11. Just Us Two

Savannah's POV

I don't know how long I cried for. I just cried, letting it all out. I didn't even think about the person who was with me, telling me everything was going to be okay. I looked up to see who was hugging me. "Sam?" I whispered. "What- what are you doing here?"

He pushed my hair out of my face and shrugged. "I was walking in the hospital and I saw you running out. I thought something was wrong so I followed you."

I got out of his grip and fell to the floor. I hugged my knees to my chest and rested my head on them. Sam sat down next to me. "Is everything okay?" he asked me. I didn't answer him for a few minutes. I stared at the small burnt tree a few feet away from me.

"Why did this happen to me?" I whispered. I looked at Sam. "Why Sam, why?" He shook his head and messed up his hair with his hands. I saw through his eyes that he didn't know what to say or do. I could tell he wanted to help me, but didn't know how.

"I wish I could tell you, Savannah. I really wish I could. But," he paused, " I don't know."

I shrugged. Sam stood up and gave me his hand. I grabbed it and stood up. "Thanks."

He smiled, "No problem."

We walked towards the outskirts of the neighborhood.

"How's Josh doing? I heard he's getting better."

I froze. Sam took a few more steps until he realized I stopped. He looked at me. "Is everything okay?" He walked up to me and grabbed my arms gently. "What happened?" I finally got the urge to talk. "I don't know. He had some kind of attack earlier, and the doctors did some tests on him, and he told me that he's not feeling well, and then the doctors did some more tests on him, and I saw the doctor walking out-"

"Savannah, I can't understand you, slow down," he forced a small smile.

I didn’t realize I was speaking fast. "I think he's gone, Sam. I think he died." It took a few seconds for Sam to process the information. He pulled me into a hug. "I'm sorry. I really am." I heard someone walk up to us, and he tapped Sam's shoulder.
"Excuse me kids, but you need to get out of this area."

"Come on, let's go," Sam grabbed my hand. I nodded and we walked outside of the area. My phone vibrated for the millionth time.

"I think you might want to get that." Sam said. I shrugged and checked the caller ID. "It's Kylee. They're probably wondering where I am."

He motioned for me to answer it. I shook my head. "I'm not in the mood to talk to anyone."

"Here, let me answer it," Sam took my phone and put it on his ear.

"Hello? - Savannah's with me, yeah. She's okay. I promise. - Okay one second."

"They want to talk to you," he handed me the phone. I sighed.

"Hello?"

"Savannah! Where are you?"

"In my neighborhood." I looked around at the burnt place.

"Wait what? How?"

"I don't feel like explaining right now," I look over at Sam, who was checking his phone and probably texting someone.

"Do you want my mom to pick you up?" she asked.

"Umm.."

"Hey. My older brother is coming to pick us up," Sam nudged me.

"You sure?" I asked him.

He nodded. "Yeah."

"Hey Kylee, it's okay. Sam's brother is coming to pick us up. I'll come to the hospital directly."

"Kk see ya."

~

"Thank you and sorry for the bother," I thanked Nathan while he dropped me off at the hospital.

"It's no problem, your welcome," he forced a smile.

"You don’t have to come with me, I'll be alright," I told Sam as he closed the car door and waved to his brother.

He shook his head and smiled. "It's fine."

He opened the glass door for me, and let me in. "Thank you." I smiled. He smiled back and we made our way to the elevator.

"You guys look alike."  I pressed the elevator button.

"Me and Nathan? Nah, we don't."
"Y'all actually do, some features."

"Like what?"

"I don't know, is seems like he's like the older version of you, if you know what I mean."

He shrugged and chuckled, and we walked in the elevator. I hesitated before I pressed the button that would take us to the fourth floor. It only felt like a second where the elevator stopped on the floor. I walked in the waiting room and immediately DJ jumped off of the chair and ran up to me. I kneeled down in front of her and hugged her tight. "Are you okay?" her innocent little voice rang in my ear. "I'll be okay." I replied to her, and I meant it. Sooner or later, I guess I'll be okay.

"Did the doctor tell you?" I pulled away from the hug and looked at her. She shook her head. "I saw him talk to Eleanor, and she didn't look happy with the news. She went to the restroom and she looked like she was crying. She came back and acted normal. She didn’t talk to me, Kylee, or Mary though."

I brushed her hair out of her face and tried not to cry. "What did he tell her?" she asked me. I wiped my eyes and looked at the ground. I looked back at her.
"I don't think Josh made it DJ."

"You mean he died? Is that why you ran away?"

I nodded slightly. "Yeah. It's just us two now."

She immediately collapsed in my arms crying. I held her small body and rubbed her back. I've always hated seeing her cry. "Don't cry DJ, don't cry." by then I was crying too. She looked up and wiped her eyes.

"So Josh is with Mommy and Daddy and Alyssa?" I nodded and she continued, "and with the angels and in heaven?" I smiled. "Yeah, he's with all of them. I bet he's looking at us now, so don't cry, okay? He wants us to be happy. All of them."

She forced herself a smile. "Okay. I'll won't cry. But you can't cry too."

I smiled at her and nodded. "I'll stop crying. "

"So Mommy can see me now? She an see me talking to you? She knows that we met One Direction?" she whispered the last part. She widened her little eyes. I laughed. "Yeah, she knows that."

"When are we going to see Ben? I miss him." To the three of us, Ben was like an older brother. He would come over all the time, even if Alyssa wasn't here.

"I called him earlier and I think he's going to come."

She smiled. "Yay!"

~

I put on my black dress again, for another time. It's been four days since Josh died, and today was his burial. I walked out of the bathroom and sat on the couch next to El and DJ, who were watching Good Luck Charlie.

"Ready?" El asked me. I nodded. She grabbed her purse, DJ turned off the TV, and we set out to the church for the second time. There wasn't that many people who showed up at mass yesterday, but I didn't care. if it was up to me, DJ, Mary, Kylee, EL, and I would be the only ones here. We arrived at the cemetery, and I hesitated before I got out of the car. This was the first time DJ has ever been here.

"Is this where Mommy is?" I closed the car door behind me and nodded. "Yeah," I grabbed her hand and lead her to the place. I sat down in front of the three headstones and pulled her in my lap.

"There's Daddy," I pointed, "there's Mommy's," and then there is Alyssa."

"Where is Josh going to go?" she turned to face me.

"Right next to Alyssa. Right there." I pointed to the empty area on the other side of Alyssa's.

"Then when you die, you'll go next to Josh? And then I'll go next to you?"

I shrugged. "I don't know."

The ceremony didn't take a long time, and just like at my parents and Alyssa's ceremony, people left quietly one by one. I turned around to see how many people were left. Not that many. There were maybe only fifteen people left. Many of Josh's friends came, as Josh was quite popular in school. I saw Ben and Eleanor talking about something, probably about DJ and I. I turned to look at the now four headstones.

"Bye guys. I love you and miss you." I whispered. I looked at them one more time before getting up and walking up to Eleanor.

"I'm ready to leave."

"You sure?"

I nodded. "Yeah, I'm good."

I felt a tap on my shoulder.
"Hey Kylee."

"Mary told me to tell you bye, she had to go."

I nodded.
"So when are you coming back to school? We all miss you."
School. Totally forgot about that.

I shrugged. "I don't know. I'll see next week or so. I think I'm pretty much caught up on everything… hopefully."

"Yeah I think you pretty much are."

"But I don't wanna go back,"

Kylee laughed. "Of course ya do. Mr. Hartman asks where you are every day."

I smiled. "Oh Mr. Hartman."

"Well, I gotta go, my mom's texting me."

I hugged her. "Bye! I'll text you about school later."

She smiled and walked off. I turned my attention to Ben and Eleanor.

"You sure they're fine with you? I could always take them in." Ben was saying.

"No, it's okay, I'll call you if I need anything."

"Bye Ben!" DJ kissed Ben on the cheek before he put her on the ground.

"Bye DJ, bye Savannah, see y'all later!"

I hugged him. "Thank you Ben for everything."

"Anytime," he smiled and walked off to his car. "Ready?" Eleanor asked us. I nodded. "Yeah, let's go."

We got in the car, but I stopped El from turning it on. I looked over at Ben's car, which was still in the same spot. He was still here. After a few minutes, the door opened, and he walked out with pink and white roses in his hand, Alyssa's favorite. I could tell he was crying. He walked over to Alyssa's tombstone, and sat on the ground, looking at it. He outlined the tombstone with his finger.
"What is Ben doing?" DJ asked me. "I don't know. I'll be right back." I walked out and stood by a tree. Everyone has left by now. Ben dug a hole not too deep in front of it and grabbed something out of his pocket. It was a small blue leather box. I held my breathe and wiped my eyes. Ben opened it, and I could see it was a ring. I couldn't see the details, but I know it was supposed to be her engagement ring. Ben took the ring out and placed it in the hole and covered it up again. I walked a little closer.

"I wanted it to put on your finger, before they closed the casket. But it was too late Alyssa, too late. The ring came in a day later. I wanted it to come soon, but they said it wasn't going to come another few days, so I put it right above you," he wiped his eyes and paused. "I got myself one, to know that I already dedicated my life to someone. That's you Alyssa. I miss you." he laughed. "You should have seen Savannah's reaction when I told her I was going to propose to you a few months ago. It was priceless." I smiled and took a few steps closer.

I was going to propose to you on the Eiffel Tower, on New Years after we graduate, at midnight, when it lights up. I read it in your diary. That's how you wanted a boy to propose to you. I couldn't wait to do that. I was counting down the days."

By then I was sure I had cried a whole ocean. Alyssa was too lucky to have a boy like Ben in her life. Even after she died, he was loyal to her. I still remember her first day of sophomore year, she came home and locked me in my room. "There's this too cute of a guy in my Chemistry class and everyone is saying he's checking me out!" I laughed thinking of the memory. He'd asked her to homecoming, and they've been together ever since, but with a small breakup in the middle. They were the perfect couple.

I walked up to Ben and sat down next to him. I put my arms around him and let him cry.

"She's the luckiest girl to have you, Ben. She really is."

"You heard me?"

I nodded. "It was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. I want a guy like you in my life someday."

He smiled at me. "You'll find one Savannah, trust me. You will."

~

"Savannah!" El called me. I groaned and looked at the time. 6:15. Monday, woopie. Back to school. I slowly got out of bed and grabbed my uniform. I took a quick shower and walked to the kitchen.

"I don't want to go to school!" DJ was pouting while El got out the milk and cereal.

"You're going to have to," El sat down next to DJ.

I grabbed a bowl and a cup of water. I sat down across from DJ.

"You excited to go to school?" she asked me.

I shrugged. "Nope, but I got to. I probably have like a whole years worth of making up to do."

Eleanor laughed. "You'll do fine. Kylee's mom told me that you're pretty much caught up."

I sighed. "Thank goodness!"

We finished our breakfast and I grabbed my backpack. We headed out the hotel and drove to school. Eleanor dropped me off first. I walked in and smiled at a few of my friends. I opened the principals door, Mr. Solomon.

"Good morning Mr. Solomon."

"Ah, Savannah, good to have you back! How've you been?"

I nodded. "Better, thanks." I sat down in the chair.

"Well," he started, "Kylee's mom told me that you've been doing some work these past few weeks, right?"

I nodded and handed him a folder of most of the stuff. He looked through it.

"That's great. I'll talk to each of your teachers and ask them to make a separate test for you to cover up this past month. Is that okay?"

"It's great, thank you."

"Oh, and here's another set of the text books for you. You don't have to pay for them. They're yours."

"Thank you so much, Mr. Solomon." I put the books in my backpack and walked to my locker. Everyone acted normal, like nothing happened, and I was glad. I didn't ant anyone to act any differently than before. I opened it up and put my lunch in.

"Hey."

I turned around. "Oh, hey Sam!"

"Hey, so how're you doing?"

I smiled. "Much better, thank you."
"That's good."

"SAVANNAHH!" Mary runs over and hugs me. "Oh, hey Sam," she looked at Sam and then eyed me. I kicked her in the shin.

"Are you ready for the English quiz today?" she asks him.

He shrugged and leaned against the locker. "Eh, kinda."

My phone vibrated in my hoodie. I pulled it out.

GOOD LUCK IN SCHOOL SAVANNAH!!! :) we'll Skype you later!!

I smiled and texted him back. Thank you Zayn!!!! But I don't wanna be here.. School suckss. :P

He texted me a selfie of him and Niall. If you get bored, just remember this face.

I laughed. I definitely will! Btw.. Best. Selfie. Ever.

"Who are you texting?" Mary gave me a weird look.

"Zayn."

"Ooh, what did he say?" she got excited.

"Good luck in school and he texted me this picture." I showed her the picture and she laughed. "Can you please send me that. That picture is perfect." I nodded. "K."

"Which one?" Sam asked. I showed him and he shook his  head.

"Girls girls girls."

I glared at him. "Don't you dare say a thing."

He shrugged. "But-"

"At least they're better looking than you." Mary cut him off and I laughed, "She got that right."

"What's so funny?" Kylee and Sam's friend, Daniel walked over.

"Girls these days," Sam sighed while Mary and I kept on laughing. The bell rang and we all headed to class.

"Hey Savannah!" the day finally ended and I walked over to my locker. I turned around. Sam caught up to me.

"Hey Sam!"

"Um.. Well I was going to ask you this later, but um.. I was wondering if you wanted to go to the movies this weekend? Maybe Friday?" he stuttered. I could tell he was nervous.

"Like a date?" my heart started beating quickly. FINALLY!

He nodded. "Yeah, like a date."

I smiled happily and hugged him. "Yeah, I'd love too!"

"Really?"

I nodded. "Really. I got to go, Eleanor's waiting for me. But I'll text you later!'

He smiled. "Bye Savannah!"
