3. The Crystal Palace...

As I arrived at the Crystal Palace a sea of depressed, confused and fearful faces met my eyes. Something aroused a sense of shock inside me; I was not sure what this something was at the time, but it felt like an emotion stronger than others. It was calling me a joyful song of celebration. Then it was muffled until it disappeared.

I stood near the back and waited for the king…

The clock tower chimed signifying we had waited faithfully for an hour…

It chimed again. People were getting restless; it had been two hours since I got there. How much longer could people wait? I had thought…

Three hours. Babies were crying and people moaning (This was when I first started to doubt the King Nimpho…)

Four hours. No sign. I had wanted to leave but the threat on the letter stopped me…

Five hours. Finally he appeared! People started to smile and cheer, they were happy and relieved. I was not that easily pleased.

We had not seen the King Nimpho in years! His appearance had deteriorated drastically. He had a long white beard, tangled beyond belief, and his face was as wrinkled as a walnut. He was as round as a ball too. He no longer resembled the man who had ruled us fairly and democratically. He was so different I could label him an impostor. Lastly the old King Nimpho would never be seen in public covered in grime and smelling of an odour so strong I could smell it from where I was standing a the back.

As a hush descended on the crowd King Nimpho started to speak “We have heard that Zandu is going to attack!” A ripple of moans, groans and screams passed through the crowd. I swear I heard someone cheer; I got that feeling again of a strong emotion trying to break through! This time it had disturbed me more; why would someone be rejoicing at the terrible news we had just received, moreover why could I feel it? How could I feel it? I still remember the feeling now! It took over my body, you could say it inhabited me, and made me feel like an outcast. I did not understand it, nor did I want to...

The King proceeded to say, “We are a peaceful colony and will not be rushed into war!”

Everybody had cheered…

Apart from me. I did not trust this new King Nimpho; would you trust someone that no longer resembled himself and threatened you with death?

“I will call out four names. You will follow me inside and I will explain why!” the king had declared.

Everyone had been praying, even me! Although they were praying to be picked and I was praying not to. I was quite content with my life and did not wish it to change. Then it started…

“Luna the Elf of the Forest named Fen, you have been chosen! Gange the Wizard of the Magnolian Family, you have also been chosen! Bof the Prince Dwarf of the Chin-agog Tribe, you have been chosen too!” the King had said with as much power as he could muster.

It had been time for the last name. I knew I would not be chosen! There was one of me and thousands of them, the odds made it impossible! Well in my logical mind it had been.

“And, the last name is…” King Nimpho had paused for suspense, “ Rosébeam the Pixie of the… um err… Green Hollow? You have been chosen!”

Time had frozen! I admit it I had panicked, lost my cool; I didn’t know what to do! I had turned to run, however my path was blocked by a mass of compressed bodies. People were moving to let me through to the FRONT! It had been the WRONG way but I could go nowhere else!
