That Brunette And Me

Amelia just moved to Britain from a small town, after having a terrible relationship with a past boyfriend. She meets superstar Liam Payne, but can she get over heartbreak, the wrath of Directioners, and being in fame? Or will she break under the pressure?

52. Magic Sands.

"Good morning, darling."

My eyes fluttered open as Liam whispered in my ear.

"Morning, buttercup."

"So it's buttercup today?" Liam chuckled, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. I nodded, smiling.

Then I remembered a question I had wanted to ask last night, when he was being so distant. I was kind of hesitant to ask, I didn't want to make him upset again, but I had to know.

"I'm going to ask you a question, but promise me you won't get angry." I said, tilting my head up.

"Why would I get mad, babe?" He chuckled, shaking his head.

"Okay. So, um, why were you upset last night, in the car ride back here before dinner?"

"Um.. well..nothing." Liam replied quietly, avoiding any eye contact. I squinted, suspicious.

"I don't believe you." I said, seeing through the obvious lie. Liam, bless his heart, was a terrible liar. He sounded so uncomfortable.

I sighed, knowing he wasn't going to answer me anytime soon. So I settled for the next question I was wondering about. "Fine. Since you didn't answer that one, let me ask another. And you have to answer."

He paused, biting his lip. "Okay, fine. But I have a feeling I'm going to regret this."

I didn't hesitate to answer. "What were you whispering to Niall before dinner last night?"

"Do I absolutely have to answer?"

"You promised!" I pouted, sticking my lower lip out.

"I know, I know. But you have to promise me not to get upset."

"Why would I get mad?" I mocked, smirking. He laughed, shaking his head again.

"I told him about the tweet, Amelia."

I swallowed, lowering my gaze. Oh, Liam. He worried way too much. "You don't have to worry about me, I swear. I can handle this, I've been through much worse than just mental torture."

It was the first time I had straight out talked about Jacob's abusing side. I didn't like addressing it so directly, but it was the only way I could explain how I felt. I knew how Liam got upset about that, as I could feel his body tense beside mine, but it was the best way.

"I can survive being called a few names. What I can't stand is physical abuse. Okay? And so far, the Directioners have only hurt me through the internet."

"Amelia, I know that. They think that they can do anything through the internet without hurting anyone. But I've seen the effects of it, on the boys, on myself. It hurts, but the only way to get through it is with people to help through it. You need support. From all of us. Including the Directioners."

"Not all of the comments are bad. Lot's of them are stuff like 'hash-tag Team Hayne' or etcetera." I protested, sitting up in bed. He sat up as well, leaning back on the bed frame.

"But not all of them are good, Ames. I'm sorry, I just don't want you more hurt than you already are."

"I understand that. And I really appreciate it, even if it doesn't sound like it. I promise you that I will always be grateful for you, buttercup."

"So the beach today?" Liam grinned, hopping out of the bed.

"Yep!" I smiled, following after him. I grabbed my swim suit, a baggy tank top a dream catcher on it, and a pair of shorts. I slipped on my gladiator sandals and walked into the bathroom. Liam was in the kitchen, preparing breakfast and tea. I put my hair into a messy bun and put on a dash of waterproof mascara, then slid on my aviator sunglasses and pulled them up so that they were on top of my head. I was ready to go to the beach.

"Is there any extra towels in this house? I forgot one!" Harry yelled, running through the halls and opening every cabinet on the wall. And let me tell you, there were an insane amount of cabinets in this house. I raced after him, opening a few drawers before finding one stocked with tons of towels.

"Found 'em!" I called, pointing to the towel cabinet. I grabbed a hot pink one, then closed it quickly and walked over to the next cabinet. As he walked over, I handed him the bright pink towel, smirking.

"Thanks, but I'd rather not embarrass myself." He reached for the cabinet I stood before, and opened it. All it was filled with was cleaning supplies.

"Hmm, that's not it, now is it?"

"Where did you get this from?" He gaped, reaching into the cabinet and moving the supplies around.

"I got it from there." I lied, grinning.

He rolled his eyes, pushing me aside and opening the next cabinet, which contained the beach towels and the shower towels.

"There we go!" He said, replacing the pink towel with a blue one.

"A blue towel? Really? You chose that over the pink and purple ones?"

"It's not blue, it's periwinkle! And yes, yes I did."

"You're such a girl." I laughed, hitting him on the arm.

"I am not!"

"Are too!"

"Not! Right, Boo Bear?" Harry said, looking to Louis, who had just walked into the room. He debated a while, before smirking and walking over to my side.

"Actually, I'm on Amelia's side for this one."

"Lou! How dare you!" Harry gasped, his hand raising to his mouth.

We bantered on a bit before everyone was ready to leave. I logged in the directions to Magic Sands Beach, which was actually called La'aloa Bay Beach Park. But everyone preferred the simpler name. Plus it sounded way cooler.

"So does the beach really just disappear?" Perrie asked, her eyes wide. I shrugged.

"I guess so, that's what they said. And they said the waves were gigantic, so be careful." I recited the words of the restaurant workers.

"That's.. frightening." Eleanor added. Today Perrie and Eleanor were sitting behind me and Elle was sitting in the passenger seat while the boys were in the last few seats.

"Are we there yet?" Louis groaned in his immature way. He may act like a child, but everyone loved him for his silly ways.

"Just a few minutes!" I smiled, pointing to the iPhone GPS.

"We still need food." Niall pointed out, pointing to his stomach.

"Maybe we can go to the Kona farmers market after the beach, then Costco." I replied, glancing backwards so that I could switch lanes.

"Are they far away?" Louis piped up from behind.

"I have no idea." I admitted, shrugging. Finally, I could see the sign for La'aloa Bay Beach Park. I pulled into the lot and parked, watching the other groups of people grab boogey boards and towels, wearing nothing but a bathing suit and flip flops. They looked so tan, compared to my pale skin from the British sun, which was absent most of the time. While I had naturally olive toned skin, I was still white. I tanned easily though, and just an hour in the sun would make me brown. One of my nicknames at school was 'native'. I guess it was just another luck trait of mine.

"Sunscreen please!" Elle asked desperately, shading her face from the sun coming through the opened door. I quickly handed her the bottle. Elle had bad skin problems, and even had to go to a dermatologist regularly. They said being in the sun gave her an increased risk of melanoma, or skin cancer. Ever since she was diagnosed with weak skin, I've been super afraid I'd get skin cancer as well. I know that it's silly, but I'm a hypochondriac. That means that I believe that I have any serious medical problem I hear of. Any symptom that may occur, I wonder if 's a disease. Usually for me, it's cancer.

"I don't need no sunscreen!" Harry said proudly, stepping out of the cool car and into the blazing sun. Everyone else, including myself, put a dab of sunscreen in our hands and made sure to get all over.

"Can you get my back?" Liam asked me, handing me the bottle and taking his shirt off. Elle winked at me, and I shook my head, squirting a bit in my hand and rubbing it onto his back.

"While you're at it, can you get my back too?" Louis asked cheekily, shoving the other bottle into my face with a smirk. I rolled my eyes.

"Have Eleanor do it!" I laughed, as Eleanor pranced over and took the bottle from my hands.

"Thank you Ellie!" He smiled, and finally we were ready.

The blue waves hit the shore with a swoosh, as the little kids screamed and ran out of the waves. The waves chased them, and a little girl sat down right in the wake. I laughed as Niall ran excitedly over to the waves, Elle in tow. Zayn shuddered, walking to the beach, avoiding any contact with the ocean.

"Is there sharks?" Perrie asked, glancing worriedly at the crashing waves.

"Yeah, but it's such a slim chance of coming here." I reassured her, staring at the immense amount of people crowding the beach. Now where would we put our towels and things? I scanned the beach, spotting a nice little spot, partly in the sun, partly in the shade of a clump of palm trees. I grinned and ran, carrying the bag of towels and sunscreen with me. Everyone ran after me, throwing the stuff on the ground. I picked up my pink towel and laid it out, so I was purely in the sun. Elle laid hers next to mine, in the shade. Liam's was set on my other side, in the sun as well. Niall laid next to Elle, then Harry, Louis, Eleanor, Perrie, and Zayn all set theirs in front of ours.

"Who's ready to swim!" Louis yelled, picking up Eleanor and running to the waves. Eleanor shrieked, laughing all the way there. Elle shook her head, then looked to Niall.

"If you even try to do that, boy, I will hurt you."

Niall's hands shot up in defense, then he subtly winked at her, and she just smiled.

"Do you want to swim?" Liam asked me, smiling as Harry and Zayn skipped off to the sea.

"Most definitely."

I was never one to lay and tan, I was always the one splashing around in the water. Other girls thought I was weird, but I liked being the one courageous enough to be myself. That's why I had mostly guy friends, other than Elle. But I was closest to Elle. Of course, I had tons of friends, but Elle was my best friend.

I had the people from back home in Minnesota: Carly, an insane red-headed girl with a massive amount of freckles. Eliza, a super short blonde with tons of friends. Hanna, a sweet girl with brown hair who everyone thought was strange, but I didn't care, we were still close. Then of course there were Grant, Nate, Benny, Boyd, and Landon. They always helped me through stuff, and never thought of me more than a friend. At least I'm pretty sure.

Liam and I ran to the waves, and my legs immediately tingled with the salt water, and goose bumps spread rapidly up my arms and legs.

"Ugh, I have goose bumps!" I shouted to Liam, who started laughing his head off. "What?"

"Goose bumps?"

"Well yeah, what else would they be?" I said defensively, rubbing my arms to keep them warmer as we waded farther in.

"They're called goose pimples!" He replied, laughing at my apparent mistake.

"Ew! No they aren't, that just sounds gross!" I laughed back, poking him in the arm.

"You're crazy." He said, leaning in so he was centimeters from my face.

I took a shaky breath, surprised by his close proximity. I recovered quickly. "Me, crazy? Nah, I think it's you."

"Mm, no." He replied, pecking my nose and stepping away.

We bodysurfed the waves a while, enjoying the bathwater temperature water. Once we got in and running around, it felt much nicer. Then there was a huge wave, cascading straight toward us.

"Look at that thing!"

"That's monstrous!"

"Better get out of the way."

Murmurs of voices were voiced around me as I gaped at the monster of a wave, Liam and the others by my side. I turned to the beach, and I could see Elle and Perrie, who didn't swim, staring wide eyed and open mouthed at the wave. I turned back around, suddenly frozen at the thought of being caught in it. It approached closer and closer, and I could see it was going to break right in front of me. I grabbed Liam's arm and pulled him forward.

"What are you doing?" He asked, surprised at my tug.

"It's going to suck us underneath it." I replied quickly, swimming right up to the wave. I got sucked underneath, and I could feel myself turning over and over, and I couldn't figure out which way to swim. I couldn't open my eyes, due to my contacts, so I guessed. Fortunately, I chose correctly. I took a huge breath as I resurfaced, wiping away the salty water from my eyes. I opened my eyes, searching for Liam. I found him, almost all the way back to the shore. He was coughing and sputtering out water, so I waded quickly over to his side.

"You okay?" I asked worriedly, grabbing his hand. He nodded, still coughing a little.

"I got caught under it. You were right." He replied.

"So did I, and I almost had a panic attack under water." I admitted, remembering the scary moment under the churning wave. They could be super dangerous.

"God, Liam, you could've been hurt, you could've hit your head, then gone unconscious-"

"I'm fine, Amelia. Now who's worrying too much?" He smirked, as we walked back up to Elle, Perrie, and Eleanor and Louis, who had just joined the two.

"Mate, you should've seen you flip over and over! You did like, 10 cartwheels!" Louis said, his eyes wide and laughing.

My eyes grew wide as I stared at Liam. He just rolled his eyes and sat down on the towel. "Yeah, right, Lou."

"Ami got stuck a bit under the waves, she didn't come up for like, almost 20 seconds!" Elle said, winking at me. I shook my head.

"No, it wasn't that long."

We lied on the beach a while, until the noisy beach was suddenly filled with even more sound. Except this time it was music. And music as in ice cream car music.

"Slushy's!" I shrieked, grabbing Elle's arm. She grinned, remembering my story about the most delicious frozen treat I had ever gotten. It was in Hawaii, so hopefully I'd have the same luck.

"Buy me one!" Harry whined to Liam, who shook his head. I grabbed my purse, standing.

"I'm buying! Who wants one? And who wants to split with me?" I said, reaching into my wallet and pulling out a 20 dollar bill.

Liam and I were sharing, Zayn and Perrie were sharing, Louis and Eleanor were sharing, Elle had her own, and Niall and Harry were sharing. Perrie, Eleanor, Elle, and Harry followed me to the van, which was decorated in rainbow colored frozen treats in waffle cones.

"Blue Hawaii and mango please," I ordered mine and Liam's, then signaled to the rest of the line to order.

"Lime and Lemon."

"Blue raspberry and strawberry."

"Mango and pineapple."

"Strawberry and Blue Hawaii."

The young guy in the truck handed us the finished cones, and handed Elle's hers with a wink.

"Hey, hottie, what's your name?" He flirted, smiling. Elle breathed in heavily, glancing at me before handing me her cone. She reached up and slapped him in the face.

"I have a boyfriend, fuck-tard."

We all snickered on the way back, as Harry laughed in huge bursts.

"Elle, why did you slap the slushy man?" Louis asked nonchalantly. That just caused us to laugh all the harder.

"He hit on her, so she, quite literally, hit on him." Eleanor said between giggles, then Perrie finished off for her.

"Then she said, 'I have a boyfriend, fuck-tard'"

Everyone laughed, and let me tell you, Niall laughed most definitely the hardest. We finished our day at the beach with the slushy's, before walking into the little forest next to the beach to wash our feet in the public faucet. Then I ran into an older gentleman making palm tree flowers. I watched as he skillfully twisted the frond into a rose. He looked up to me and smiled a toothy grin.

"They're 5 dollars, if you'd like one."

I smiled, shaking my head. "No thank you, but they are really beautiful. Nicely made."

He thanked me, then paused. He handed the frond to me. "Take it, for free."

I smiled. "Thank you very much."

I walked away, running into Liam as I was admiring the flower.

"What's that?"

"I found a guy making them, he gave me it for free! Isn't that sweet?" I smiled, showing him the rose. He smiled, taking it in his hand.

"That's cool looking."

We walked around a while, before hopping in the car, now fully dry and in our clothes. Now we needed food, before everyone started attacking me from the backseat.
