55. Why Are Men That Stupid?!

On the next day Professor McGonagall told us about the yule ball after Transfiguration and insisted all of us to stay for the embarrassing dance lessons.
Well, hereby it was confirmed that everyone has to go to the ball.
Since then, as it seemed to me, everyone and especially all the girls only talked about the ball and giggled to death when a boy passed them. I really didn't like the idea of being asked out to a ball. It felt like I was sitting ducks!
And of course, me and boys, well, that was an own whole topic and book and the most dominating words would be shy, redden, blushing, nervousness and being stupid. But yet, I am willing happily to dance with Snape... or Remus.
Wait, what? Remus? What was I talking about??!!
Hermione was the only one who didn't talk about that at all and I was very relieved about that.
"You know, all this ball stuff," I said finally to her as we walked back to our common room. "It makes me feel sick and I won't go to the ball."
"Did someone asked you out?" I looked at her surprised.
"How do you know that?"
"Someone asked me out too!" She looked away and blushed.
"Who? Ron?" I asked excited and ignored that she didn't answer my previous question.
"I won't tell you." She grinned broadly.
"Hermione! I will tell you too!" But she shook her head.
"No. Only if you promise me that you will attend the ball." I crossed my arms grumpily and agreed.
"Fine. I will come to the ball."
Hermione looked satisfied.
"And you have to promise me two more things."
"What? Two more? Honestly, now I think you are lying to me. No one asked you out." She looked hurt but continued.
"Promise me you will help me in getting dressed for the ball." She looked hopefully at me. I nodded.
"And promise me, you won't tell anybody." I nodded a second time. Hermione smiled again.
"Galaxy, you promised me these three things."
"Yeah. I know! Now tell me!"
"Okay but you first." I rolled my eyes. Why was she making such a secret of it?!
"Alright, alright! A Durmstrang boy asked me. He is one year older than me and from Hungry actually. He asked me today, before breakfast when I was going up after my morning sports. He's actually really cute, not only because of his looks and accent, he told me that he watches me every morning doing my sports since they arrived." I smiled shyly.
"Maybe Snape was doing the same?" I dreamt.
"He sounds really nice. You definitely have to introduce us." I nodded.
"Now your turn!" I reminded her.
"Eer. He's -" She stopped suddenly.
"Now what, Hermione?" I asked annoyed.
"You will attend the ball. You will right?" I nodded and furrowed my eye brows.
"Well, then you will meet him in two weeks." She smiled superiorly and walked through the portrait whole into the common room.
I stood there in disbelief.
"Did she just outfoxed me?" I pursed my lips offended.
"That's the brightest girl in her age." I said to me and couldn't do anything else than to smile.

It was studying time and everyone was doing their homework in the Great Hall under Snape's ward.

"This is mad. At this rate we'll be the only ones in our year without dates." Ron said from the opposite of the table and distracted me from my charms essay.
Snape passed by and pushed Ron's head back in his homework. I smiled.

"Well, us and Neville!" Ron said again when Snape walked away.

"But then again he can take himself." Harry said back.

They both were very rude but I didn't say anything because I saw how Neville asked Ginny successfully out for the ball when I gave him his water plants book back. Moreover, it would be more fun to see Rons and Harrys faces on the ball day when they realize that Neville managed to get a date.
But thanks to Hermione, they knew this two weeks earlier.

"It might interest you to know that Neville's already got someone."
Both looked shocked.
Okay, the faces of them were too good to not to be seen that soon! I giggled.

"Now I'm really depressed." Ron said.

Fred passed Ron a note.

"So who do you go with then?" He asked his brother back.

But Fred threw a paper ball at a girl called Angelina instead of answering. He gesticulated couple dancing and mouthed something of a ball.
She nodded shy and Ron looked more shocked.
But then he gathered himself and turned to Hermione.

"Well, Hermione, you're a girl." He said stupidly.

"Very well spotted." Hermione snapped back.

I looked curious at Harry who tugged Ron on his sleeve. I wondered why.

"Come then with us-"
Just then Snape clouted Ron and then Harry on the back of their head.
I suppressed a giggle. Snape stared at me shortly but then walked away.

"It's one thing for a bloke to show up alone. For a girl it's just sad." I didn't believe what he just said. Was he really thinking that Hermione won't get a date?

"I won't be going alone because, believe it or not, someone has asked me." She said with suppressed rage.

Then she ran to Snape, gave him her notebook and came back to grab her remaining stuff from the table.

While she was doing this she said angry: "And I said 'yes'!"

Ron and Harry looked puzzled at her while she stormed off.

"Bloody hell! She's lying, or not?" Ron asked Harry.

"If she says so." Harry said unsure.

"Look, we just got grit our teeth and do it!
Tomorrow when we got to the common room, we both have partners! Agreed?"

"Agreed!" Harry nodded firmly.
They're determination made my anger puff away and the corners of my mouth were twitching tensed, struggling to release a noisy laugh.
This need was fulfilled by Snape and his forceful push on Ron's and Harry's heads back into their books.

"What's so funny, Ms. Charmè?" He asked me but it was very hard to pull myself together.

I laughed and laughed and my belly hurt but I couldn't stop. The twins on my left tried to stop my laughing by slapping on my back like you do when you have a cough fit but it only made me to laugh more.
All people in the great hall were looking at me, some giggled with me and others looked annoyed.
I felt very ashamed but my laugher didn't stop.

"How about giving you for your entire work a 'F'?"

I kept on laughing and he glared at me.

"A week of detention?"

And I continued laughing and he continued glaring.

"Being my human guinea pig in my lessons?"

That made me laugh louder and the people around me started to laugh too.

"Dancing with me on the Yule ball?"

Suddenly my laughter got stuck in my throat and I started coughing.
All the students who laughed with me stopped laughing too.
They started giggling in a dirty manner and threw Snape and me curious stares.
I looked up at Snape with my eyes full of tears of happiness and blushed. He smiled triumphantly.

"In my office. Now." He ordered.

I stood up gathered all my school work and walked towards the dungeon, the laugh of the Slytherins leaving behind.
Right in front of the door of his office I stopped and waited. I didn't had enough courage to enter his office then.
I heard some steps from afar and recognized the style of his walk.

"Snape." I whispered and my whole body but especially my stomach started prickling.

Snape walked past me and banged the door open. He stormed up to his desk with his robes flying behind him and took a seat behind the desk.
I still stood in the doorway, unsure to enter or not. Finally I decided to enter and took a seat on the left bench in the first row.
Snape just scribbled on, he didn't look up at me nor he talked to me.
I looked nervously around, playing with my hands.
Finally I dared to cough but he didn't seem to noticed that.
I did it again more louder but he kept on writing.
I coughed a third time, very loud and unnatural.

"Can't stand a few moments without attention, Ms. Charmé?"
He said while he read his parchment.
My cheeks got hot and I regretted my actions.

"No. I just want to know why I am here." I tried to say confidently.

He looked up.

"Well, there are countless reasons for that."

"So, I can't get out of your mind?" I said daring.
He looked at me a little longer and then stood up and walked up to me.

"I wish for you that someone asked you out for the ball and I hope it's not Neville.
Because I would never want to go with someone like you." He said sarcastic instead answering my provocative question.

I looked away very hurt. I swallowed. Why was he saying this? It was incoherent.

"Really? Well, I, and not only me, considered your behavior back in the Great Hall as a request for the ball." I said sore. He pursed his lips and tensed his jaw.

"One week detention. Additionally two days for stealing those books."

I didn't show any emotions to this because if my wall would start to break down my tears would come out too.

"One week and one day with Filch at 8 o'clock and the remaining day with me at the Yule Ball." I turned to him indignantly.

"Pardon?" But he turned around and walked back to his desk.
I stood up and followed him.

"At, at the Yule Ball?" I asked in a high pitched voice.

"How surprising, you can hear."

"But-but... you can't do that! It's the BALL!!" I said frantically.

"I can do so and I am very aware of the ball." He said as it was irrelevant.

My eyes started to moist because of injustice but I blinked them away, suddenly realizing something.

"Y-you won't go to the ball?"

"Every staff member has to attend the ball." He said unenthusiastically.

"Have you any partner?" I asked further.

He looked up a little attentive.

"That's not of your business." He said in a low voice.
I gulped.

"I'm right." I said more to me than to him.

"That's not of your business." He said more dangerously.

"And that request in the Great Hall was just to make me hurt, right?" I said still struggling with my tears.

He just stared at me, maybe he saw that I was just about to cry.

"Well, then, Professor Snape, I hope that you're satisfied now because you did hurt me."

I made a pause to take a breath.

"This in the Great Hall made me hurt because the others made fun of you. And, although you believe I am the worst person in the world, I believe that you are better than everyone and especially you assume and behave and that you deserve something better and much more respect.
And detention on the Yule Ball, well, it did hurt me because a ball is one of the important events in a girls life and you just destroyed my anticipation and the importance of it to me. Thank you very much, Professor!" I said while my tears finally fall down.

I stormed out but stopped in the door way and turned around.

"Maybe you would understand my feelings if you would feel the same." I gulped.

"Or if you just would get a date for the ball!" Then I walked off.
I ran to the next girls toilet.

"Moaning Myrtle?" I said when I entered her toilet.
"Why are men that stupid?!"
