13. Shopping for answers

The rest of the week was good compared to what it usually was.  I took Jake's advice and tried to loosen up a bit.  I talked to him without feeling angry or annoyed.  I came to figure out that Jake was actually pleasant to be around.  I could see why the popular kids wanted him to join their group.  Amber sulked whenever she was around Jake, which I found amusing.  Jake didn't though.  He'd snort whenever she was in sight, and he'd get a little grouchy.  I tried to talk to him about it once, but he refused.  You could tell he really didn't like her.

Friday was the day Aunt Clare and I were supposed to do something.  It was nice and sunny outside and I was surprised that I was actually looking forward to doing something with her.  Jake and I walked out of the school building together after school.  He offered to walk me home, but I told him I already had plans.  He looked surprised, but nodded and told me he'd see me Monday.  He walked off and I realized he was walking home.  He had already told his mom not to come pick him up.  I felt bad for making him walk alone, but I couldn't really do anything.

I looked around the parking lot and spotted my aunt leaning against a car.  She saw me looking a her, and she waved at me.  I waved and started walking her way.  I made it over to her car and she gave me a hug and smiled.

"Hi, Haley.  How are you?"

"Fine." I say, smiling back.  "How are you?"

"I'm good.  Go ahead and hop in."

I get into the car and put on my seat belt.  Clare pulls out of the parking lot and starts driving towards the heart of town.

"What do you want to do?" She asks, looking over at me.

"Whatever you want." I say, sounding happier than I had in a long time.

"Well, I was thinking we could go shopping and maybe grab something to eat.  Does that sound okay?"

"Oh.. well, I didn't bring any money."

"Oh, Dear.  You don't need money.  I'll be paying."

"Thanks." I gave her and smile.

Now that I think about it, it was obvious my aunt was well off.  She drove a nice car and wore really nice clothes.  Her hair was perfect, and her nails looked  manicured.  She even carried an expensive looking purse.

We made it to the part of town where all of the shops were located. and we went into a clothes store.  I wasn't much on shopping for anything, much less clothes, but I wasn't about to tell Clare that.  She was doing something nice for me after all.

"So," she said, looking through a clothes rack.  I was letting her pick out stuff for me to try on.  "who was that boy you were with after school?"  She looked at me and gave me a smile.

"That was my friend, Jake."  I said, busying myself with some of the clothes.  I didn't like the sound of this conversation.

"Your friend, huh?  Is that all?"

"Yeah."

"Why is that?" She asked, her voice sweet.

"What do you mean?"

"Well, Dear.  What I mean is you could be more than friends.  You can tell he likes you by the way he looks at you.  Come on now, you can't be that oblivious."

"I'm not."

"Then what's holding you back?"

I quickly grabbed an outfit and held it up.  "What about this?" I asked, not wanting to talk about Jake anymore.  She frowned and looked at the clothes I was holding.

"That's not bad.  Here." She handed me the outfits she had picked out for me to try on.  "Why don't you go try on these things."

I walked over to a dressing room and opened the door.  I went inside and tried on the clothes, happy I didn't have to talk anymore.

After we had finished clothes shopping, my aunt took me down the street to a nice little restaurant I had never been to before.  It wasn't fancy, but it was really nice.  It had a homey feel to it with dark paneled walls and wood floors.  We took a seat in a booth, and a waitress came to take our orders.

"Now, Haley." my aunt said, looking me in the eyes.  "I actually wanted to talk to you about something."

"What's that?" I asked, my stomach aching.  I really didn't want to talk about Jake anymore.

"Well, I was wondering if I could ask you some questions?"

"Yeah, I guess."

"Haley, what really happened to Timothy?"  Clare looked at me with a hardness in her eyes.

My heart sank.  The room started to spin, and I felt like I was going to throw up.  "Is that what this is all about?" I asked, getting angry.

"No, I-"

"Did Mom put you up to this?  Is that why you invited me today?" My voice was starting to rise, and I stood up.   I shook my head at her in disgust and walked out of the homey restaurant.
