A girl named Haley has had trouble her whole life with everything. Her life only seems to be getting worse, and she doesn't know how to turn it around. Will she turn it around? If so, how?

12. Get the hint

I stared at him, feeling angry and relieved at the same time.  He stared back at me, an expression on his face I couldn't understand.

"You're ridiculous." I said finally, standing up from the table.

He snorts and shakes his head.  "Of course I am."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Nothing." He said, his voice hard.

"No. What's that supposed to mean?" I demand, setting back down.

"It means that you can't just accept the fact of someone being interested in you.  In any way.  You don't even want a friend.  You blame everything on the person being stupid and insane."

"You don't understand."  I was getting really mad now, and I could feel tears threatening to come out.

"No, Haley.  You don't understand.  Whatever happened before to make you feel this way, I'm sorry.  But that doesn't mean it's going to happen to everyone you talk to.  You're letting this thing ruin your life."

I just looked over at him.  I couldn't say anything because I knew if I did I would start to cry.  I nodded and looked down.  I stood up, swallowing a sob and grabbing my tray.

"Wait.  Haley." Jake said gabbing his tray too.  He followed me to the trash cans and emptied his tray after me.  "Haley, I'm sorry."

"Don't be sorry." I said, my voice rough.  I walked back over to our table and sat back down.  We still had ten minutes in here.

"I am.  I didn't mean to upset you."

"You didn't." I said, refusing to look at him.  I looked down at my folded hands in my lap.

"I can tell I did."

"You didn't upset me.  What upsets me is that I know you're right." My voice broke, and I wiped away a tear before it could run down my cheek.

He didn't say anything.  I could feel him looking at me so I lifted my head and looked into his eyes.  He looked like he was in pain, and I could see him searching for something to say.

"I'm sorry." I said, taking a deep breath.  "I shouldn't be acting like this.  I'll try to... to do better I guess."

"Haley, I didn't mean it like that.  I don't want you to change at all.  I'm just saying that whatever happened isn't your fault.  You don't have to let it haunt you."

I nodded and looked away.  My heart sank when I saw a girl walking our way.

"Hey, Jake." Amber Corrett said walking up.  Her voice was so high pitched and girly it made me want to throw up.

"Hey." He said, his voice sounding exhausted and rough.

"Wanna come eat with us?"  She asked, giving his a flirty smile.  She batted her eye lashes and played with the hem of her dress.

She looked stunned by his sudden answer.  Her face fell, but she quickly recovered with a smile on her face.  "Oh, Jake.  You're funny." She said giggling.  "Really though, don't be humble.  We'd love you have you at the High Table."  That's what the popular table was called.

"I don't want to set with you." He said, looking annoyed.

"But, Jake." She said, her voice on the verge of whining.  "Why would you want to set over here when you could set with me?"

"Because I like her.  I don't care much for you."  He looked straight into her eyes as he said it, and I could see her face turn red.

"Well, fine then!" She said, her voicing sounding squeaky.  She turned and stomped back over to her table.  Jake watched her until she sat back down, then he turned back to me.

"She's so full of herself." He said, rolling his eyes.

"Of course she is.  Everyone at that table is."

"She thinks she can get whatever she wants."

"She can."

"No, she can't.  She just can't take a the hint that I don't want her around."

"Now you know how I used to feel." I said.

"Used to feel?"  He cocked his eyebrow and gave me a smirk.

I looked down at the table.  "Yeah.  I don't feel that way so much anymore."
