4. Aftermath

After school Thursday, I go to check up on Phoenix. Mrs. Ryder an I were standing outside his door.

"It was so sweet of you to come over and visit Phoenix. I'm sure he will be happy you came." She says I smiled and acted dumb to the fact that she winks after that, which wasn't hard since I was physically blond. I pretend to be dumb and everyone gets suckered into it. Who's dumb now? No big deal, it always happens. She opens the door and let me into his room.

"You have..........lots of zits." I say, not really knowing what to say. He laughs.

"Yeah. Obviously." Phoenix says. I sit down next to him.

"Hey, so I was thinking...." I say, then slowly turn around to see Mrs. Ryder standing there watching us.

"Bye, mom." Phoenix says. She leaves the room and closes the door behind her.

"No really, stop eavesdropping." He calls out. I hear an exasperated sigh from behind the door and Phoenix and I start cracking up.

"So, I think it's funny that you get a bunch of welts right after getting stuck by those creepy men, a day after I have the same thing happen." I say.

"You think the scientist did it?" He asks.

"That's what I'm hinting at." I mutter.

"What should we do, then?" He asks.

"I don't know." I say. After several moments of silence, I speak up.

"You're looking better than last night though!" I say. We continue to talk about an hour and then I leave. The next day, I come back to visit him again. His welts had cleared up, so I didn't have to cringe every time I look at him.

"I think things are going to smooth over soon." I say after several minutes of awkward silence.

"You're lying." He says.

"What?" I say. He's never called me on a lie before. "How would you know?"

"I... I don't really know. But you just lied. I don't know how, but I can tell."

"Okay........" I say awkwardly.

Ryder suddenly looks up.

"MOM! QUIT EAVESDROPPING!" He yells. I look at the door. I heard nothing.

"You can't hear her breathing?" He asks me.

"Nope." I say.

"Oh.." Phoenix says. "So, what's new at school?"

"Oh, Derrick and Alecia are going out together so, now nobody is talking about us anymore. They'll come back to it, but its off for now." I reply.

"I wish I could see that for myself." Phoenix says.

"Appearently Mel and Casey are in the same situation at Maple Ridge." I say. Mel is on my basketball team and she is mad about it ALL the time. It doesn't really help her attitude about it that almost everyone except her is supporting their getting together when both her and Casey are against it. I don't have to worry about that talk about Phoenix and I because we're the only ones from Excentyum. Yeah, it sounds weird, get over it.

"Well, I feel better now. Misery loves company after all." Phoenix says. It's true. You all know it too! Okay, maybe not, but same difference. We continued to talk and I got a text next morning 'I get to go to school today! :) or :( Mixed feelings.....'
