Everything Has a Happy Ending

Savannah was just a normal 14 year old girl living in Houston, Texas. But a shooting in her neighborhood one night can change everything. Her parents and older siblings died in the shooting. Her younger 4 year old sister, DJ, was seen taken away that night. Savannah wanted to do anything she could to get her back. She woke up the next morning with and soon becomes a part of a new family, who helps her find DJ. But Savannah thinks that her life has no meaning anymore.

4. The Hospital Visit

Savannah's POV

I woke up in a comfy, yet different bed than I'm used to. I feel the pillows and sheets. They're soo much softer than mine! I blink a couple times and then jolt up. Was last night real? Or just a dream? I look around and I could tell that I'm in a hotel room. Strange, I don't remember going on vacation. Across the room there was a mirror, and I stared at my reflection. I was a mess. My hair was everywhere, and my arms were dirty. My white One Direction shirt had spots of dirt on it. I pulled my knees to my chest and cried. Last night was real. I lost everything. My house. My family. Mom and Daddy died. Alyssa died. Josh di-  Josh. I jump off the bed and ran out of the room. "Josh!"

I bumped into someone, someone about the same size as Josh. My ankle started throbbing in pain.

"Where's Josh?" I could barely see the person in front of me through my tears. He looked awfully familiar though.

"Who?" he asked me. That voice was familiar too, but it wasn't Josh's.

"Josh! My brother! The ambulance took him! He's still alive! And D.J.! Someone kidnapped her! I need to call the police! And take me to the hospital!" I cried and the guy hugged me. Someone else, whose voice sounded familiar too, walked up to us and asked the boy who was hugging me, "Is she okay?"

"Please, please take me to the hospital. I want to see Josh. Now." I wiped the tears away from my eyes. I looked at the faces of the boys.

Louis Tomlinson.

Zayn Malik.

"You're Louis and Zayn. And you're Eleanor." I pointed to the extremely gorgeous girl walking up to her boyfriend.

They nodded slightly.

"How did I get here?" I whispered.

"Louis and I found you on the sidewalk sleeping last night during the bombing." Eleanor said.

"Can you take me to the hospital? Please? And call the police. Someone took my younger sister away." the tears were coming back. And now was no time to fan girl.

They nodded. "Paul! We're going to the hospital!"

Eleanor came up and hugged me. "It's going to be okay, sweetie. What's your name?"

"Savannah." I choked out through my tears.

"Come on Savannah, let's go to the hospital." I tried to take a step but then my ankle hurt more.

"Are you okay?" Eleanor asked me.

"Yeah, it's just that my ankle hurts."
"Come on, we'll get you checked out at the hospital. Let me get an ice pack first."

"Thanks El."

The four of us got in a car and Louis drove us to the hospital. Eleanor sat with me in the back and calmed me down a bit. "What happened last night?" she asked me.

I told her everything, from Alyssa coming home for the weekend, to the fire and bombs, to seeing Josh all burned up, to see my parents and sister dead, and to D.J. missing and me running after the white van. By the end of the story, Eleanor was crying too.

An half an hour later, we finally got to the hospital. After Louis parked and turned off the car, I opened the door and ran out. Yes, I was in my pajamas, and I didn't care. Yes, my ankle could be broken and killing me, but I didn't care. I ran through the front doors and all the way to the front desk. I bumped into a few people on the way, but I didn't care.

"Josh Johns." I was out of breath and my ankle hurt ten times more.

"Excuse me miss?" the front lady looked at me through her glasses.

"Josh Johns. Which room is he in?"

"I’m sorry but no visitors are aloud to see him. He's in critical condition."
"I'm his sister! Where is he! I need to talk to him!"

"His sister? Alyssa Johns died last night honey."

"My name is Savannah Johns! I’m also his sister! I need to see him!" I yelled at her.

"You can't see him now miss. I'm sorry. You're welcome to wait in the waiting room if you'd like." she looked at me and then back to her computer screen. I didn't care. As hard as it was, I ignored my ankle and ran through the waiting room and into one of the hallways. I limped passed one of the doors that read "Dr. Adams, MD."

I opened the door to see a middle aged doctor sitting in his chair. Maybe he could help me out. I walked up to his desk.

"Please. Josh Johns. Where is he?" I cried.

"Who?" he looked at me.

"Josh Johns."

"I'm sorry, but-" no, he wasn't going to say the same thing the front desk lady told me.

"Please! I NEED to see him! He's my bro-"

"What's your name?" he asked me.

"Savannah. Savannah Johns. Please. I'm his sister. I need to see him."

He stood up and lead me to the fourth floor. We finally got to the end of the hallway. He pointed to the room. "He's in critical condition. Most likely not to survive."
"How long?" I cried harder. What am I supposed to do now?

"Lucky to last a few more days. I'm sorry." He gave me a quick hug and then left to do his work. I slowly opened the door of the room and limped in. I stood there for a minute and examined my brother's almost dead body. Josh's skin was burnt badly. It was the worst sight I have ever seen him in.

"Josh?" I whispered and sat next to his burnt body on the bed. I took his hand in mine that wasn't burnt as badly as the rest of his body.

"Savannah?" his body moved a little and faced me. He smiled.

"Josh." I cried and hugged him lightly. His arm moved slowly and played with my hair.

"It's going to be okay Savannah."

"No! It's not! Nothing's going to be okay! Mom and Daddy are dead. Alyssa's dead. It's just us two. And you might not even live."

He held me and rubbed my back for a minute.

"Where's D.J.?" he asked me.

I didn't move. I just cried even harder.

"I don't know Josh, I don't know. She was with me one second and then the next, she was gone. I followed a van that I think took her, but I don't know, I lost her. How am I supposed to find her now?"

"Shhh. Everything is going to be okay. We'll find her. I heard the doctor talking on the phone. I think he was contacting the police. I told him about you two." he tried to calm me down.

"Don't die Josh, don't die. I know you can live. You're strong. I know it. I don't want to loose you either." he hugged me tighter.

"I'll try not to. I'll do my best to live."

We heard commotion outside the room and someone knocked on the door. We both turned to look at the three people who took me in their hotel room last night and brought me here in the morning. There was also a nurse who soon left us alone.

"Hey! I know you two!" Josh pointed to Zayn and Louis. "You're the ones on Savannah's shirt!" he then pointed at my shirt. The boys nodded.

"Wait, how did you guys end up meeting?" Josh put on his confused look, and let me tell you, it's priceless.

Louis ended up explaining the whole story to him of how he found me sleeping on the sidewalk last night.

"Savannah, how's your ankle?" Zayn asks me.

I look at it. It was purple and blue.

"Um, it's not hurting now."

"Here, put this on." Eleanor gave me the ice pack. "We need to check that out later."

After a bit, the three of them left Josh and I alone. "Josh, if you die, what am I going to do? And what if I don't find D.J.?"

He looked at me. "I don't know Savannah." he patted the spot next to him on the bed. I got up and laid next to him. "Did you tell them about D.J.?" he asked me.

I didn't answer him. I just stared at the white wall across the room.

"Savannah, it's okay. Everything is going to turn out okay."

I still didn't move.

"But hey, you did meet two of the loves of your life."

That made me smile.

"Did they see you fan girl yet?" he joked.

I shook my head. "No."

"That's a relief for them." he smirked.

"Shut up." I laughed.

We sat in quiet for a few minutes. I got out of his bed.

"Where are you going?"

"I need to ask them something."

I walked outside to find Zayn, Eleanor, and Louis sitting right outside the room. Zayn and Louis were on their phones, and Eleanor was fiddling with her purse.

"Is everything alright?" Zayn looked up.

I nodded. "I wanted to ask you guys if you could call the police and tell them about D.J."

Louis gave me a small smile. "We already called them Savannah."

"Thank you." I hugged them.

I walked back in the room.

"What about D.J.? What if we don't find her? It's all my fault Josh."

"Hey, it's not your fault. Don't worry the police will find her."
"But she's just four. She doesn't know what to do. She's probably freaking out right now. And she'll probably hate me forever."

"No she won't, you're her favorite out of the three of us."

"Hey Savannah. Everything is going to be okay."
"What if," I started. "What if you don't make it? What am I going to do?"

He looked at me, and he looked like he was going to cry. All he did was rubbed my back and tried to calm me down. None of us said a word for ten minutes.

"What happened to your ankle?"

I shrugged. "I don't know. I tripped over something last night."
"You should go check that out."

I nodded. "I'll do it later."
"Go do it now, take the girl that was with them and check it out."

"Yeah." he nodded.

I stood up and asked Eleanor to come with me to check my ankle out.

An hour later, my leg was casted in a pink cast. Eleanor asked me to sign it, and I happily said yes. The nurse told me what I can do with my cast and all those things, and she gave me some forms to sign and to see when my next appointment will be. She gave me crutches and Eleanor and I headed back to Josh's room.

She opened the door for me and I walked in and sat down on the chair next to the  bed. Louis and Zayn walked out the room. I guess Josh wanted to talk to me about something.

"What happened?"

"I broke my ankle."

"Can I sign it?"

"If you have a sharpie."

"Uh, look around the room. Wait, there's one at the counter over there."

I limped to the counter and grabbed the sharpie.  I limped back to the bed and lifted my leg on his bed. It took him almost three minutes to finish signing the cast.

"What's taking you so long?"

"Shh. I'm almost done." he shushed me.

"There." he closed the sharpie. I read his message on my cast. It was a stick figure of him holding a sign that said "Get better Nana!" and next to it he wrote, "I love you sissy, Joshie."

"Aw, I love you to Josh."

"Um, I want to talk to you about something."

I looked at him. He pushed himself up, and by his face I could tell it hurt him to move, even a little bit.

"About Mom and Dad, and Alyssa." he looked at me. "What about the funerals?"

The funerals. I didn't even think about it. I don't know how to plan a funeral.

I shrugged. "What are we going to do?"

He thought for a minute. "I say first we find D.J. and make sure she's safe."

"But the doctor's said that you might not last till the end of the we-."

"I don't care what the doctors say. I'll try to make it through. For you."
I smiled.

"What if we never find D.J. Daddy told me to watch her. Then she's gone." my eyes got water for the millionth time that day.

"We'll find her Savannah, don't worry."

"Do they have a will?"

Josh shrugged. "I don't know. I guess we can ask someone who can help us with that."

An hour later, we heard the door knock. We turned around and saw the doctor walking in with a sheriff.

"Josh and Savannah Johns?"

We nodded.

"First I want to express my condolences to you two."

"Thank you." I whispered.

The Sheriff talked to us about the funeral and all that stuff. He told us he'll give us a lawyer to help us figure out all this stuff. I asked him about D.J., and he told me that they are on the lookout. I explained to him about the white van zooming away.

The doctor nodded and talked to me outside while the lawyer talked Josh.

"Do you have any place to stay for the night? We think it's best if you don't stay at the hospital."

I shrugged. "I don't know."

"She could stay with us." I turned around to see Louis and Eleanor. They were still here?

The doctor nodded. "Good. When the lawyer is done talking with Josh, you can say bye to him."

"Can I come back in the morning?"

The doctor shook his head. "Tomorrow morning we'll be running some tests on him."

"But you said he'd be lucky to live through the week. I want to be here till he dies. If he dies." It hurt me to even think of him dead.

"I’m sorry Savannah but no visitors in the morning. You can come in the afternoon. I think we'll be done by then."

I wiped the tears from my eyes and leaned the wall and through my crutches on the ground. I sat down on the floor. I put my good knee to my chest and cried. Eleanor came and sat next to me and rubbed my back.

The lawyer finally opened the door and Eleanor helped me up. I walked back in the room. I went up to Josh and hugged him lightly.

"Bye Josh."

"It'll be okay, okay?"

I nodded even though I didn't believe him.

"See you tomorrow Savannah."

I waved and headed out the hospital, praying it won't be the last time I see him.
