A girl named Haley has had trouble her whole life with everything. Her life only seems to be getting worse, and she doesn't know how to turn it around. Will she turn it around? If so, how?

11. Insults and jealousy

The next morning I had to drag  myself out of bed.  I got up and went to take a shower, not thinking about anything other than how good the warm water felt.  I got out and tamed my hair, using products I had all over my bathroom.  I put on a pair of blue skinny jeans and a red shirt, and I went downstairs to eat breakfast.  I fixed myself a bowl of oatmeal, and after I ate it, went back upstairs to brush my teeth.

When I was ready, I put on my shoes and coat and went outside.  It wasn't raining outside, but the clouds were dark and it looked like it would sometime today.  I pulled my hood up and started walking to school.  I was about to step onto the school grounds when I heard someone call my name.  I turned around to see Jake running my way.

"Hey." He said out of breath.

"Hey." I said turning back around.

"How are you?" He asked, trying to keep up with me.

"I'm the same as I always am.  How about you?" I didn't look at him the whole time I was talking, trying to give him the hint to go away.

"I'm fine.  Look, I wanted to apologize for yesterday.  I really don't know what came over me."

I didn't answer for a minute.  "It's fine." I said quietly.

"No, it's not.  I had no right to do that.  Will you forgive me?"

"Yeah, I guess."

"So we're still friends?"

"I don't think you would listen even if I told you no."  We had arrived at my locker, and I started putting in my combination.

"Great.  Then I'll see you at lunch I guess."

I looked up at him and he gave me a sweet smile.  He turned and walked away.  He walked up beside some guy and started talking to him.  They walked off down the hall, leaving me staring after them.

I shook myself out of it and got my books out of my locker.  I headed to my first class, already wanting the day to be over.  Lucky for me, we didn't do much in my classes today and in no time I was already at lunch.  We ate inside again today. I got my tray and walked over to my two seat table.

"Hey there." Jake said setting across from me.  "How's your day been?"

"All right.  Yours?" I shoved my fork into some mac and cheese and took a bite.

"Fine I guess.  This girl is starting to annoy me a little in my math class."  He took a bite of an apple.

"She's just being aggravating.  She's getting on my nerves.  I think she likes me."

I look up at him when he said that, but quickly looked back down before he noticed.  The truth was, I was mad that someone liked Jake.  I was kind of jealous.

"Well," I said, trying to keep my voice even. "do you like her back?"

"Gosh no.  She's not my type.  Amber's way to preppy for me."

"Amber?" I said looking up, not able to hide my shock.  "Amber Corrett?"

"Yeah." He said nonchalantly.

"I thought you were just confused.  Now I know it's that your stupid?"

"Excuse me?" He looked up at me, and I could see pain and confusion in his eyes.

"Amber Corrett is the prettiest and most popular girl in our school  You'd have to be stupid not to want her." I looked back down at my food and stabbed it angrily.

"Well then I guess I am stupid because I don't think she's the prettiest at all." He took another bite of his apple and looked away.

"Why?" I asked quietly, not looking up.

"Why what?" His voice was hard, and I could tell I had hurt him.

"Why don't you like her?"

"I like someone else." He said, keeping his eyes averted form mine.

"Then why don't you talk to her?" I asked, feeling a little jealous.

"I try.  She doesn't like me back."  He paused for a minute.  "You know, Haley," He said, grabbing my attention.  I looked up and saw him staring into my eyes.  "I think you're the one who's a little stupid.
