54. The Hufflepuffs

It was already dark outside and Harry was still celebrated by the enthusiastic pupils around him.
After a while, it got really exhausting and annoying and I was thinking about going to bed but before slipping under my comfortable bed sheets I wanted to congratulate Cedric too.
Therefore I walked out of the Gryffindor common room, no one really noticed that, not even the drunken fat lady, and I walked towards the Hufflepuff common room in the dungeons.
"It's in the same hallway as in the kitchen." I remembered myself.
But where was the kitchen?
I turned in the opposite direction of the Slytherin common room.
"I guess Slytherin and Hufflepuff have to be in different parts of the dungeons because they don't stand each other. Well, who can stand Slytherins at all?" I thought.
I went the surprisingly warm and welcoming passage down. Slowly, I walked to the end of the hallway where some items lay scattered around.
A painting on my left caught my attention and made me to approach it.
There was a fruit bowl painted on it. I reached out to touch and feel the colors and paint but stopped in the middle of the movement.
"An other time, Galaxy. You are really tired and you just want to congratulate Cedric and slip in your bed; you're not for admiring paintings here." I said to me and reluctantly walked on.
I arrived at the end of the passage where casks laid and I wondered why.
"Maybe it's a puzzle? After all, our common room is protected by a fat lady who wants to hear strange words. Maybe they have crazy jumping casks instead?" I thought.
"Fine. How should I get in then?" I tried at first with saying and yelling Cedric's name but nothing happened. Then I tried to roll the casks away but they didn't move one inch. Finally, I tried with knocking on several casks but nothing seemed to work. I sighed frustrated.
"Right then. I will wait until a Hufflepuff comes in or out of the common room." I leant against the wall, crossed my arms over my chest and closed my eyes.
"Someone will come even if it's tomorrow." I sighed.
I listened to the silence around me and felt immediately relaxed and sleepy. I realized that my head was hurting because of all the noise in the Gryffindor common room. I doubted that the Hufflepuffs would be quiter than the Gryffindors.
Suddenly the silence was disturbed by a strange noise. I tried to hear more intensely but I couldn't make it out. I opened my eyes and looked around to see who or what made the noise but there was no one or nothing beside me and the casks. I furrowed my eyebrows.
"Why do I have a bad feeling right now?" I asked alarmed.
"Maybe I should come tomorrow." I looked one last time around and started walking away, but too late. A cold liquid tossed out of the casks with a loud sizzle. It splashed everywhere and made me wet from head to toe. I screamed in shock and tried to understand why I got wet.
After a few seconds I calmed down.
"A liquid tossed out of the casks." I thought.
"But why?"
I smelled my robes and wrinkled my nose up.
"Eeeeew! That's vinegar!!" I noticed appalled.
Then something squeaked and footsteps came closer to me.
A giggle made me turning around.
"That's not funny, Susan!" I said angry to the girl with red, long hair. "Change me in dried clothes and hair! Without smelling of vinegar!"
She nodded while she smiled and took out her wand and conjured me back in that state in which I came down.
"Now, what's the matter?" She said.
"I want to see Cedric." I said offended.
"Come in." She said and suppressed more giggles.
I glared at her and followed her through a cask, up a short passage to their common room. As we approached it, noises became louder and louder and soon I realized that the Hufflepuff badgers were in no way quieter in celebrating than the Gryffindor lions.
As we entered, the cosy and welcoming room was packed with numerous students from every year and right in the middle of the dancing and jumping crowd, was Cedric Diggory... with Cho from Ravenclaw in his arms. My heart sunk.
"Oh, Harry! I told you to ask her out! Now it's too late!" I thought sad.
"Cedric! Cedric!" Susan called. Everyone stopped and turned around to look at her, then at me.
Nervousness rose inside me. I gulped and forced a smile.
"Hey." I said hoarse.
No reaction.
"Hi, Cedric." I said louder but still unsure.
"Hello, Galaxy." He smiled politely.
"Let me have a word with her and you guys just continue doing what you want." He said loudly to the crowd and at a flick of a switch they all obeyed and proceeded jumping and dancing around. He excused himself from Cho and led me to a quieter corner like a gentleman, on his way he grabbed two jars of brownish liquid.
"Here." He offered me. I took it reluctantly and asked: "What's that?"
"Oh. Thanks but..." I didn't finished the sentence and passed the jar back to Cedric.
"It's okay. No one will know you took a sip. Hufflepuffs are very loyal and we won't tell a teacher about that." I shook my head. My mother's voice said in my head that I should not drink alcohol, and I obeyed.
"Who organized that by the way?"
He smirked. "We are very loyal." I rolled my eyes.
"Honestly, this could only be the twins." His grin grew more and he shrugged his shoulders innocently. I smiled.
"I am actually here because I want to congratulate you. You succeeded in your first task." I hugged him and he hugged me back. "Thanks, Galaxy." He said in my ear. Goosebumps erupted all over my neck but I ignored it. We tore apart.
"I think I should go then. It's going to be two o'clock in the morning and I really need to go to bed now. Have fun celebrating and to be celebrated." I said and made my way out of there. He smiled and nodded in return and went back to his friends.
On my way back I had to admit that his parents taught him some good manners.
As I re-entered the Gryffindor common room everything was quiet. A few students doze off on the couch, armchairs and even on the table and the others were already in their bed. Additionally, trash was everywhere, symbolizing the remains of the pompous party earlier. I sneaked up to my bed and smiled at the fact that I still was in my sleeping clothes and therefore I didn't had to change anymore.

The next days.
Ron and Harry were friends again and everyone in the school stopped accusing Harry for cheating.
This were the indications of a perfect and harmonic breakfast ... but as it is too often, disasters come after harmony.
Harry was staring at Cho and when she turned around he spilled all his pumpkin juice on his robes. They obviously laughed at him. I sighed and passed him a napkin.
I decided that Harry should experience himself that Cho was already taken.
Suddenly Hermione spoke enraged.
"Look at this! I can't believe it she's done it again."
She lay a newspaper down on the table and read aloud: "Miss Granger a plain but ambitious girl seems to be developing a taste for famous wizards. Her latest prey sources report is none other than the Bulgarian bon-bon Viktor Krum. No word yet on how Harry Potter's taking this latest emotional blow."
I laughed. "Bulgarian bon-bon?!" I couldn't breath. "That's hilarious!" Hermione glared at me but she couldn't stop me from laughing.
"You think it's funny? How about this?" She read aloud again.
"However, this is good news for all the other girls around the wizarding world who fell in love with the famous Potter. One advice for you all, get a move on because the enchanting and dwarf-sized girl, Galaxy Charmé, is already the first on Harry Potter's list." She placed the paper down and looked at me satisfied. My mouth was wide open in disbelieve and I barely was able to think. I reddened and looked shocked at Harry and he looked alarmed at me.
"Here, there's even a photo of you two hugging, right under our hug." She pushed the paper towards us. Hermione's and Harry's photo-hug was in a shape of a big heart and ours was just under it, a little smaller and on the right, in a shape of a heart as well!
I took the newspaper and crumpled it up to throw it away in anger.
Right then a small boy appeared and stopped in front of Ron. He was delivering a parcel to him.
"Not now Nigel. Later. Go on." Ron said when he didn't leave but in the end he left.
Ron opened his parcel and said: "I told him I'd get him Harry's autograph. Oh look mum's sent me something. Mum sent me a dress??"
He hold it in front of him horrified and everyone laughed around him.
"Well, it does match your eyes." Harry said and we laughed more.
Ron walked up to Ginny.
"Ginny these must be for you."
"I'm not wearing that. It's ghastly." She was right, it really was ghastly!! My stomach hurt so much from laughing and it seemed that there was no end to it. Ron turned back to Hermione. She was laughing too.
"What are you on about?" He asked her.
"They're not for Ginny they're for you! Dress robes."
"Dress robes? For what?" Ron and I asked in union.
"For the yule ball!" Ginny and Hermione said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Right then my laugher died and was replaced by nervous gulps.

Later that day.
"For gods sake, where's Hermione?!" I shouted as I entered the common room.
Everyone looked up to see who caused the noise.
Ron and Harry walked up to me.
"We don't know. She is gone since breakfast." Harry said.
"And she didn't join us for lunch, just now." Ron added. I frowned. Was everything alright with her?
"We were supposed to learn for Runes together but she didn't come." I said worried.
"Guys, don't you think there's something wrong?" I asked them.
Ron rolled his eyes.
"With Hermione? Of course! Why don't you ever noticed that? I mean, who wants to learn Runes? And who is an annoying know-it-all the whole time?" He said and Harry tried hard not to laugh.
"You both are unbelievable! You know that she is the one who saves your asses all the time and she is the reason why you don't fail in any of your stupid un-elaborated plans! You both should be more grateful to have someone like her to call your friend!" I said angry. I heard all the plans and actions of them from the past three years by Hermione. She told me everything, from the sorcerer's stone and the chamber of secrets to Peter Pettigrew.
Both stopped grinning and stood there with sorry expressions.
Right then the painting of the fat lady flew open and a very excited Hermione entered the common room.
"Hermione! Where hav-"
"I need to show you all something! Come on!" She cut me off and dragged Harry behind her, Ron and me followed them skeptically.
She led us downstairs to the dungeons and turned into the hall way where the Hufflepuffs slept.
"Why are we going to the Hufflepuffs?" I tried to get any information from her but she didn't say a word.
Then we stopped, in front of a painting. That painting which made me stop when I came to congratulate Cedric.
"Just watch!" She touched the painting, especially the pear, and it started giggling and quivering. In the end it changed into a door knob and Hermione opened the door.
As the door opened, it revealed a huge kitchen with fire ovens, several wood shelfs, numerous pots, pans and jars scattered all around the room and little, ugly-looking creatures running around, cleaning dishes, cooking beside the fireplace and cutting vegetables and fruits.
"Oh no!" Ron said.
"Hermione, NO!" Harry said.
"What's the matter?" I looked from one to the other.
"She wants to make us to her house-elf liberation front!" Ron said annoyed.
"Ronald! Can't you just do the right thing for only one time?!" Hermione said angry.
"The elves are happy as they life now!"
"They need payment, an occupational accident insurance and better working conditions!" She responded.
"But why if they don't want that all?"
"We need to make them-"
"Harry Potter?" A high voice squeaked.
And the next thing I realized was that Hermione and Ron stopped arguing and Harry hit the ground because ... an elf... was ... hugging him???
"Harry Potter still knows Dobby's name! Oh how fortune Dobby is!" Dobby stopped hugging Harry and turned around to me.
Oh-oh! I hid behind a big pot. He run after me but I circled the pot in the other direction to stay away from him, I didn't want to hit the ground like Harry.
"Oh, My Lady!" He squeaked behind me.
"How fortune I am that Harry Potter and The Lady come to visit me!!" He already breathed heavily like me but he didn't slow down his pace in chasing me and circling around the pot.
Finally I stopped and the little bunch of joy and gratitude hugged me to the ground. He buried his head in my stomach and hold me very hard as if he let go of me I would never ever come back. Maybe this was right.
"Dobby, you can let go of me!" I said and he did. He looked at me with tears in his big blue-greenish eyes. It was strange! How do you console someone who cries but in happiness?
"You don't need to. It's okay. I know how you feel." I said. He squeaked delighted and hugged me again.
"Sorry, My Lady!" I was able to stand up and walk to the others.
Dobby lead us to a seating accommodation in the next room, a fire place with five ovens on the right and tables and chairs on the left.
"But, Dobby, what are you doing here?" Harry asked the ultimate question when we were taking our seats.
"Dobby works here, Harry Potter! Dobby and Winky! Look Winky's over there." He pointed at an equal of his, only in female. She, though, was not happy as Dobby was and she started crying. Hermione stood up to comfort her but it didn't seem to work. And as Dobby told his story about how he asked Dumbledore for work and salary and holidays, Winky's sobs grew louder and louder.
"Oh! Winky is such a shame! Master Crouch needs me. How could he do all the work on his own? He needs Winky and Winky is sitting here."
"No, he doesn't need you! He's doing fine without you and you should be happy to don't serve him anymore. He didn't deserve you!"
"How can you talk about my master like this!" Winky shouted.
"Wait. Crouch? Is it the Crouch who is here from the ministry?" I whispered to Harry while Hermione tried to convince Winky to live a free elf life like Dobby.
"Yeah. He kicked her out because she had my wand at the Quidditch World-cup. I lost it as some of Voldemort's followers tried to make trouble there and everyone ran away in panic. My wand was used to conjure Voldemort's mark but it was not her, obviously. Mere, no one believed her, not even Crouch. That's why he fired her." He whispered back.
"W-what?!" I said. More to the fact that Voldemort tried to cause trouble at the World Cup than to Winky's sack.
"And you are telling me this now?!" I asked in disbelieve. He looked at Ron and he looked at his cup of tea.
"Let's go then." Hermione said after realizing that Winky won't understand and we all appreciated this.
On our way back we got loads of cakes and pastries and Harry and me allowed Dobby to visit us as much as he wanted. And well, Hermione didn't change her mind about fighting for the rights for elves, although she quite understood that the elves didn't want any thing else than work and a place to sleep, beside Dobby of corse!
