6. Moving On

Savannah's POV

"It's the hospital." Louis looked straight at me.

I stood up and walked to the door. I opened it and walked out, my leg hurting even more, but a hand grabbed me and stopped me.

"It's the hospital Louis! That means it's Josh!" I choked out.

"I know, Savannah, I know. Give us two minutes. Okay?"

I nodded slowly, not wanting to wait the two minutes. Liam walked up to me and gave me my crutches.

"Almost forgot those. Come on, let's beat them to the car." he left the door a bit opened.  We went down the empty elevator and walked to the car. He opened the car door for me and helped me in. We saw Louis and Eleanor running towards the car. Louis got in the drivers seat and Eleanor got in the back next to me.

"Is he still alive?" I asked Louis.

Louis kept quiet for a few seconds. He nodded slightly.

"That's what the doctors told me, but they told me something is going on, they didn't give me the details yet."

Yes. Josh is still alive. That means he can do it. He can do it. I know he can. For the rest of the car ride to the hospital, we kept silent. The traffic wasn't as bad, so we got to the hospital sooner than I expected.

Louis dropped me and Eleanor at the front entrance, and he and Liam went to park the car. Eleanor and I walked in, heading straight towards the front desk. Thank goodness it was a different lady than this morning. I didn't want to have dealt with her. We got closer the front desk and realized she was talking to somebody else.

"Come on El, we don't have to ask. I don't want to wait. I know where his room is."

She nodded and we headed towards the elevator. It felt like forever for the elevator door to open on fourth floor. I tried to go fast in these crutches, but I did my best. I got to the door of his room. I looked in the window and saw two nurses fixing the machines around him. My eyes roamed around the room to Josh's almost lifeless body on the bed. His eyes were closed, and I could see him breathing. I felt my face being washed up with my tears. I slowly opened the door and one of the nurses looked at me.

"Who are you? Are you Savannah Johns?" she asked me calmly.

I nodded. "Is everything okay?"

"Let me get the doctor, hold on a minute." they left me and Eleanor alone with Josh.

I walked up to Josh and sat on the bed.

"Josh?" I whispered. He didn't move. I held his hand and looked at the burns on his arm. He looked terrible, but he was still my brother. My crazy, annoying, weird, funny, athletic, smart, and I'll admit romantic and attractive older brother. Eleanor sat next to me and hugged me.

"What happened to him?" I cried.

"I don't know Savannah, I don't know."

The door creaked and I looked to see the doctor coming in. He sat down in the nearest chair and looked up from the files he was holding.

"What's wrong with him?" I asked him as Liam and Louis walked through the door. They stopped when they saw the doctor opening his mouth to speak.

"I'm afraid he's in a coma."

"A- a what?"

"He's in a coma."

"For how long?"

"We're not sure yet. I'm sorry." the doctor said and excused himself from the room. I stared at the floor. Josh's in a coma. Josh is in a coma. But he's not dead. He's not dead. Liam sat next to me and hugged me.

"It's going to be okay, Savannah."

I didn’t say anything for the next few minutes. I didn't even cry. I just stared at the floor. I didn't even look up for a second. Part of me wanted to cry and isolate myself from the world, but the other part was happy. Happy because Josh didn't die. He's just in a coma. And he'll wake up again. And he'll live a happy life and name his son Bartholomew, like he wanted, just because he thought that name was funny. And he'll name his girl after me, because he lost his bet with me. And he'll have a beautiful wife and a big house. And he'll be successful. And he'll live till he's old and die a peaceful life.

I guess I fell asleep after, because I woke up in the empty bed next to Josh. I lied there for a few minutes and got up. I checked the time, it was 11 in the morning. I looked around the room, half expecting for Louis, Liam and Eleanor to be there. I walked over to Josh's bed. I sat on the chair. I looked over at the little table next to his bed, and saw a crumbled piece of paper. I grabbed it and smoothed it out.

Louis, Liam, and I left to go to the hotel. We left you here, knowing that you would want some time alone. We'll be back at around 12:30.

Eleanor xx

I threw the piece of paper back on the table but missed. It landed next to the floor, and I left it there.

"Hey Josh." I whispered, keeping the tears away from my eyes.

"I hope you can hear me." I scooted the chair a little closer to him.

"I-I, I really want you back. I mean, I have a feeling I'm going to be sent to an orphanage or something like that. Alone. I don't know if DJ is going to come back. I mean, she's just only four. Who knows what could have happened to her. Yesterday I saw Kylee and Mary. They were worried sick about us. And you wouldn't believe who texted me. Sam did. Yeah, I haven't texted him back yet though. He asked if I was alright and stuff like that. I should text him back soon, but I'll do that later."

I paused and redid my ponytail. Before I could continue, I heard the door knock. I turned around, expecting the boys and El to be here. The door opened and a girl around Josh's age walked in. She was really pretty, and she looked really familiar. She closed the door behind her.

"Hey." she walked over to an empty chair and sat down.

I smiled at her. She was probably one of Josh's friends.

"I'm Erin. Erin Hart. One of Josh's friends from school."

"Just a friend?" I smirked.

She blushed and shrugged. "Well, don't tell him, but I might have a small crush on him. But we're really just good friends."

I smiled.

"So how's he doing?" she looked over at Josh.

It took me a few seconds to reply. "He's in a coma."

"I'm sorry Savannah. Here, my mom made this for you and your family." She put a platter on the table in the corner of the room. I looked at her and then looked at the floor. She didn't know about what happened to my family.

"My parents and Alyssa, they didn't make it." I somehow managed to say without crying.

"Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry Savannah."

"But thank you for the food Erin."

We just sat there for a few minutes in silence.

"He used to talk to me about you, a lot. Josh."

I looked at her. "Wait, what? He used to talk about me?"

She nodded and smiled. "No, it was nothing bad Savannah. Trust me."

"What would he say about me?"

"Oh, it was just funny stuff. Trust me, nothing bad or embarrassing. I would've told you anyways." she stayed here for a few more minutes and then had to go. I walked to the table and opened the lid, it was lasagna. One of Josh's favorite. I closed the lid and left the room. I plugged in my headphones and clicked the shuffle button.

White lips pale face, breathing in snow flakes, burnt tongue sour face…

I didn't know where I was heading. I went up the elevator, roamed throughout the halls, and down the elevator. I kept walking and walking. The noise the crutches made echoed through the hallways. I found myself roaming in the main entrance area, and I glanced at the front desk. The lady that didn't want me near my brother was there. I quietly walked away. I found my way to the cafeteria, hoping to get some kind of small snack, but then only realized when I got there that I had no money. I went back to fourth floor and on my way I bumped into the lawyer that was going to work with us.

"Excuse me, but are you Ms. Savannah Johns?"

I nodded.

"I was looking for you. I'm Mr. Hunter, the lawyer."

"Oh, I'm sorry. I was just walking around."

"It's alright. I came here to talk to you, actually."

I gulped, kind of knowing what he was going to tell me. Probably something about being adopted in some way. Moving, finding a new family, and the funerals. As much as I didn't want this to happen, it had to happen. And I had to be the one they were talking to, and I had to make the decisions.

He lead me to Dr. Adam's office, and I sat down on the chair. He opened some folders and pulled out thick packets of papers, supposedly forms.

"How have you been doing?" he started off.

"I'm doing okay. I guess a bit better."
He nodded. "That's good. Do you have any family members that you know?"

I shook my head. "Both pairs of my grandparents passed away. My grandma a few months ago."

"What about any aunts or uncles?"

I shook my head. "Both of my parents were an only child." It really stunk not having any cousins, but the beauty of it was that we would get spoiled by both sides of my grandparents.

He wrote what I told him down. He looked through more files.

"Who are you staying with right now?"

"Well, I bumped into One Direction, and they told me I could stay with them."

He smirked. "One Direction?"

I shrugged. "Yeah, it was a surprise."

"What happens when they head back to the U.K.?"

"I don't know. I didn't talk to them about it yet."

"Do you know when they're going back?"

I shook my head. "I think in a couple of days I'm not sure. But until Josh wakes up I can probably stay at my friends house."

"But you're not going to stay there forever you know that, right?"

I nodded slowly, not wanting to get to the foster care/adoption part.

"But can we not talk about the foster care until after Josh wakes up?" I asked him hopefully.

He leaned back in his chair and thought for a second.

"Okay. We can wait. So you'll stay at your friends house? Did they tell you that you can stay with them?"

I shook my head. "But I doubt it would be a problem, I mean, they are my best friends and my parents are really good friends with their parents so..."

He nodded, but I could sense that he didn't believe me.
