Everything Has a Happy Ending

Savannah was just a normal 14 year old girl living in Houston, Texas. But a shooting in her neighborhood one night can change everything. Her parents and older siblings died in the shooting. Her younger 4 year old sister, DJ, was seen taken away that night. Savannah wanted to do anything she could to get her back. She woke up the next morning with and soon becomes a part of a new family, who helps her find DJ. But Savannah thinks that her life has no meaning anymore.

10. Another Goodbye?

Savannah's POV

The machines started to go crazy. I looked over Josh, and he didn't look one bit good. I ran out of the room and yelled for the nearest doctor. "Doctor! I need a doctor! Please! Now!" Thankfully, I  saw  the doctor I knew, Dr. Adams, and I ran up to him.

"Josh-  he- machines- beeping-…" I interrupted him  with his conversation with another nurse. He looked at me. "What's wrong?"

"Josh! I don't know what's happening he- the machines-.." He looked at me for a few seconds and dropped the clipboard on the counter. He rushed towards Josh's room. On his way he talked to another doctor, and made his way to the room. He opened the door followed by a nurse. I leaned against the counter and sat down on the floor.

Everyone that was in the room walked out, and as soon as DJ saw me, she ran towards me. She sat by me and hugged me. I put my arm around her and hugged her back. I played with her braided hair, both of us not saying a word. I could see Mary, Kylee, and El sitting on chairs not far from us. After a few minutes, I got up.

"Where are you going?" DJ asked me.

"Go sit with them. I'll be right back, okay?" I pointed to the girls. She nodded and walked over to them. I walked to the end of the hallway. I slowly opened Josh's door. The nurses and doctors were doing who knows what to him. I looked over at Dr. Adams, who looked worried. He didn't know I was here. I sat in the chair, waiting for some kind of explanation. Dr. Adams looked at me and walked up to me. I looked up at him, hoping to get some kind of good news. He looked on the floor then looked at me. "We're doing the best we can, Savannah. He had a mini attack, so we put him on life support now."

I looked down at the floor and stared at the tile. "Can I talk to him for a few minutes?"

He nodded and motioned for everyone to get out. "Can you get DJ too?"

"Yeah, I'll get her." he closed the door behind him. I sat on the edge of Josh's bed. His eyes were closed, and his chest was rising every few seconds. The door opened and DJ walked in. I patted the spot next to me, and she sat there. "Is he okay?" she looked up at me. I shrugged. "I don't know DJ. I hope so." Josh shifted in his sleep and opened his eyes. When he saw us, he smiled. "Hey guys." he forced out of his mouth.

"How are you feeling?" I asked him.

He shrugged. "Eh. Not that good."

"Are you going to be okay?" DJ moved closer to him. Josh was quiet for a while before answering. "I hope so." DJ's face dropped. As much as I wanted him to be okay forever, I knew that he wasn't. I couldn't make myself believe he wasn't going to be okay. I didn't want him to be not okay.

"So you're going to die?" DJ interrupted my thoughts. Josh hugged her as she started to cry. "Don't die Josh, don't die." I tried not to cry, but I had to let it all out.

"Come here." Josh put his arm around me. I scooted closer to him. I head was close to his chest, and I could hear his heart beat every few seconds. Keep on going, keep beating. I know you can do this. I thought to myself. The three of us just sat on the bed for the next few minutes not saying a word. We heard the door click and Dr. Adams walked in.

"Girls, I think it's best if you leave the room, we need to run more tests on Josh."

"Can you give me one more minute?" Josh ask him. The doctor nodded and left the room. Josh looked at us worried. He hugged DJ tightly, whispering something in her ear. He kissed her head and she got of the bed. Josh turned to me and hugged me. "Savannah," he whispered in my ear. "I don’t think I'm going to last." "No, Josh, please. What am I supposed to do? Where am I supposed to go? You were supposed to help me make the decisions Josh. I don't want to go to a foster care or something like that. I don't want to be adopted and leave and move to another world. Stay with me. You'll be eighteen in a year or so. Please."

"Savannah, if anything happens, keep DJ with you, okay? No matter what happens, you two stay together. Please, I don’t want to die either. Call Ben if you need anything. He visited me and told me to call him if we needed anything or any help." I nodded. He looked me in the eyes. "I'll be watching you with Mom and Dad and Alyssa." He wiped my tears with his sleeve, and I nodded. "I love you Josh." I hugged him one more time. "You're the best brother in the world, you know?" He laughed. "I know I am. You're one of top three." He kissed my forehead. "I love you, Savannah." "Bye Josh." I whispered and got off the bed. I picked DJ up in my arms and headed to the door. I looked back, praying it won't be the last time I see him. I closed the door behind me and walked towards the waiting room.

"I love you Savannah." DJ wrapped her arms tightly around my neck. I patted her back and smiled. "Love you too, DJ. What did Josh tell you?"

She smiled. "I'm not supposed to tell you. He told me not to tell you."

I shook my head. "Fine. Come on, let's join the girls."

I sat in the chair next to El. "How's he doing?" she asked.

I shrugged. "He doesn't think he'll make it." DJ moved to the chair next to me.

Eleanor hugged me. "It's going to be okay Savannah." I nodded. This was the first time someone has told me it was going to be alright, and I believed it.

"Where's Kylee and Mary?" I looked around noticing they weren't there.

"They went to get us some drinks. They should be back soon." I nodded. DJ lied down on my lap. "Tired?" I asked her. She looked up. "Yeah." She shifted and fell asleep. I grabbed my phone out of my pocket and clicked on my messages. There was one that popped out to me, Ben. Call Ben if you need anything. Josh's voice kept replaying inside my head.

"Can you hold DJ for a minute, I need to call someone."

"Yeah, of course." She took DJ and I walked to an area of the floor that wasn't really occupied. I sat on the floor against the way and called Ben.

"Hey Ben."
"Oh hey Savannah! How're you feeling?"

"I don't know. I mean, Josh had some kind of attack a few hours ago, and I talked to him just a few minutes ago, and he doesn't think he's going to make it. And I don't know what to do."

"Wait what? Really?"

"Yeah. They're running tests on him, but Josh doesn't think he's going to last."

"Oh no. Do you want me to go to the hospital?"

I shrugged. "I don't know. Because like Josh told me to call you if we needed anything so I just wanted to tell you."

The line was quiet for a few minutes. "Let me finish with what I'm doing right now, so that would take me maybe two hours or so, and I'll go see how y'all are doing. Is that fine?"

"How's DJ doing?"

"She's good. She's sleeping right now. But she's good."

"That's good. So see you in a few hours?"

"Yeah, that's great."

"Call me if anything happens. Text me if I don't answer, okay?"

"Okay. Bye, Ben. Thank you."

"Anytime Savannah, anytime."

I hung up. I wonder how he felt going through this time. I mean, he has lost Alyssa. They were each other's everything. They would do almost everything with each other, 90% of the time. He even told me a few months ago that he's planning to propose to her the summer after she graduates college. Trust me, I was having a heart attack then. I got so excited. I knew it wasn't going to be for another few years, but I mean, it's still exciting news! I get up and walk over to Mary and Kylee.

"Hey guys." I sat down next to them.

"How's Josh?"

I shrugged. "He doesn't think he'll make it. I don't know. But they're running some tests on him right now. I hope so."

"Who were you talking to on the phone?" I could tell Mary wanted to cry, but she wanted to stay strong for me.

"Ben. He visited Josh the other day, and he told him that if we needed anything, to call him. And also, he is going through a rough time." I whispered.

"You know we'll always be here for you Savy."

I smiled when I heard Kylee call me that. We made up that nickname long ago when Kylee and Mary were tired of saying 'Savannah' all the time. I've never really liked the name Anna, so I just stuck with 'Savannah.'

"I know y'all will. Y'all are the best friends ever guys. Seriously. I don't know what I'll do without you guys."

"You're going to make me cry Savy stop it." Mary wiped her eyes and hugged me.

"I'm just saying the truth Mary."

"So, let's take this on a brighter note. How're the boys?" Mary looked at me with wide eyes.

"They're good. We talked to them yesterday."

"Has DJ met them?" Kylee looked over at DJ, who was still sleeping.

I laughed. "You should have seen her face. She was like "Hii Louiiis I watched your videos and your too funny!" I imitated my little sister. Eleanor looked over at us. "What are you guys laughing about?" I laughed harder. "I was just imitating DJ when she saw Louis on the screen."

Eleanor smiled and shook her head. "I swear, this girl, she's the most adorable girl in the world." The four of us talked for a bit longer. I got up and made a quick trip to the bathroom. I opened the door of the bathroom and walked out. From the corner of my eye, I saw Josh's room door open up. I froze. The doctor walks out, looking at his clipboard. He looks up and we make eye contact. His facial expression expressed what he was going to tell me. he walked towards me, but I ran away. I ran to the elevator, slamming my finger at the button.

"Hurry up, hurry up!" The elevator door finally opened and I walked in. I shut it immediately and slammed the button that read "lobby." I wiped my tears off my face with my sleeve. After what felt like forever I got to the lobby floor. I ran towards the exit, crying. I pushed against the door and ran out. I ran towards the place I needed to go to.

"Savannah!" I heard someone yell my name. I didn't dare to take a second to look back. I ran and ran. Through roads and highways. Even with the fat boot on, I could still run. I ran for miles. I could hear someone yelling my name over and over again and running after me. I ran all the way to the place where the police have been for the past few weeks. I'm still surprised they haven't left yet. I got to the outskirts of the neighborhood. I paused for a minute. I panted over and over again. I finally got a little more energy. I ran and bumped into someone.

"Sorry, no people can go in there."

"Shut up! That was my house! I need to see it, please I need to." I cried.

"There's nothing there, honey. I’m sorry."

"Shut up and let me go in there! Please! I need to go! Please!"

"Can you call someone to take her out? I think she might have to go to the hospital." the police said to the other. I saw the other man take out his phone.

"I don’t need to go to the hospital! I need to go there!" I pointed to the direction of my house. "I’m fine! Just let me go, okay!"  I punched the police and ran towards my house. I collapsed on the front lawn, that was all covered in ashes. I looked up at the house- or the place where the house was. It wasn't the happy looking house. It looked dead- it was dead. The color was not black, not like before. It wasn't my house.

"Why? Why did this have to happen to ME? Why!?" I heard my phone ringing in my pocket. I took it out, not bothering to see who it was and stood up. I was about to throw my at the house when I felt someone grabbing my arms and stopping me from doing so.
"Don't Savannah, don't! It's okay." he whispered and wrapped his arms around me. He hugged me and rubbed my back, trying to calm me down. "It's going to be okay. Trust me." I cried into his shoulder feeling useless, questions going through my head that I wanted to be answered.
