That Brunette And Me

Amelia just moved to Britain from a small town, after having a terrible relationship with a past boyfriend. She meets superstar Liam Payne, but can she get over heartbreak, the wrath of Directioners, and being in fame? Or will she break under the pressure?

86. Cafeteria.

*Elle's POV*

I was sat in the hospital cafeteria, my heel tapping on the tile flooring. I sighed, looking at my phone as I got yet another text from Niall. I really wasn't sure how things were between us. I mean, I was probably overreacting, and he most likely didn't know what was going on. I checked the text, then slid it back onto the table.

From: Horan! To: Elle

Ellie, what's going on right now? Can we talk, please?

I didn't feel like explaining myself to him, because I could barely explain it to myself. I spooned another spoonful of tomato soup into my mouth, swallowing the bland taste quickly. The hot soup scorched my throat, making me cough lightly. I set the spoon down, looking around the cafeteria, when someone plopped right next to me.

"Hello, Elle!"

It was Clare, to my great surprise. I smiled, my spirits lifted. "Hey there, Clare!"

Clare had on a different hat today, one that was shaped like a purple owl. It had button eyes and little wings that flapped down the sides of her small, pale face. Her smile took up almost her entire face as she set down her peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

"I get my test results back today! I finished all my rounds of chemo!" She said happily, taking a bite and chewing it thoughtfully. She then spoke with her mouth full. "It's to see if the cancer is gone or not."

I smiled. "I bet you fought it off, right?"

She nodded, ecstatic. "Oh, I just know I did! My mummy said so as well!" Just then, Clare's mom sat came up from behind us, smiling at me nicely.

"Sorry, I hope she isn't a bother..."

"Oh, definitely not! We're just having a nice conversation. You guys can sit here if you'd like to." I replied, taking another sip of the disgusting soup. I dipped a saltine into the soup as Clare's mother sat across from Clare and I, smiling happily.

"I'm guessing she told you about how we get to find out some results today, eh?" She said, her eyes crinkling as she looked at Clare.

"Yep! I wish you both luck!"

"Is your friend okay? Is that why you're here again?" Clare inquired, looking up at me. I sighed, nodding.

"I'm sorry. I hope she's alright." Clare replied, taking another huge bite of her sandwich. I nodded, smiling sadly. I hoped so too.

We three talked more, gossiping about who-knows-what, staying after all of us finished our food. I looked up from Clare's mom, who was talking about one of Clare's friends who shaved her head just for Clare, to see Niall. He was leaned against the doorframe of the nearly empty cafeteria, staring at me with a look of surprise, awe, and sadness. My eyes left his immediately, looking right back to Clare and her mom.

"Is that Niall Horan?" Clare blurted out, interrupting her mom. I nearly choked on my food when I saw him standing directly behind Clare's mother. He smiled, gesturing to the seat.

"Can I sit?"

Clare, of course, nodded. She was excited when he sat down and gave her a wink. "It is Niall Horan!"

"Are you a fan of One Direction?" He asked, folding his hands neatly on top of the table. I looked down at my shoes, awkwardly chipping of bits of my teal nail polish.

"Oh yes I am!" She said, her tooth gap showing cutely. He smiled, nodding.

"And what's your name?"

"Clare. I already know yours!" She paused, looking at him curiously. I knew exactly what was about to come out of her mouth. "Why are you here?"

"A friend is injured. She'll be okay though." He said, pointedly looking at me. I ignored him, taking my phone out and checking my Twitter. Nothing unusual at all, the regular hate tweets and all.

Clare seemed to realize why he looked at me. "Do you guys know each other?"

I nodded, my smile sad. "We're here for the same friend. The same one as last time."

Niall cocked his head, wondering where we met last time is what I was guessing. Clare nodded, then looked at her mom.

"What time is it?"

"Time to go! Let's go find out if you are cancer free, at last! We'll contact you, Elle, and tell you what happens!" She said, taking Clare's hand and walking her out of the cafeteria. Niall looked stunned, and sad to say the least.

"Cancer?" He said weakly, his eyes flickering to mine. I nodded, smiling the same, sad smile.

We were quiet, me still picking unenthusiastically at my nails. I really needed to repaint those suckers. I didn't look up at him as I stood up.

"I need to go check on Bear." I said, my voice monotonic. He raised his eyebrows.

"Bear? Who's that?" He sounded upset, his voice wavering. "Is it some new guy or something? A nickname?"

I sighed, frustrated. "You seriously don't trust me, do you?" I sniffed, my nose turning runny.

"Then who the bloody hell is it?"

Grinding my teeth, I whipped to face him. "It's Amelia's dog, bastard."

With that, I stomped away, the doors slamming behind me. How come he didn't just trust me? I'd never done anything to deserve that, at all.
