10. Why the change?

I don't know how it happened, but the next thing I know, he had leaned in and kissed me softly.  I kissed him back, but I don't know why.  I felt a shiver run down my spine and butterflies flew around in my stomach.  He pulled away, and I felt myself blush.  I had never kissed anyone before.

"I-" Jake said, his eyes wide.  "I'm sorry. I didn't mean- I shouldn't have-"

"Be quiet." I said, still trying to think about everything.  I looked over at him, and he looked scared, like I was going to hit him.  "Why did you do that?" I finally asked.

"I- I don't know.  I couldn't help myself I guess."

"You couldn't help yourself?  How could you not help yourself?"

"I'm sorry...  I wasn't thinking."

"Yeah. I can tell." I stood up and walked over tot he window, watching it rain outside.  I didn't understand.  I felt bad for being mean to him.  I wasn't mad at him.  I was mad at myself.  I refused to be close to anyone, yet that's exactly what was happening with Jake.  If I was honest with myself, I had liked the kiss.  It left me wanting more.  I glanced back and saw Jake setting quietly, looking down at his hands folded in his lap.

I walked back over and sat down beside him.

"Are you mad at me?" He asked, his voice rough.

"No... I- I'm sorry for being rude."  I hardly ever said sorry to anyone so the words came out scratchy.

"You weren't rude." He said looking up.  "I had no right to do that. I-"

He was cut off by the sound of his phone ringing.  He sighed and picked it up, talking to the person on the other side of the line.  He hung up and looked up at me again.

"My mom's here.  Thanks for letting me hang out here until she came."

"Thanks for walking me home." I said as he stood up.  I stood up and followed him to the front door.

"I'll wash your clothes and bring them to you at school tomorrow."

I nodded.  "All right."

He nodded and pulled on his coat and shoes.  "Well, see you tomorrow."

"Bye."

I stood at the door as he walked to his car.  The rain had let up some, but not very much.  He shut the car door and backed out of the driveway, disappearing down the street.  I shut the door and headed up to my room.  I grabbed a book and started reading.  The phone started ringing so I set the book aside and answered the phone.

"Hello?" I said.

"Haley?  Hi, dear." My aunt said.  "Have you made your decision?"

The truth was I hadn't really thought about it.  I didn't know what to tell her.  "Uh.."

"I'm sorry, what was that?"

"Uh, yeah.   Yeah, i'll do something with you."

"You will?  Oh, that's great!  How about some time this week?"

"Um, yeah.  That would be fine."

"Wonderful!  What day is good for you?"

"It's doesn't matter.  Whatever is good for you."

"How about Friday?"

"That's fine."

"Great!  Then I'll just pick you up from school, and we'll go do something.  Okay?"

Pick me up from school.  I had never been picked up from school.  "Sure." I said.  "Sounds good."

"Fantastic.  See you then!"

She hung up the phone, leaving my speechless.  I hung up and set the phone back on my dresser.  This day was so weird to me.  First, i had a boy walk me home from school.  Second, I had kissed that boy, and now, I was making plans to go do something with someone.  I had never done any of these things before.  I laid back in bed, thinking about whether I actually liked the changes or not.
