skipped out happily, staying within my closet walls incase Mr. Horan decided to jump balconies again.

I dried myself off, slipping on a light blue long-sleeved shirt, which had a penguin on it, then put on my dark denim jeans. Tying my hair up into a ponytail, I slipped on some grey uggs, then grabbed my phone and slipped it into my back pocket, along with a £50 note.

To: Nialler

I’m on my way down to the door, meet me at the end of the driveway. We'll take my car :) xx

I bid my parents goodbye, then punched Hunter in the shoulder and ran out the door, stopping at the end of the pathway. As I waited, I decided to take in my surroundings a little more. There were around 8 houses on our lane, the one at the very end being Grandpa's. In front of our house was a huge patch of trees, most probably being a park. If I looked past grandpa's house, I could just about make out the town... I think?

It was a good 3 minutes before Niall came skipping out, a huge smile on his face. "Well don't you look dapper." I winked, examining what he wore. Chinos, a red polo top, and a champagne hooded blazer. He gave me a hug, kissing my cheek as I pulled away. I swear my heart was doing a marathon.

"Thank you Cara.” He grinned cheekily at me. “I likey the penguin love.” He commented, making me smile widely. “Now come on. How’s about that ice cream eh?” Then he grabbed my arm, interlocking at our elbows. We walked for a bit before starting to talk.

“I really like it here. The air’s not too cold, and not too hot. Unlike Belfast, your weather’s absolutely appealing.” I grinned, leaning a little into his side. “I actually want to stay.” I mumbled, mostly to myself. Or maybe you want to stay for Niall. Stop lying. Unf. I had mentally punched myself in the face.

“I’m glad. I don’t think I’d be too ecstatic if you left.” I sighed sadly, looking at me from the corner of his eye. “Oh- we’re here!” His excitement quickly reappeared, tugging on my hand to drag me into the little store.

“Which is your favorite?” I asked Niall who was just looking at me, his eyes seemed to be shining a little brighter than usual. “What? Do I have something on my face?” I quickly covered my face, hoping to hide whatever was on it.

“No no, it’s just that- you’re really pretty.” He blushed, pulling my arms away. A smile crawled onto my face as my cheeks flushed furiously. “But anyway, the apple pie gelato is the bomb!” He grinned, doing all sorts of arm gestures.

“Then that’s what I’ll get.” I told him, bumping his hip with mine. “You know Niall? You’re probably one of the sweetest guys I know.” I admitted, suddenly finding my shoes awfully interesting.

"That's actually good to know." He stated, probably smiling like a fool. Oh dear god please tell me his feelings are mutual. Once we got our cones of ice cream, I held mine in my right hand whilst Niall slyly slipped his hand into my left, intertwining them together. I looked down and smiled at our hands.

We spent the rest of the day at a local carnival, riding every single thing we could think of.

From: Grandda

Hey sweetheart, would you like to come over for some tea? Your mum told me you were out with a friend. Would you like to bring him too?

I smile and turned to Niall who was currently stuffing his face with cotton candy. "What?" He questioned, cotton candy sticking to sides of his face.

"My grandpa wants to know if you'd like to go for tea with us... Now?" I asked, wiping his mouth with my thumb. He mumbled a thanks before putting on his adorable thinking face.

"Okay sure!" He beamed, taking my hand, letting me lead the way. "You're excited aren't you?" He chuckled trying to keep up.

"I am! Grandda's going to love you!" I squealed, jumping around. “He’s really nice, fun to be around, and well, just generally awesome. He’s deaf though…” I added, trailing off at the end. He looked shocked for a moment, before smiling widely. “I don’t suppose you know sign language do you?” I joked, though there was a glint of hope in my voice.

“What if I told you… I did?” I wasn’t sure if he was joking, until he really started to sign. *I hope my signing isn’t that bad… Is it?* Gosh does this boy know everything? It’s like he’s a freaking robot!

*No, no! You’re actually doing pretty well! My granddad is definitely going to like you now.* I signed to him, a little slower so he could read at a pace. “Now enough with the hands, time to let you meet my pappy!” I cheered, pulling him down the walkway and into grandda’s house.

I pressed the ‘bell’ that made a light flash on the inside of the house so that grandda would know we’re here. That’s the alternative of a doorbell for a deaf person. Soon he came running in from the kitchen, flustered yet with a smile. *Well hello there young chap! I’m Cara’s granddaddy, but you can call me Michael yeah?*

You could tell Niall was struggling to understand, but eventually he caught on. *Hi! I’m Niall. It’s very nice to meet you sir!* he signed back, taking my grandda’s hand in a handshake. *Cara’s talked so much about you. You sound like a superhero* Granddad’s smile grew wider as he stared in awe.

*I see you’ve found yourself a signing boyfriend! Very nice choice Cara, honey.* My eyes grew wide as I blushed furiously towards the floor.

*We’re not dating Pap, we’re just friends.* I assured him, hoping he’d take me seriously.

*Maybe not yet, but soon. Anyway! Shall we have some tea?* He quickly changed the subject, knowing he’d won the ‘argument’. I looked at Niall for the first time since we came, and his cheeks seemed to be lightly flushed as well.

We sat ‘talking’ about the most random things, just laughing at everything and anything we could think of. Niall and grandda were getting along extremely well, and I was starting the think I should have brought Niall here ages ago.

*Thank you so much for the tea Michael. It was an absolute pleasure meeting you.* Niall grinned, giving my pappy a hug.

*It was lovely to meet you too Niall. And it was lovely seeing you again Cara.* He gushed, giving me a hug too.

*Bye grandda!* Then we were off on our way back to our houses. The walk back to the house was pretty quiet other than the occasional jokes Niall would pull whilst things passed us. I must admit it definitely wasn’t an awkward silence. It was actually comfortable.

“He really liked you.” I grinned, swinging our intertwined hands back and forth. “And I’m really glad you knew sign language too. It would have been exhausting to translate between the two of you.” I added, leaning into his side.

“Phew! I was super scared he wasn’t going to like me… And I know what you mean. I had a deaf friend before. I was the only one who could sign in our little group so I was like a translator. It was probably even more tiring than maths itself.” He told me, chuckling lightly to himself.

“You know, when I first arrived here in Mullingar, I thought it was going to be hell living here… But meeting you has definitely changed my perspective of staying here.” I admitted, suddenly feeling the need to be sentimental.

“Really? Well I’m honored to be the reason you want to stay.” He said, squeezing my hand.

“Not to be rude or anything, because I’m really glad you are, but why are you so nice to me? I’ve never met you before, yet we act like we’ve known each other for years…” I asked, trying not to sound too blunt.

“I don’t know actually. But, like. I know that you’re different, and I guess I like that. You’re nicer, funnier, more out going, less shy, wayyy more hungier, and much prettier than a lot of the girls around here in Mullingar. I like different.” He explained, smiling softly at me.

“Oh so now I’m different?” I joked, laughing a little at how I compared myself to a mentally impared person…

“No not like that! I mean, you’re original. Yeah, you’re original.” He corrected, laughing lightly. Then he paused, looking at my intently. I could’ve sworn he was debating whether to kiss me or not, but then he turned his head away, looking straight ahead. I sighed internally, actually hoping he was going to kiss me.

Wait what? No you didn’t. Sighh. His eyes squinted a little as a cold breeze blew into us, causing me to shiver unattractively. Ew what is wrong with you, you dimwit. Well I’m sorry. Geez.

“What are you sorry about?” Niall asked, a confused expression on his cute face. Did I just say cute? Pffffft. I must be loosing my mind.

“Er… I said that aloud didn’t I? Heh, well sorry. Urm, I was just thinking to myself ‘is all.” I answered, chuckling a little.

“Yeah, yeah you did.” He giggled, smirking lightly at me, “Oh I do that all the time! No biggy.” I smiled and held onto his hand, feeling the warmth suddenly shoot throughout my body. How on earth did he have this kind of effect on me?

“I’ll see you tomorrow, school right?” I confirmed, praying we went to the same school. Hey, famous people need education too okay. He nodded, walking backwards towards his house so he could still see me. “Show me around?” I called which he replied with two thumbs up, before tripping on his front door step.

“I’M OKAY!” He shouted, quickly getting up and brushing his clothes off. “Bye!” He waved, his cheeks tinted red.

I waved back, then stepped into the warmth of this new home, suddenly finding it awfully cozy. I’ve become so comfortable with this home here so quickly… And what does that say about me? Do you even miss Belfast anymore? Not some much the place… But I guess more the people than the home.

“Hey hun, how was your day?” Mum smiled, a knowing look across her face. I could honestly say, my mum is closer to me than Alana and Regan are… I could tell her anything. Anything.

“I think I might like him… Is that bad?” Her smile instantly widened as she put the salad mixer down.

“Of course not! Niall is probably one of the cutest Irish lad I’ve ever met baby girl. He’s also a gentleman. I wouldn’t mind you dating him.” She winked, starting to mix the salad again. My cheeks instantly heated up at the mention of Niall and I dating. Could it actually happen? Would he actually like me that way?

“Mum! We’re not dating!” I shot back, trying not to sound disappointed. “Yet…” I whispered. “Anway, I’ll talk to you later. I have to get ready for my first day at school tomorrow!” I said quickly before bolting up the stairs, skipping steps here and there.

I packed all my necessary shitz into my bag, slipping in my sketchbook and lyrics book. Yes I know it’s weird to have a lyrics book, but I just find it calming to put my thought onto a piece of paper… With rhythm.

We had music for first period tomorrow, so this was going to be interesting.

I waved goodnight to Niall through the balcony windows before drawing the curtains, crawling under the comforts of my blanket. I’m so tired…
