22. The Sorting Hat

The boats docked at the breathtaking habour. And then we were lead to some stairs which lead up by an old and very stern looking woman. She was very agitated because we were nearly an hour late and she started to grumble about Hagrid and his incompetency and that he never does something right and why Dumbledore picks him and not someone else.

I felt very sorry for Hagrid but I was disable to defend him because I was too shy and that made me furious. I mouthed a 'Sorry' to Hagrid but he just shook his head sadly and stroked for the last time the now awoken Royalty.

Then I rushed with the scary Sophie and Ben in my arms after the stairs rising crowd, Royalty behind us. We nearly finished climbing the very long and dark stairs when someone fell down and I had to help them to quickly stand up. Why? Well, I was the oldest and that's why I felt responsible to help them.

We entered a bright front hall. The woman stopped and went up at a half landing. She turned around and waited until the very last pupils, though we, entered the front hall. Then there was silence. Noone spoke and a strange nervousness was in the air. Then the woman broke the silence.

"I am Minerva McGonagall, your transforming teacher and deputy headmaster of Hogwarts, school of whitchcraft and wizardy. And you may call me Professor McGonagall!

There are some rules in this school which ..." and she continued with the house rules.

I listened half to her speach, I was busy with admiring the hall. It was old, very old and the ceiling was very high. And I love old things, infact, my favorite subject in school was history. I am always stunned how old things and actions in the past influences our present.

Then I turned to see in front of me: There was this mass of students, all in dark robes, listening intensly to and scared by a mid-seventy old woman. Somehow strange but also funny. Because, why are they scared of an old lady? She is to old for hurting you, honestly. I had to smile.

"Fine. I will call out your names and you will follow me quickly into the Great Hall."

She rolled out an antic scroll and a bit excitingly called out: "Carmen Valeria Galaxy Charmé." ... my name!

The pupils looked at eachother to see who the first one was. I looked at Ben and Sophie and smiled at them, telling them that it was me. I pushed me from the very back of the round about 80 students to the front. Tough task. Everybody looked at me curiously and wondered why I was that old.

"Maybe she's from the giants." whispered a little terrified girl. I tried my very best to suppress a laugh! Really? A GIANT?? Me? With my 1,60 meters?! That's one of the best jokes I have ever heard. But very soon this amusing thought vanished because I arrived where Professor McGonagal was standing.

"You will be brought to the Great Hall first and alone. The other pupils will be brought in groups of 15-20. Hogwarts caretaker Mr. Filch will explain the house rules to you all in detail and the consequences of breaking them while I will be escorting Miss Charmé to the Great Hall." Then she turned abruptly and walked upwards the stairs. Me and Royalty followed her, taking one last glimpse of the students and the caretaker. He was very strange and ugly looking, by the way.

"Excuse me Professor McGonagal. But why are you escorting me alone to the hall and not with the other pupils? And I think that it would be very important and useful to listen to the caretaker what he has to say but unfortunately I am missing his advices." I tried to ask her and maybe to structure my thoughts through her answer. She stopped and looked at me with surprise.

"The headmaster odered it." she said only and turned around and continued walking to the Great Hall. I accepted the answer but I was not satisfied yet.

Nevertheless, we passed many different and dark corridors until we arrived infront of a big and massive double winged door. It had a style of a middleaged door to the kings dining hall. We both stood infront of it and waited shortly until the door flew open. My stomach contracted. I felt very sick, suddenly. But nevertheless we entered the Great Hall.

The very first thing that catched my eyes was the ceiling. It looked like the open night sky with sparkling stars. And additionaly there were white candles wafting in the air. I was amazed. I didn't have any words to describe this wonderful sight. I never saw something such beautiful!

I heard a deep mutter and then clapping which faded away. I saw that there were four long tables, each two on my left and on my right side. I tried to search for my friends but I couldn't make them out because I was ashamed that everybody was looking at me. I don't like to be the focus of attention and moreover I don't like people looking at me. I looked at my feet and concentrated at the sound of my 'payals' to distract me and to my support Royalty showed up on my right side of my legs.

I was lead to the stage where a long table with teachers, I guess, was and a little podium where the headmaster stood. And there was a chair where I have to sit down. I climbed the last stairs still looking at my feet.

But when I passed the headmaster I looked up at him. He smiled a supporting, relieved and excited smile and his bright blue eyes were sparkling at me wonderfully!

"Good evening, headmaster, sir." I whispered.

"Good evening, Miss Charmé. I am delighted to see you again and moreover in Hogwarts." he said very loud. I smiled weakly back, too much taken by my nervousness.

"Miss Charmé, please have a seat." Professor McGonogal said. I nodded and sat down, Royalty beside my right feet. I looked to the very left table because there was someone waving. I was surprised that the both Weasly twins were waving impatiently and with wide grins. They cheered me up and let me smile. I was that amazed by them that I was scared when something heavy was dropped on my head; the sorting hat.

"Oh, Miss Charmé. Did I pronounced it correctly?" My heart raced when an old and deep voice came from above my head. It took all my courage to answer him, a short nod. He laughed.

"Scared, are we? Well, then let me see. Oooh! You will do great in school. Outstandingly! You are very precise, eager and you want to do everything perfect, even though it will take longer than the others. And you are very inquiring! Since now you can be a Hufflepuff, a Gryffindor or a Ravenclaw!"

"Thank god, not a Slytherin!" I thought.

"Not a Slytherin? You are very relieved to be not in there, don't you? Why?" I was nervous and I didn't know how to answer to a hat and moreover infront of hundreds of people.

"I-I don't know... I just heard not charming things about them and I personally don't identify my features with only one of them. And moreover, I don't know anybody in Slytherin, Mr. Sorting Hat." A giggle ran through the hall when I said 'Mr. Sorting hat'.

"Oh, and you are very polite, too. I think the politest pupil under Dumbledore as headmaster! But you don't know how much darkness is in you. You will be very successful there but you will be everywhere, indeed! And I -" he stopped.

There was a short silence until the hat said: "You are a dangerous wappon. Dumbledore, I hope you can handle her.-" he stopped again. But then I felt that my head was shaking.

I heard crying and heavy breathing and I asked stunned: "Mr. Sorting Hat? Is everything alright? What happened? Why are you crying? Did I do something wrong? Did I hurt you? If yes, then I am ve-"

"No, please, don't. I must apologise, it is my fault and I will never do this again, My Lady. I am sorry..." The hat sniffled and keept on crying. I was wondering what he meant with all this and why did he called me 'My Lady'? I took him off my head and placed him in my lap.

"Listen to me Mr. Sorting Hat. Listen and look at me!" He stopped crying and looked at me.

"My Lady, I am not worth of looking at you. I was doing the unspeakable-"

"Listen to me! First of all, stop crying." he tried his best to stop it and did pritty well.

"Good. Now tell me what happened. Why- For what are you sorry?" He sniffled before he spoke.

"I am very sorry, My Lady and Dumbledore, because I can't sort you, My Lady, in any house. I am not authorized and incompetent to sort you, My Lady. You are to worthy for our world and I won't dare to try to put you into a house. Please forgive me, My Lady, please..." He begged.

There was a light uproar in the hall and everyone wondered what was happening. I was still confused and looked at the hat.

"You are forgiven." was the only thing I was able to say.

"Thank you, My Lady! You are the kindest, politest, smartest, the most elegant, the most beautiful and bravest regina I have seen. Please help us, My Lady. Dona nobis pacem! Dona nobis pacem! I am sorry... Dumbledore... My Lady..." Then he went quiet.

There was nothing heard in the hall. Everybody was asking himself what happened and what all this was meant to be. Even I was wondering how should I structure my mind. I tried to focus on one point. On the point when the hat said that I am a regina, a queen. But how... and moreover why me?

"Galaxy. I think it will be the best to go to your new friends for now. Go and join them at their table." The headmasters voice brought me back to the present and not only me.

One thing I asked immediatly: "Can I talk to you later, Sir? Please?" He smiled kindly.

"Of course you can! Infact you have to. Professor McGonagal will bring you to my office later. But for now go, your friends are waiting." I looked at my new friends and remembered what the hat said.

"But I belong to no house. Then how can I join them at their house table?" I asked sad.

"Well, that's easy. You can sit, sleep and be at any house table and house common room. And the most interesting thing is ..." he looked back at the staff table "... there can't be any points discounted from you if you behave not correctly because you don't belong to any house." He looked at all teachers but looked at one longer than at the others. I turned my head to see who was this person. It was a 40 years old man in black and long robes with lots of buttons. He had greasy shoulder long hair and he looked flabberghasted. He even raised an eyebrow. I was very curious to get to know this teacher because somehow he seemed attractive and I had the feeling of that there was something more than his outer appearance. How is it said? Yes, still waters run deep.

Dumbledore coughed and signalized that I should leave. I stood up while Professor McGonagal took the sorting hat from my hands. And I went to my new friends, at their Gryffindor house table.
